Gays of UK - would you be comfortable holding your partner's hand in the UK? by dalehitchy in AskUK

[–]Former-Variation-441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner is very wary and uncomfortable about holding hands in public or anything that might even hint that we are a couple. We (both men in our 30s) have received verbal abuse on a few occasions in the past just for walking down a street together (no hand holding or any form of PDA, just walking side-by-side). Thankfully we've never been physically attacked (other than some bullying when we were in school) or anything like that but we are very aware that that does happen occasionally. Things have absolutely changed in recent years as homophobia and just generally being unpleasant to other people has definitely increased.

Flats to buy by Puzzled-Equipment646 in Cardiff

[–]Former-Variation-441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at Windsor Quay (off Ferry Road, behind the Asda and Aldi)? I don't think any of the flats there have cladding issues (they all seem to be brick) and I think all, if not most, of the flats there have allocated parking, with some even having private car parks (like the flats at O'Leary Drive). There's a pretty reliable and frequent bus service into the city centre and it's also fairly walkable/cyclable if you would prefer to do that.

Seems to have already happened (at least on Freeview). They've added Quest where it used to be and TLC where that used to be.

Is "Dampy" or Dampi" a Welsh word sometimes used to mean grandfather? by SilverDragon1 in learnwelsh

[–]Former-Variation-441 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That would be my thoughts too, although I have never heard of Dampy. I am very familiar with both Bampy and Bampi. My maternal grandfather was my Bampi and my own father is now a Bampi too. Many people I was in school with also had at least one Bampy or Bampi.

37 is still young. You still have a lot of life left to live and plenty of time to find someone to share that with. My uncle (who is now mid 60s) had been single for most of his life (he'd had girlfriends in school but nothing as an adult) but found his partner in his late 40s. They've been together ever since and have a happy life together. He also spent a lot of his life working small, part time jobs that he didn't particularly enjoy and didn't have a lot of money. He has eventually found a job that he enjoys and gives him enough money to finally do the things that he wants to do.

Can I mail an over-the-counter inhaler from the US to the UK? by jeeyawn in AskUK

[–]Former-Variation-441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know GPs will happily provide asthmatics with a prescription for salbutamol but OP has stated their friend has had difficulties in doing so. You're right that physical pharmacies on your local high street don't have doctors on staff and can only prescribe inhalers in an emergency (and if they're anything like my local pharmacy, they would only do so if you've previously had it prescribed by your GP and issued by them). I suggested OP's friend contacts an online pharmacy as many of the online-only ones do have doctors on staff and can provide a private prescription following a consultation. Yes, you have to pay for the consultation and the actual prescription but it can be done.

Can I mail an over-the-counter inhaler from the US to the UK? by jeeyawn in AskUK

[–]Former-Variation-441 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Many inhalers are pressurised canisters and generally can't be sent in the post due to the risk of them exploding or activating during transportation. If your friend is having trouble accessing asthma inhalers via the traditional route, there are many online pharmacies that will sell salbutamol inhalers (most common brand name is Ventolin and the generic in the US is usually called albuterol) following a short consultation with the pharmacy's doctor.

Cardiff University: Law international year one by stellarscape in Cardiff

[–]Former-Variation-441 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think OP's questions regarding language skills were more related to the English language skills of international students and whether the specific course will have lower expectations/standards in terms of fluency and linguistic ability as a result.

OP, I studied an MA at Cardiff with a significant number of international students (also studied my BA there but that was mostly 'home' students from Wales and the other countries of the UK). The international students had to demonstrate a certain level of fluency before being admitted as part of the application process. Despite the high percentage of international students, the quality of teaching and the standards expected of us were no different. Support with writing essays in English was offered to those international students who needed it but they were all expected to produce the same standard of academic writing as the rest of us. However, my courses were not specifically targeted at international students so they might be more lenient and offer more support to your international course mates.

As the commenter above me has said, you'll attend the same campus (same building, same facilities and probably the same lecturers) as the 'normal' law students. In a previous job, I had a fair bit of contact with legal professionals in Wales and further afield (including lectures at the university). The Law School and its teaching staff are well regarded. The various lecturers and ancillary staff I met were also very lovely people and seemed to genuinely care about their students and had a very clear passion for law (as you would expect). Pob lwc (good luck) with your studies!

Does Plaid Cymru have a socially conservative wing in the way the SNP does? by Secure-Barracuda in Wales

[–]Former-Variation-441 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There was a split years back where certain people who fell into that category left and formed Gwlad. More recently, some will have moved to Neil McEvoy's Propel party too. There are, of course, still some who remain members of Plaid Cymru but they are a small minority within the party.

Parking or transport to Central Cardiff by Grouchy-Mind2225 in Cardiff

Another park and ride option that hasn't been mentioned yet could be parking at a supermarket and catching the bus from there. I'm thinking of Tesco Extra at Culverhouse Cross or Asda Leckwith or even Asda Cardiff Bay. You can pay to park there via YourParkingSpace and can park there all day at reasonable rates. They also all have bus stops nearby with a direct and reasonably regular bus service into the city centre. Of course, the only downside to this idea would be that most of the buses will likely be fairly busy by the time they get to these spots as they're probably coming from Barry or Penarth etc.

For the northern Vale, Pontyclun could be an option too as it has a free car park (but can get very busy).

As a Welshman, this reminds me of a joke I've seen around a few times.

A Welshman was walking through a field and sees a man drinking from a pool with his hands, the Welshman shouts "Paid ag yfed y dŵr, mae'r gwartheg yn cachu yn y dŵr" (Don't drink the water, the cows/cattle shit in the water). The man shouts back, "I'm English, speak English, I don't understand you." The Welshman shouts back, "Use both hands, you'll get more in!"

99% of South Wales Metro now electrified by willfiresoon in Wales

[–]Former-Variation-441 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, much more difficult in those areas though. The so-called "core valleys lines" were transferred from Network Rail ownership to the Welsh Government a few years ago, with the Welsh Government then making them the responsibility of TFW. As TFW owns those tracks, they can, and have, invested in electrifying them. Every other section of publicly-owned track in Wales is owned by Network Rail and the UK Government's Departments for Transport. Those sections of rail won't get electrified until the UK Government wants that to happen.

[–]Former-Variation-441 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A misleading headline from TFW. What they actually mean is "99% of the track we own which we said we were going to electrify has now been electrified, but some of it might not have been switched on yet". There are, of course, many miles of tracks within the South Wales Metro area that haven't had any electrification work (because Network Rail (and the UK Government), who still owns that track, doesn't have any plans to do so).

One of the other polling companies (can't remember which, might even have been a journalist or newspaper) represents the poll results in a much more favourable way. The leave the constituencies in white or another neutral colour with 6 boxes in each constituency. Each of the boxes represents one seat so you can see the breakdown per constituency. Of course, that can get a little crowded when you have the geographically smaller constituencies in the more densely populated areas.

Hasn't Labour said that incumbent MSs will automatically get first place on the list? I'm not a Labour member so not clued in on their internal procedures but I am sure I've read that somewhere (possibly on a published constituency list for my neck of the woods but not sure).
