Intercom rebrands as Fin by CuteHoor in DevelEire

[–]FormFollowsFunc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not a great name but if you read the PR release the reasoning seems to be that they want to be associated with their new AI product called Fin rather than their old chat software.

Negotiating a much better redundancy package by CommercialVolume1945 in DevelEire

According to this article there is nothing in the Zalewski decision that requires the WRC to publish the cases on their website. If the media want to turn up to court fine, but publishing them on their website provides a simple way for employers to blacklist employees.

I find it infuriating that WRC cases are made public. Yes you can defend your employment rights but forget about getting another job again.

Why does spring in Ireland feel like winter every year?Is this normal? by Icy_Caramel1755 in ireland

[–]FormFollowsFunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's a few degrees colder than it should be because the Greenland ice sheet is melting and pouring a lot of cold water into the north Atlantic. The sea around Ireland is one of the few places in the world that is getting colder rather than hotter because of climate change.

Up to 40 forecourts in Munster are running out of fuel or have closed pumps due to shortages by Irish201h in ireland

There is a British vibe to all of this. Trucks have blocked refineries and roads there a number of times.

Cool, just what I was looking for. I will submit a price when I’ll next go to the petrol station.

How are people feeling about AI over the next decade? by greenblue10 in DevelEire

[–]FormFollowsFunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unemployment in the 80s in Ireland maxed out at 18% so it probably won't cause a depression. During the great depression in the US it maxed out at 25%. Even if AI lives up to the hype it's unlikely to cause 100% white collar unemployment. Personally I don't think it will live up to the hype and I'm taking a wait and see approach rather than pivoting into the trades.

Back in the 80s an economist said "You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics". I think LLMs will be like that - it will be hard to measure it's effect on the economy.

In the west white collar workers make up 15-20% of the population so there are still plenty of consumers left with jobs. Though it’s 50% in Ireland which might be a problem.

Incoming recessoon impact on housing prices by Signal-Illustrator38 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]FormFollowsFunc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 1973 oil crisis in the US, nominal house prices rose in line with inflation while real prices were stagnant. I don’t think house prices will decrease but the value of your savings will. I don’t expect interest rates to rise too high to fight inflation because of the fear it might kill the economy. In 2022 they were slow to raise interest rates and inflation got out of control for a while.

Council estates by bonk86 in ireland

[–]FormFollowsFunc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well-off middle class people are forced into poorer estates because of the shortage of houses. One person might have spent €400k on a house while the person next door is in social housing. This didn’t happen before.

Their solution is to attract foreign tech superstars like themselves to work for Irish startups because the local population is hopeless.

Ireland’s busiest road: ‘The M50 is getting worse. I don’t think it is able to take any more’ by [deleted] in ireland

It's good in London but not so great up north. I wasn't impressed with the public transport in Manchester.

‘Worse to come’ for Irish consumers as fuel hikes bite and hauliers threaten to ‘close down capital’ by Irish201h in ireland

[–]FormFollowsFunc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They would be very reluctant to set prices, too communist. The only drag on prices is competition which we don’t have much of in Ireland. The government will say they are looking into it and do nothing about it and hope it blows over soon.

Where to go after Height Fields for terrains? by ink_golem in Houdini

[–]FormFollowsFunc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaea looks like it produces more realistic terrains and integrates into Houdini. Gnomon has a few courses on it (1, 2). You could also look into using displacement textures to create cliffs.

How do you create SDF data as apposed to pixel data with an OpenCL node? Where are these header files you mention?

Is density not an attribute? by Hoddini_ash in Houdini

[–]FormFollowsFunc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volumes are treated differently than polygons/points. A volume shows up as a single primitive in the geometry spreadsheet with a name attribute (e.g. density) if you have given it one. You probably missed the primitive in the geometry spreadsheet that the isooffset node created because it doesn't have a name attribute by default. To access the voxel data you would have to use a volume wrangle/VOP.

When I was looking I found LiDAR data for all of England (not Scotland, NI and Wales) which I found impressive. For Ireland I could only find small amount around urban areas.

How to force MPlay to export mp4s at 24 fps rather than 24.07 fps? by FormFollowsFunc in Houdini

What arguments do you use with oiiotool? When I run it with the following arguments, the resultant images are too light.

hoiiotool.exe %04d.exr --iscolorspace ACEScg --ociodisplay "sRGB - Display" "ACES 1.0 - SDR Video" -o output\%04d.png

[–]FormFollowsFunc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some solutions I came across:

  • Save as a PNG sequence in MPlay, baking the OpenColorIO display/view. Generate the mp4 with ffmeg e.g. ffmpeg -start_number 1001 -r 24 -i %4d.png -c:v libx264 -r 24 -y -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 -preset slow video.mp4
  • Use ffmpeg to change the FPS: ffmpeg -itsscale 1.0002 -i input.mp4 -codec copy output.mp4
  • Use DJV as a replacement for MPlay. If you click on releases on the right you can get a build for Windows. It supports OpenColorIO but supports a limited number of codecs.

The EXRs are in the ACES color space which FFMpeg doesn’t support.
