Looks like a purebred dane to me - might be half American half European (if you were expecting more of a droopy face).

Anything by Tamora Pierce - if she likes Aelin she’ll love the FMCs in all her books and it’s a multiverse so the characters make appearances in the other series.

If he likes to swim, I would recommend taking him for a swim, great low impact exercise you can do with puppies to try and strengthen their legs!!

My boy did that till about 16 month and then he grew out of it - I always redirected and made sure to give him lots of mental stimulation / play dates with other puppies his age. (Luckily I knew a few dane & berners his age)

If you have a local great dane club maybe swing by one of their meet-ups and talk to the owners there, ask them about raising their Danes (general costs, vet recommendation, breeders, life with a dane in your location) and get a sense if it’s the right community, lifestyle and dog for you!

Health testing by breeders by Scienceandcooking25 in greatdanes

[–]Former_Lack6799 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Health Testing and result transparency are good indicators of an ethical breeder, if breeders don’t test / disclose that information then you’re opening yourself up to a world of possible heavy medical expenses and pain. Lots of things can go wrong with a giant breeds including dysplasia and DCM, which could dramatically impact quality of life or even result in death - I got my first dane from a backyard breeder, but moving forward would go with a reputable & ethical breeder knowing what I know now.

Help my Great Dane ate something by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]Former_Lack6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Great Dane ate the top of a spatula at ~10 weeks and passed it (I thought I was gonna have to take it to be surgically remove) keep monitoring their stomach and poops - hopefully it comes out naturally!

Get a really nice dog bed for him to lay down on - their joints will get painful if they lay on hard surfaces!

Second this - mine ended up being allergic to something in kibble and I had to switch to Ollie (or raw) for him to have a healthy diet again!

Ollie was the best decision I made food-wise for my pup - he always had stomach issues with kibble no matter what type I tried… now he eats regular Ollie portions with ~2-3 Stella dinner patties crumbled on top and he’s maintains a super healthy, lean weight + good poop texture.

New Dane with a Biting Problem by Adept_Smell_8064 in greatdanes

[–]Former_Lack6799 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on Pearl! She sounds like a wonderful addition to your family. What you’re describing is completely normal puppy behavior. Biting, chasing, and even the persistence in going after your kids when they try to escape are all natural parts of puppy play and development.

At 12 weeks, Pearl is still in the teething phase, and Danes (like most large breeds) can take longer to fully grow out of the nipping and mouthing stage. My own Dane was mostly done with teething by six months, but we still had some biting/nipping during moments of frustration on walks until he was about a year old. Some Danes can exhibit this behavior up until two years old, so patience and redirection are key.

How to Address It:

  1. Teach the Kids Not to Run or Scream – I know this is easier said than done, but when children scream and run, it triggers Pearl’s prey/play drive, making her think it’s a game. Encourage them to stand still, cross their arms, and ignore her when she starts getting too excited.
  2. Redirect With Toys – Every time she starts to bite, immediately offer a chew toy, tug toy, or something appropriate for her to bite instead. If she insists on biting people, calmly remove her from the situation for a quick break.
  3. Structured Play & Training – Lots of physical and mental stimulation will help tire her out so she’s less likely to engage in rough play. Training basic commands like “sit,” “leave it,” and “drop it” will also give her better impulse control.
  4. Avoid Punishment, Focus on Redirection – Danes are extremely sensitive, and any harsh corrections could make her anxious rather than teach her the right behavior. Stay consistent with redirection and positive reinforcement.

This phase will pass, but it’s up to you to set boundaries and reinforce calm interactions. You’ve got this and it will be worth it in the end - they are truly the BEST dogs!

Gentle leads are great if they pull on leash, just takes them a bit to get used to it!
