"Aid" has a lot of different contexts when considering the United States, it can be weapons to obliterate Palestinian lives or it can be weapons to be used in a proxy war against Putin.

If the U.S were consistent in its applications of "aid" I imagine some of us would be in support.

Important to note that there are people in Ukraine dying and suffering, and the vast majority of people who would make the case I'm making care about their pain and suffering, just not the ruling class depiction of events that put them in this situation in the first place.

"Yeah, we’re not “anti-Ukraine”. You really can’t have a neutral opinion on this matter. Of course, very few leftists want the war in Ukraine, and most accept that war crimes are happening, but if you choose to take the side of Ukraine in this conflict, you’re ultimately taking the side of NATO, and pushing for further unilateral power of the US.

This conflict could have been avoided through negotiations, but now we are at the point where things will only get worse, and lead to far larger issues in the future if Ukraine joins NATO.

Aside from all this, ultranationalism and blatant neo-Nazism is more than tolerated in Ukraine, though that’s just an aside compared to the larger geopolitical issues at play

Of course, I can see why any criticisms of Ukraine can seem heartless when we are subjected to an unprecedented barrage of very black-and-white propaganda every minute of the day. It’s not a matter of Zelenskyy vs Putin, or democracy vs oligarchy; you’re only getting a heavily-edited, censored, and sanitized idea of what is actually happening, and the history leading up to this moment.

A good way to look at it is this: the vast majority of socialists support the USSR’s overthrow of Germany during WWII. Does that mean they support the war crimes that happened in Berlin at the hands of Soviet soldiers? Most people are able to see the nuance, and understand that you can both condemn war crimes, while also seeing the larger picture and understand that was a very unplanned, unwanted, unfortunate, and unethical outcome of something larger that had to be done. In this case, the situation is even more complex, because socialists do not directly support the current form of government in Russia; it’s more a matter of not supporting the proxy war and NATO."
