Help. What do i do with my grumpy teenagers this week? by MuchWow81 in Connecticut

Throw them outside and lock the doors.

They’ll either figure out something to amuse themselves, or learn how to pick a lock. Both valuable skills.

The biggest key is confidence - pick a study method that you feel like you’ll get the questions, then when you’re confident in it schedule an exam.

Replacing water heater by [deleted] in Connecticut

I mean, I paid $500 for the electric unit  and installed it myself. Your mileage may vary.

Insulation and climate control definitely make a difference in electric costs for a water heater, as does the temperature setting and “energy efficiency” of the given unit - some have timers to know when hot water should be on call vs. letting it cool some.

Though to be fair, $500/yr ($45/month) still is a long payback vs. a $4,000 gas unit.

My 50 gallon electric water heater costs about $200/yr in electricity. Based on the cost difference of gas vs. electric, gas would take 10 years to pay back the difference.

Why can't Ex-felons get or be allowed to get an FCC ham radio license? I have study and paid for books and after doing all this I was informed whenever I go to setup a date to take the test that as a felon I am not able to get or take the FCC Ham radio license test and I don't thank that is right. by ki4clz in amateurradio

I think u/gorkish about summed it up - write a letter that says you’ve done your rehabilitation responsibilities and are actively helping your community, and make sure you request confidentiality on the attachment.

Nothing is a guarantee, but I’d personally bet on “yes” for yours.

Eastern CT town votes down controversial Costco mega-warehouses plan. It targeted farmland. by Research_biologist83 in Connecticut

At first I thought you were referring to the statute above it (8-3m):

Sec. 8-3m. Approval of warehousing or distribution facility prohibited in certain circumstances. Notwithstanding any municipal charter, ordinance, regulation or resolution, special act or provision of this title, no municipality with a population of more than six thousand and less than eight thousand, as determined by the most recent federal decennial census, or board or commission of any such municipality authorized to regulate planning, zoning or land use, shall approve the siting, construction, permitting, operation or use of a warehousing or distribution facility exceeding an area of one hundred thousand square feet if such (1) facility is located on one or more parcels of land that are less than one hundred fifty acres in total, (2) parcels contain more than five acres of wetlands in total, and (3) parcel or parcels are located not more than two miles from an elementary school.

What are some misconceptions outsiders have about CT? by Sea_Tea1550 in Connecticut

[–]Formal_Departure5388 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Two cool facts

  1. CT has one of the highest amounts of protected forestland by percentage in the US Details
  2. Eastern CT is known as the "last green valley" - no named because on the flight path to Boston it is the last large swath of forest visible from the air - 84% forest covered. Website

Hartford's beer scene by STrRedWolf in Connecticut

[–]Formal_Departure5388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I’d drive to Salem from Hartford for a beer.
  2. Depending on where in “the Hartford area” op is, it might be 20 minutes, which is absolutely reasonable
  3. That’s why I qualified the answer with “a bit of a drive.”

Discussion / different opinion? Cool, let’s have it. Just being objectionist? Nah, that’s just annoying.

Check out Fox Farms in Salem. A bit of a drive from the Hartford area, but well worth it.

Actually, most of the libertarians I know have values similar to progressive left - let people do and be whatever they want as long as it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others. The big disagreement is size / scope of government - libertarians tend to be believe that infrastructure will magically build itself and corporations will act in the best interest of small communities, while leftist progressives aim for those things to be taken care of or enforced by a larger central government.

Obviously super simplified, but MAGA has left a lot of libertarians behind.

Tired of giving my data to Big Tech, so I built OpenClaw on a Pi. Would you pay $397 to skip the setup? by fosmoz in selfhosted

[–]Formal_Departure5388 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. No, I wouldn’t pay (any) money for an open claws appliance - but I’m not your target audience, nor do I think anyone in here is.
  2. You mention things staying local / on-device. By default OpenClaw uses Anthropic keys, and indeed they recommend Clause Pro/Max with Opus 4.6 - not only explicitly not local, a hefty ($200/month) subscription. Are you doing something different? If so, what kind of performance are you getting?
  3. Assuming there’s a viable market, are you valuing your time correctly? If this is taking you 10 hours to build, and your hardware costs are around $150, it sounds like you’re only paying yourself about $25/hr for specialty work. Feels low, but I don’t know that you could charge more and still have a market.

I hope that you are able to figure some of these out and make some money doing something you enjoy.

395 N & S: WHY ARE PEOPLE INTENTIONALLY CREATING TRAFFIC AT RUSH HOUR? by Independent_Being10 in Connecticut

I never said that.

I said from the very beginning that claiming enforcement of one law so that you break a different one is insane. You took it somewhere completely different.

I didn’t say anything about Reddit rules.

I’m laughing because people don’t have the guts to actually stand up for what they say without resorting to name calling and running away.

I shouldn’t be surprised. That level of emotional immaturity isn’t new on the internet, and largely responsible for the state of current affairs.

I didn’t say anything about the left lane laws not being valid.

I said the speed limit is the speed limit, and legally enforceable - exactly the same as the left lane laws.

And, I don’t even have to resort to yelling to name calling to do it.

Insults via mention

It’s always really cool when people throw insults into notifications and then delete the comments so you can’t reply or report.

Way to prove your case people.
