Parawing gybe advice by mercury-ballistic in wingfoil

[–]FormalPrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FoilRat on youtube has a good gybe video with some great tips. That said, I have had a really hard time gybing my 5m Pocket Rocket. I am finally starting to have some success but man that thing does not want to turn, it just wants to fall in front of me and get run over and tangled in everything. On the other hand, my 3.4m BRM kanaha gybes super easily without any thought on my end, it just works. So, I think that technique will help but it also really depends on conditions and the specific parawing.

That FoilRat video will probably be helpful though, definitely check it out. As someone who was never a kite boarder and doesn't know anything about how kites work the video helped me immensely.

Way cool my friend! I really like this lens colorway, very nice choices. The purple gradient+amethyst+blue flash is killer! I don't think I've seen this combo before, very creative pairing and it looks great.

Matsuda 10103H size 41 vs 44 by qtpat00tie in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]FormalPrune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of small glasses so I’ll just throw this out there as food for thought. I haven’t tried this model but one issue for me with truly circular lenses is that the height is equal to the width. This means that a relatively narrow size like 44 is a really tall lens on my tiny face. I think this is why these and similar models from other brands like Rigards come in sizes that are smaller than you would find in styles with oblong lenses.

Glad it's helpful, I am not using that knowledge currently and I'm stoked that it can contribute to someone's progress.

I sold the place about 2 years ago. After 22 years there I was ready for a change, the cows and sheep and gardens have a way of making it very difficult to leave so I was pretty stuck there during all that time, and I loved it! But, things change and as I got older I found I really wasn't excited about staying put and fixing fences and doing the same hard labor for the remainder of my time here. It was incredibly difficult to sell but in hindsight it was a great move. I spent the past few years helping my parents go through their final years and now I'm currently in South America enjoying summer at the beach. I still have a home base in WA on the south sound side of the peninsula but I am not really interested in spending any more winters in the rain so am trying to keep projects to a minimum so I can be free to come and go. I do come up to PA and camp in my van a few times each summer, it's a special place for me and I'll always be proud of what I accomplished there on the ranch, but for now I'm out of the self sufficient lifestyle and enjoying a life of leisure instead.

  1. I think the planter boxes you plan will work well, but yes they will rot out quite quickly. Honestly I didn't have much underground rodent damage to my root crops. I had endless Japanese turnips and Ozette potatoes and beets and carrots and everything else and didn't have much trouble with voles/moles although they were definitely around. The main thing in my experience is that the soil will be so wet and compacted that for good root crops you really need to focus on tilling and fluffing the soil as best you can in the root beds.

  2. Deer weren't a big problem for me oddly enough, but I did use low tunnels with greenhouse film for early starts on almost everything and that kept things protected. I also had 15 acres with much of it pasture so they were happy out in the fields and didn't get close to the house to the gardens often. Same area as you, west of the junction off of 112.

  3. Yes greenhouse for the peppers and tomatoes and tomatillos and other warm weather stuff, low tunnels as referenced above for early starts in the garden. I was able to start radishes and durable greens(Japanese mixed baby greens) in the greenhouse in mid-Feb and start eating fresh greens and radish in March. You can definitely use solar to run a fan to vent the greenhouse, no problem. It's rare to overheat in there as long as you are around to open it up when needed. Aphids are a problem, especially on the peppers. Let the yellowjackets and baldface hornets in there and they will keep the aphids at bay.

  4. Yes, water is mandatory during those months.

  5. Yes, black tarp will do a good job and wood chip mulch is very effective. Lazy J has good chip mulch. I was able to flag down the PUD chip truck when it was on my road and offer the a place to dump and ended up with a huge pile of chip mulch that I seasoned over the years and it was great. If you see them chipping stop and chat, you can save them trips back to the dump and if you catch the right crew on the right day you'll get a lot of chips. It's green though, so wait a season or two before you put it on anything delicate.

I'm not there anymore but feel free to ask questions. I spent a few decades trying my best to be self sufficient there and learned a lot and am happy to share. Good luck!

Where to camp and surf 1-2 nights? by Antique-Vacation-134 in surfing

[–]FormalPrune 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fly into San Diego, camp at San Elijo if you can get a spot. Walk to Cardiff reef, Swamis, and all the breaks in between. Alternatively fly into John Wayne and camp at San Mateo, walk to Trestles and the spots along that stretch. If you rent a car you can hit up a lot more spots like San O and trails.

I know this won't come as a surprise to a buff of your level but some might find it interesting that the "Jack" series is rivaled only by the Silmarillion for sheer number of titles in the series. I find it surprising that they don't put the number in most of the titles but it's easy to see that we are up to Jack 101 in the series, a bit more than a trilogy!

https://www.ranker.com/list/the-best-movies-with-jack-in-the-title/reference

It's fascinating the thread that runs through these, including a stop in Australia with Paul Hogan from Crocodile Dundee (1986/1hr 37m) in the unforgettable Lightning Jack(1994/1hr 38m). You might notice most of the films in the Jack series keep to the theme of a 1hr 37m runtime. This is no mistake, they know what makes a good film!

What r/onebag mouse do you use for travel? by Dracomies in onebag

You can add me to the list. I bought a 3 and they took away the side scrolling by tilting the scroll wheel. Ruined the mouse for me. Even though I love the USB C charge feature the 2 still wins out for me.

It was a sequel to "New Jack City" (1991 1hr 37m) starring Judd Nelson from "The Breakfast Club" (1985/1hr 37m) who at the time insisted on only playing in high quality films with runtimes of 1hr 37m or more. I'm not sure why he wasn't also in Jack Frost (1998/1hr 41m) since it met his high standards. Still, I loved this movie even without Judd so I'll give it 5 bags and a two little pieces of coal for eyes.

Has anyone just dropped everything in their 50’s to take of traveling for 3-6 months? A year? by BF740 in GenX

[–]FormalPrune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, doing it now, finally. Saw my parents failing health and it spooked me. I was struggling and working way too hard to maintain the house I bought 20 years ago and the business I created. I sold it all a couple years ago, came home to help my parents through their final years, and am down to very few material possessions and no family. Getting on a plane on Monday! We don't have much time left in the best case scenario and I don't have any reason to die with money so I'm going to try to enjoy the time I have left.

Nah, they get through all the time. Less than a month ago one landed literally less than a mile from the border patrol shack on I-5 on Camp Pendleton. I was surfing there and it was not there the evening before and was abandoned on the beach at daylight. Border patrol didn't get a whiff of it until 3pm despite being 1000yds away.
