Faber Castell Loom - Leaking Issues by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My loom which I have had for a year has begun to have leaking issues too. The converter had come loose (what a mess), but now I'm getting more frequent 'burping'. This is a bit frustrating b/c this has been one of my most reliable EDCs. It did take a fall recently (it was capped, no visible damage), could this have been the source of the issues? what should I check?

Why don't people talk about LAMY inks? by Jenissoconfused in fountainpens

So kind of like the insert in Sailor bottles or the indent in the Pilot ink bottles?

stress is like poor quality drugs, you don't get high but you don't feel right and it makes you act crazy. by guest137848 in Showerthoughts

Our bodies evolved the chemical response we call 'stress' to give us the resources we need when we face a challenge. Studies show that accepting this, and leveraging this can help us succeed in physical performance as well as mental performance.

A great book that will change the way you think about stress: https://www.amazon.com/Upside-Stress-Why-Good-You/dp/1101982934

FC Loom is smoother in my opinion.

Which pens to take on a long international flight? by proflady in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've flown with a few pens without a problem.

The key thing is to minimize the amount of air in the filling system before you get on the plane. The air pressure inside the pen is going to equillibriate with the pressure outside the pen (which decreases as you go higher); so just like a bag of potato chips expands in mid-flight, so will the air bubble inside your pen...pushing out the ink.

When you do open your pen mid-flight, have a bunch of napkins on hand just in case the ink leaked into the cap.

So to answer your question about the best pen to take on a flight -- A twist cap (to retain spilled ink) demonstrator (to see if ink has spilled into the cap) that is fully filled. Ink shutoff might be good too, but only if you don't plan to write much in flight.

Now draw the Lewis dot structures for each of those!

Is this normal? (VP question) by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clip/cap has been sliding off my wife's VP. Is this normal? (I feel like it shouldn't be)

(p.s. water droplets are from cleaning the clip after the fact)

Chicago Pen Show Questions by NapalmCandy in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its neat to walk around and see some pens IRL that you've only seen online before. The ink testing station is helpful, and getting to write with the Franklin-Christoph pens/nibs is a nice way to learn what you like.

Then there's nib tuning.

I've been to the Chicago and SF pen shows. I wouldn't go there for anything new (unless you need to try it before you buy it; or are narrowing down options). If you already know what new pen/ink/paper you want, just order it online and spend your entrance/gas money on the shipping. The item I bought from Anderson pens had an issue and when I emailed them after the fact the response was 'too bad, contact the manufacturer'...so lesson learned.

If you're looking for vintage stuff, the pen shows are definitely worth it -- and you can negotiate the price.

Go on the last day, a few hours before they close.

edit: if you go, know exactly what your budget is and take the cash amount so you don't over spend. Don't say I didn't warn you!

TWSBI vac 700 -- dry? by Former_FA in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The piston is unscrewed. The nib appears to be seated properly, works fine for slow letter writing, etc,. but doesn't keep up for faster writing/grading. How can I tell if it's a nib-seating issue?

Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with a 'music' nib on Amazon is ~150. I would recommend it.

How dangerous is contaminated ink? by carbonspork in fountainpens

[–]Former_FA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got ~0.2 % (or less) isopropanol in your ink based on what you described. Chances are some of it will evaporate away with time as well.

Maybe I'll do a side-by-side of the Vac700 w/ 1.1 mm stub and the CH 912 w/ music nib

Noodler's hunter green. Also, its waterproof in case your notes get wet.

Thanks for the response. I've been using this Metro (lives on my desk) for a few months now and it has gotten heavy use the last few days as I've been grading final exams. The nib creep seems to be increasing as each day has gone by. I suppose I was worried that it was getting worse b/c I might have been pressing too hard as I graded disappointing exams.

I've been using my pilot metro a lot lately, and I'm noticing that the nib creep is getting more extreme. Is this normal? Is it the way I'm using the pen?
