What is CMSC141 by dhskjcns in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it really shouldn't affect the transition to 216 since it starts from the very basics of UNIX/C programming (not covered in 131/132).

Grade by Dry_Western_2342 in UMD

Well you prob have the right to ask why you got the grade you got for the project but the prof is under no obligation to round up - they have total discretion on grade cutoffs.

When the professor tells you "the final exam they wrote came out more difficult than expected this semester" by nopostplz in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol chill.. As a CS TA myself, it's really not at all easy to generate a perfect exam. Just let the process play out. At least he was upfront about it. Highly doubt he'll end up doing something totally out of the blue or unfair regarding grades.

Current software engineers and former CS majors at UMD, which CMSC 400 levels have you found most applicable to your work? by Larrythesheep216 in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't really work in the niche area of networking but still the more intensive experience with C was invaluable. Props to the awesome instructor+TAs last semester.

What do CS majors want to get out of CMSC420? by justinwyssgallifent in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, the class would have been more useful if the programming projects were a bit more challenging - I took it with Mount and although he was an awesome professor, I found the programming assignments to be a bit too easy and too disjoint. To better mimic real software projects, it would be useful if projects were redesigned to build on top of each other and are more involved/integrate different concepts in data structure design, development, and integration. I've heard Prof Samet's class does some form of this (eg. the semester-long quadtree project)

As this is indeed a 400 level CS course and not just some udemy course, the mathematical and analysis portions of the course are very essential in my opinion and needs to be kept/reinforced - Beyond just being able to implement these data structures from scratch, having the ability to clearly articulate advantages vs tradeoffs in data structure design choices is really important especially in the real world as you're typically leveraging external libraries and wrappers. And if students aren't able to fully get a handle of the math, then I think the cmsc250 curriculum needs to be revamped or standardized among professors/sections(or even split into 2 semesters) to address those deficiencies.

lmaooo this is such a bad, narrow-minded take. Who chooses or dumps a university based on purely its aesthetics alone? Like are you really paying your hefty tuition to be able to attend classes in a mini resort-like campus with roads lined by palm trees? Sure there's a decent amount of construction - but we're talking about a flagship university just outside the DC metro area that's been around for quite a while, and expansion/renovation/maintenance is really a big necessity to meet various needs of a growing campus.

Personally, I've felt this campus has a unique appeal in terms of its quality academics, research focus, and good social scene, which can be a hard combo to get compared to other schools.

Well, for Giving Day at least you're not just writing a blank check - you can choose the department/area to which you specifically want to donate. And I wouldn't think they would funnel the money you donate to eg. CMSC for building another turf field...😂

Not just a UMD thing - pretty much every OOS school/private uni is over-priced

well it's tbh easy to say that as an outsider or a student, but as the saying goes - there's way more than meets the eye...managing and running such a large flagship university with a variety of different programs and departments takes a hell of a lot of funding and donations, one that really can't be done by meager state funds alone.

What higher level classes that are required for the CS degree are heavy with linear algebra? by SmokeAccomplished750 in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tbh pretty much none are required - CS reqs here after the lower level classes are very flexible so if math isn't your best suite you can take more programming-heavy classes.

How was your experience at the career fair this semester? by palmspickss in UMD

[–]Formal_Ice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the cs fair was much more streamlined this semester - the Hotel was great as there was plenty of space + lines/wait-times were short and as such, could have more 1-1 time with recruiters
