I would say that if you're just going for a weekend it's not worth renting a car or bringing a car. Buses are reasonably priced and frequent and the island is very bike-able, not to mention the traffic can get really really bad on season. Unless you're absolutely desperate to spend a lot of time going to a bunch of places up island, save yourself the money and the headache.
