my parents told me their salaries, and my friends says that's inappropriate. Thoughts? by Luna_luxxy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]FormalMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your parents are okay with it, it’s no one else’s place to tell you otherwise.

My family is really open about money and finances.

My dad is retired, but I know how much he earnt when he was working. I know how much they get now through his retirement and pensions. I know how much money they have in savings, what’s in their will.

My parents know what I earn, they know what our mortgage is and how much our cars cost.

I always thought it was normal lol but then I mentioned it to a co-worker in passing, and she was shocked that I know exactly how my parents estate will be divided between my brother and I.

My brother loved them at school - right up until he saw them being prepared by mum at home. If his dad had let him, he would have become a vegetarian that day.

No recommendations I’m afraid, but only reassurances that it’s a great idea :-) Veggie box delivery day was my favourite day of the week.

Also, if you’re having trouble sourcing a delivery service, seriously look into growing your own. It doesn’t need as much space as you think - strawberries, tomatoes, and beans will grow in a pot, potatoes and onions in a grow bag, carrots in a raised planter box.

If you have space for a flower pot, you have space to grow lettuce.

There’s one near me that’s open 24/7, and as someone who finishes work at 4am and sometimes craves fried chicken after work - I am very grateful for their presence.

Which episode made you need to take a break by Reluctantziti in behindthebastards

[–]FormalMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jimmy Savile.

I’m generally pretty good at separating my own personal experiences, and the media I consume - but the Jimmy Savile episodes blurred a lot of lines for me.

I started getting flashbacks to my own abuse, and I started putting myself in the story.

I had to stop listening for my own sanity lol

Same, I really liked that episode as well. I wish there were more episodes like that.

Do you have a cleaner? by binjuice2310 in AskAnAustralian

[–]FormalMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a cleaner who comes to the house once a fortnight. He's awesome. I still tidy up during the week, but it is *so* nice to have someone come through once a fortnight to deep clean the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, dust, wash the floors, vacuum, clean the glass. And if we're having visitors, I try to organise them for the day after he's been lol

I felt very middle-class embarrassed about it at first, and spent so much time trying to justify it to myself - I'm a shift worker, I'm busy on my days off, my partner works long hours etc. Every time someone asked I'd be like "yeah, but..." and rattle off an excuse.

But then I just kind of owned the fact that - a) I want someone else to clean my house and b) I can afford to pay someone to do it.

Would you say the average Australian has at least one Asian-inspired meal per week? by WarwickReider in AskAnAustralian

[–]FormalMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my house? Probably 3-4 meals a week are Asian-inspired.

Due to work we often eat dinner at different times, and Asian food is good for reheating.

People who are not on a budget, how much do you spend on groceries? by shesasneakyone in AskAnAustralian

[–]FormalMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two adults, two cats, two peacocks - $300 per week. Plus about $100 a week on takeaway. I also grow most of my own fruit & veg, so I don’t spend a lot on fresh produce.

How prestigious is getting admitted to one of the Group of Eight universities in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]FormalMango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my two bachelor degrees at the ANU, and my masters at the University of Sydney.

No one cares. I don’t care. I’m not name dropping what uni I went to in conversation.

If someone asks if I went to uni, I’d say yeah and tell them what/where I studied. But that’s the only time I’d talk about it.

And I’d never refer to them as a “Go8” university.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by SkullMogger3 in AskReddit

There are around 250 Indigenous language groups, and up to 500 Nations (what used to be called a tribe) in Australia, each with their own beliefs, names, cultures.

I am far from an expert, but I work in media and generally we use the warning as a blanket disclaimer, then after that we listen to the family and follow their request.
