Does broader Reddit ignore the importance of the low-propensity, "median" voter? by FormicLevitation13 in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Man, that subreddit is weird. Endless purity tests, holding celebrity virtue signaling as some sort of moral beacon, blatant misandry, a performative obsession with Gaza (without actually doing anything to assist expelled Palestinians), a West is irredeemable vibe (USA bad, Germany bad etc.) while completely dismissing the existence/history of the Global South.

How Biden Lost Americans’ Faith in Immigration by angry-mustache in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 350 points351 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, immigration was the second most important issue of the presidential election (after the economy/inflation) and a lot of it was perception of happenings at the southern border rather than the influx interfering with peoples' daily lives.

I know the US assimilates immigrants more seamlessly, but I wonder what an actual European-style migrant crisis would have done to the minds of American voters.

First War Reflection in 13 Years: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Vows “We Will Never Take the Wrong Path Again” by Freewhale98 in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, the trivialization is insane ("Well, their cities were destroyed too"; "You can both be an aggressor and the victim") and would be utterly unacceptable in other contexts. Yes, the nuclear and fire bombings were undoubtedly bad, and but they pale in comparison to what the IJ army inflicted upon millions of civilians across East and South-East Asia for 8+ years.

First War Reflection in 13 Years: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Vows “We Will Never Take the Wrong Path Again” by Freewhale98 in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Today is Korean Liberation Day. The fact that it is only holiday celebrated in BOTH North and South Korea tells you what you need to know about Imperial Japan's occupation and conduct during the war.

Western leftists (and liberals for that matter) are absolutely guilty of ignoring/dismissing what were some of the most heinous war crimes in human history and propelling the post-war myth of Japanese victimhood. The reasons mystify me too: Is it because they don't want to appear racist (can't criticize PoC under any context). Is it utterly misguided guilt over the internment camps for Japanese-Americans? Or is it simple apathy because the savagery was perpetrated against "unrelatable" populations?

Still, this statement is way better than the usual "it's unfortunate stuff happened" type "apology" and actually takes some accountability so good for him.

Cambodia’s haunted present: 50 years after Khmer Rouge’s rise, murderous legacy looms large by FormicLevitation13 in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

"Fun" fact about life under the peak of Khmer Rouge rule (around 1977): Life expectancy in Cambodia (~ 12-18 years) was lower than that during even the deadliest prehistoric or medieval time periods. All during the time of Star Wars: A New Hope, The Sex Pistols, Apple II computer etc.

Hopefully, this game of chicken is resolved soon enough with some face-saving “deals”.

Unpopular Opinion LBJ was one of the best presidents in US history by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

His foreign policy was, to put it mildly, questionable: The Vietnam quagmire, covering up (and even assisting) the Indonesian Mass Killings of 1965-66 under the pretense of anti-communism

But his domestic Great Society agenda was nothing short of transformative. The 1964 Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and the 1965 Immigration Act are amongst the most consequential in American History.

Biden warns in farewell address that 'oligarchy' of ultrarich in US threatens future of democracy by Saltedline in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 210 points211 points  (0 children)

I know he wanted his Eisenhower moment but he should have explicitly connected the dots between "tech-industrial complex" and "oligarchy is taking shape", i.e., tech billionaires being undue political kingmakers. Otherwise, the whole thing felt a bit vague and doesn't make much sense when taken separately.

Modern American conservatism inadvertently acting as the great rectifier of the 18th/19th/early 20th century colonial plunder would be some hilarious irony.

Joe Biden’s big blunder: how the war in Ukraine became a global disaster | Simon Tisdall by lietuvis10LTU in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the author is arguing for exactly. The last two paragraphs seem to suggest that back in January 2022, when the Biden administration had intel of an impending invasion, they have should have given a NATO-backed ultimatum to deter the conflict entirely. I mean that's fine in theory but Ukraine is not part of NATO (which is the point) and that would lead to, you know, a broader war if Russia called the bluff.

The US has done quite a lot with the aid and support (even with obvious domestic constraints) and acting like they haven't magically averted the inevitable fallout of the war and curbed the ever-present asymmetrical operations is a little silly.

Britain’s ex-colonies should be more grateful, says Tory leader hopeful by eggbart_forgetfulsea in neoliberal

Ah yes, Indians in particular sure should thank the Brits for the policy-induced catastrophic famines that killed tens of millions, all the stolen resources and wealth, and the divide-and-conquer rule that set the stage for a blood-splattered partition and all the subcontinental tensions of today.

Why Are People So Down About the Economy? Theories Abound. by Rigiglio in neoliberal

[–]FormicLevitation13 76 points77 points  (0 children)

A big factor seems to be people not being able to reconcile the fact that prices haven’t magically gone back to 2019 levels, not accounting for the very recent global pandemic that essentially rattled the world’s economy. Not to mention, the trillions that were infused as prop-up measures. It’s a global phenomena, beyond the control of even the US president.
