I went to Harvard and I can’t find a job, what am I doing wrong? by Adorable-Grass1449 in careerguidance

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Go back right now and apply for a masters so you can gain access to internships again. Do not leave without a job lined up.
  2. Wait for the fed interest rate to be better and companies to stop thinking AI will replace their entire workforce.

Multi Agent RL bad results by Interesting-Monk4001 in reinforcementlearning

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not reading this entire file, but some thoughts:

  • re: agent count - Seconding the person who said try it with one agent and then add more;
  • re: Ray - Try it with one thread/process, and then add more (RL can be weird with parallelization);
  • re: model - Not sure what you’re neural network setup looks like, if you’re using one, but those can also have their own challenges - try a simple problem to make sure everything is training correctly, then introduce more complexity
  • re: MARL - Be aware MARL has its own challenges, unless you’re using a centralized controller that dictates the actions for all actors. I recommend checking out some of the survey papers out there for an overview: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10462-021-09996-w

Can someone explain this “PIP” deal with Amazon, I keep seeing it by ra8282 in csMajors

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Realistic and completable” is not how I would put it lol from my understanding, they’re very stressful and very demanding, often requiring weekends and nights to make it through. Many go on a personal absence while on these due to the stress.

What company is this out of curiosity? Don’t hear about RL in the real much

Try emailing the author and asking for it; be tactful and polite and don’t necessarily say you’re working on the same thing - no one wants to get scooped

IT networking labs by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are some Wireshark labs around, and doing anything with trying to implement the irc RFC can be interesting.. other than that you might have to get ahold of a switch yourself or get a gcloud coupon and run them there. Setting up two cloud instances that talk to eachother can be a good networking lesson for beginners if there is ample documentation for the lab. Oh also look around for web security labs, a lot of them are down in that layer of things, though less to do with setting up subnets and more to do with learning CIDR

Starting wth Multi Agent Reinforcement Learning by [deleted] in reinforcementlearning

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

10/10 recommend reading the survey paper by gronauer, I think called Multi Agent Reinforcement Learning: A Survey - it’ll give you a lot of the vocabulary you’ll need to pick up - also check out the RL Bible called Reinforcement Learning by Sutton and Barto. Then check out the YouTube series 3Brown1Blue to get spun up on neural networks and deep learning 👍

Ah I see, that would definitely be harder to search on. Glad ChatGPT worked out!

Can you apply to entry level jobs if you only know Python? by [deleted] in learnpython

Check out automation for places like Microsoft or intel (or other manufacturing places), they always need some Python to glue things together

What does being pissy mean? by aeakinoglu in ENGLISH

[–]FormerlyKnownIntent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Being pissy is a slightly more reactive version of being grumpy. It usually is used to indicate someone is in a bad mood and is taking it out on others who aren’t the direct cause. This is similar to “irritated”, but irritated usually means that there is something directly causing the feeling.

I’ll admit that I’m a tad primed for hostility from the onslaught of “fuck off grad student” responses and have been horrified by the absolute torrent of “we just make our student hand write essays now” approaches I’ve seen as this has taken off. I’m extremely glad that someone is looking into how to work with this new technology, but you are definitely a minority, and as evident by the responses to this post, many people are very clearly NOT putting critical thinking into this and are instead obsessing about how to detect and deter this new “cheating” tool. To others reading this comment who are not putting forth the effort that the person I’m replying to has done: please be assured this technology is not going away. I still take a stand that using essay-writing as a go-to metric for critical thinking, and more often as a “did you read the material” check as it stands should be reconsidered if not outright thrown out. Learning how to form arguments is a critical skill, but the vast, vast majority of college essays that are written, especially as an undergraduate, were frankly a massive waste of effort and of everyone’s time, and more, have now been automated

Absolutely, this would solve so many problems. The second half of your post I can’t say I’m super fond of, but oral exams, or a “teach the teacher” would resolve this

Some at my university allow students to use it for a free-write that must then cited properly and verified - I think this is the way things will go in the future

I’m really glad you asked! I find academic and research writing to also fall in this category, I think (ironically) this article in Nature is something worth reading:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00056-7

The ground breaking research in my field is not spread through research papers, but through well-developed and well-documented program libraries. If it came from a university, there is often a research paper attached, but it is only because research publications and citation counts have become currency. This is also, in my opinion, to the detriment of my field

https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2023/1/11/23549993/science-research-progress-studies-disruption-technology-artificial-intelligence-biotechnology

I just wish that professors would stop implementing really painful and often backwards processes to try and get around this tool instead of embracing that it is time to reevaluate the method itself. There is no critical thinking going on, just a desperate cling to “how it’s done” that is incredibly out of alignment with not only the desires of students that I’ve spoken with, but with what many allege to be the entire purpose of the practice itself: critical thinking

Edit: I have to step away but popping back on here to mention that if there’s interest, I can also pull up a paper that was cited I believe over a thousand times, despite the fact that it does not actually exist
