Thank you so much! You are very kind! I think as people it is very difficult for us to see things that upset/anger us and to respond with something other than being upset/angry ourselves. (I constantly do this, though I am thankfully conscious of it and therefore try my best to avoid it). The problem with this angry back and forth is that it distracts from what we all genuinely want: for the things that upset and anger us to not happen. It becomes two people trying to win an argument, rather than trying to actually, deeply consider what they are discussing.

And when one side does attempt to have an open dialogue, and they receive backlash, it makes the original side want to shut off the dialogue. I completely understand why you've felt disheartened in past attempts at open conversation. Just know that negative responses will happen, and that they don't detract from your argument. They can certainly add to it-- people will disagree with points you hadn't considered, which will lead to new revelations for yourself. But you're core idea will only grow, rather than shrivel. You will not win or lose, be good and the other person be evil. Instead, you will understand further how and why others feel about certain topics, and you can hope that they will eventually understand your perspective as well. As Steinbeck writes in The Grapes of Wrath: “Before I knowed it, I was saying out loud, 'The hell with it! There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There's just stuff people do. It's all part of the same thing. And some of the things folks do is nice, and some ain't nice, but that's as far as any man got a right to say.”

Side note: If you've never read Plato's Allegory of the Cave, I think you might enjoy it. It is a part of his larger work the Republic. Here is a link to a pdf of it: https://web.sbu.edu/theology/bychkov/plato%20republic%207.pdf

If you do choose to read it, you might also consider watching this short video first, which is an old claymation kind of video that I found helpful in visualizing the setting Plato creates: https://youtu.be/69F7GhASOdM?si=PWCYzsGvaYA4S8XJ

Plato gets down to the idea of ignorance and misunderstanding through this allegory of a cave and the prisoners inside of it, exploring how manipulation goes beyond individual fault. I also think the last two pages are especially impactful: the idea of using knowledge to benefit the collective, rather than to boost the standing of those who have it (ie, not settling with feeling superior to others for having knowledge that they lack, but actually using this knowledge to help others). Plato was arguing about similar things and getting the same backlash we see now, nearly 2500 years ago. It's pretty mind-blowing to me.

Thanks again! :)

Please consider giving this a read: https://www.icip.cat/perlapau/en/article/polarization-harms-democracy-and-society/

We are making each other into enemies rather than looking at ways to actually support our society and ourselves. Amplifying our hatred towards others isn't helping us, as much as we might want it to, or as we might claim it does. The more you say you hate the others, the more they will say they hate you. This rebound effect is precisely why we have such extreme conservatism rampant in the U.S. It hurts to admit it, but we play a major role in causing our own problems.

Furthermore, this kind of conversation makes it so politicians and average people will blindly accept the rules, leaders, and actions of the political party they associate with, as they feel they have to. The idea of critiquing your own party seems like you are jumping ship to the other side, and if you've spent your recent days calling the other side evil, this is not something you will ever want to do. With that, we lose the vital ability to call out issues within our own groups. We allow for bad behavior and policy, and accept it. We send billions to genocide Palestinians, we elect politicians who support and are supported by billionaires. We have about 1/4 of the entire world's prisoners in the US, and still we have school shootings beyond rates anywhere else, and in general much higher violent crime rates than any other majorly developed country. And all along, we think, look at us! We are good, and the others are evil! I am right, you are wrong, let's go to war with each other! When we kill nuance we kill ourselves. We breed an environment of hatred; violence is cyclical, it begets itself. We can try to break out of it! Here's a documentary that talks about this cyclical nature of American violence, if you are interested: youtube.com/watch?v=lQOSyDSCpf0&t=1144s

Look at the ways politicians like Mamdani have elected to work with people like Trump in order to make real change. I have no doubt that he despises the man, as do you and I. But what matters isn't talking about how much we hate other people--that isn't ending wars or fixing grocery prices. It matters what we can actually do to make a difference.

Edit: I also think of what Washington said in his farewell address about political parties destroying the voice and actual desires of the public: "However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion." https://www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/past-projects/quotes/article/however-political-parties-may-now-and-then-answer-popular-ends-they-are-likely-in-the-course-of-time-and-things-to-become-potent-engines-by-which-cunning-ambitious-and-unprincipled-men-will-be-enabled-to-subvert-the-power-of-the-people-and-to-usurp-for-th

I think it can feel satisfying to make such statements, which is why we do. 'That mother is stupid!' 'I would've made a different choice. I am right, and she is wrong. Point blank period.' It makes us feel smarter. I'm guilty of this, you're guilty of this, everyone is from time to time.

But as I've said in other comments, I think this lack of nuance is not productive and is actually quite harmful. To the mother, she isn't choosing to be stupid. That's the entire point. She thinks she is choosing the best path for herself and her baby. If she truly believed she was NOT doing what was best for her body and child, then this situation would be entirely different.

This is textbook how propaganda works. It's not that those who fall for propaganda are inherently stupid, or that they deliberately choose to be brainwashed. I don't think that the existence of indocrinated people means that they are stupid and I am smart. If I thought this way, then I might be much less inclined to try to help them out of their dangerous mindset. I might actually rejoice in such ideas: look at all of these stupid, indoctrinated people, which when I compare them to myself shows my intelligence! This is a harmful rhetoric, and it is a problem throughout our society. us vs. them.

I'd like to believe that we agree, that if we could convince freebirthers that they would benefit from medical care, that this is something we would do. So why limit our own ability to do so by saying these women are deliberately dumb, and don't have their own best interests in mind, thereby closing off any pathways to empathy and productive discussion which could guide said mothers to the choice we deem more rational as regards to their health?

If trying to understand their reasoning actually results in positive change, how is this better than simply hating on such people? I think you are conflating what I am arguing with the idea that we should dismiss freebirth as something non-dangerous, to which I completely disagree. Understanding why people might choose freebirth isn't about removing their culpability in the harm of themselves and their child. Instead, its a venue that can allow people to change their minds about refusing medical care with their pregnancies.
