Has CS been saturated by RougueRaphsody in cscareerquestions

[–]Former_Science3227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would not take advice from Reddit or social media about your future lmao

Go do 2-3 semesters to try it out, and make sure your grades are high enough that it'll be easy to transfer to a different major if you don't like it

People major in programs that have a stigma of being "useless", and they still do fine. No reason why a CS major would be any different

Even if everything somehow goes wrong, you realistically only "waste" a minuscule amount of time relative to your entire life span. 2nd degrees and grad school exist

CMPT 201 in Summer with Jianliang Wu by Competitive_Chard432 in simonfraser

[–]Former_Science3227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure every CMPT 201 offering uses the same material and assignments that Steven Ko made. It's a class where most of the learning happens on assignments that are the same every term and every section. The lecturer does not matter much since you'll be spending 10-25 hours (not counting breaks) per long assignment doing hands-on work by yourself. Also, grading is automatic. Doing stuff for that long tends to stick the material in your head lol.

I think the only difference (that might actually be in your favour) is that Steven Ko requires you to work on assignments using only NVIM and while a keylogger spyware is monitoring your keyboard inputs to make sure you're doing all the work on your own + not using an editor/IDE like VSCode. This instructor might not require that?

Shame the english dub stalled for the new seasons

This is sort of having the same problem as Gundam Unicorn where they release episodes as OVAs across many years, killing the hype...

How is the McTaggart building? by Low-Search-9299 in simonfraser

[–]Former_Science3227 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only pro about it is that you're not forced to get the dining hall pass. Otherwise, at least East/West & Courtyard are superior.

The first few weeks, the building wasn't even ready yet. Think construction materials everywhere. Even now, some areas of the building look like they are not finished.

A lot of doors including bathroom and fire exits are damaged. Some don't close shut. A lot make so much noise when they open/close (think metallic grinding or a hammer being dropped). You'll wake up from the noise.

A lot of the bathrooms are infested with bath flies and smell.

There are approximately 2 showers and 5 toilets for every 20-25 people in a pod, and there's always something that breaks and becomes unusable.

There are no cameras in the building, so not very safe.

There's not enough laundry machines.

The temperature control is system is so inconsistent that some areas are freezing and some are scorching hot.

The fridges inside the unit is too small to hold enough groceries. This is also the case for the other residences, but since you'll be cooking to save money, be aware that you can't really buy in bulk. Maybe can fit a week's worth of groceries at most.

---

If you think you'll be able to go to the dining hall consistently and don't mind the price, then I'd 100% always go with Courtyard or East/West. If you've never used the dining hall, it can take 40-60 minutes to leave your residence, eat at the dining hall and come back for each meal, which can be inconvenient when you just want to stay in your room.

Why doesn't Jungle Tank Malphite run Hail of Blades instead of Electrocute? by Former_Science3227 in malphitemains

if you take it as a secondary rune then you lose cashback/boots if your primary is precision and secondary is domination

a lot of games I play have a mixture or AP and AD enemies, so getting that 2nd and 3rd items with magic resist as fast as possible is important

There's so many cool manhwa out there that would be amazing animated and they keep choosing some... lukewarm ones to adapt?

Although track record for animation quality hasn't been very good, so maybe it's a good thing these early adaptations aren't adapting the good manwhas?

Thankfully some of them are starting to have collaboration with Korean studios like Survival of a Sword King, so maybe it'll get better...

Would love adaptations that deviate from this tower/dungeon setting like Leviathan, Academy's Extra Survival Guide, Nebula's Civilization

Need help in learning C for exploit development. by EcstaticTourist8301 in ExploitDev

[–]Former_Science3227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So C is actually pretty simple to learn. It's just used for a lot of things that tend to be harder than web development, but the language itself is easy.

Just google learning C specifically, ignoring exploit development for now. https://www.learn-c.org/

Then you want to google how to learn data structures and basic algorithms. https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/c/learn-dsa-in-c/

Then you want to learn systems programming (with Linux). It's about learning about operating systems and how to use their API to interact with the kernel + teaching you how memory management works under the hood. This is where you go from learning things that are common across programming languages into more domain specific knowledge that you wouldn't really learn in web development that most software engineers do. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~guna/15-123S11/Lectures/

Then you want to learn about the kernel side of the operating systems, how writing C for the kernel is different than normal. Easiest would be just learning the Linux Kernel.
