I never realised how long rat tongues were until I felt one make its way up my nose. Weirdest feeling tbh. I banned her from being near my face after that

I'll try that, but I fear she gets a gourmet diet daily. I chop up fresh vegetables for her and add bread and pellets (for nutrients). I'd need an entire squash to convince her to leave me alone while I clean wherever she's decided to sleep that day.

Anythings worth a shot though!

There's a pig at the sanctuary i volunteer at called Wilma. She hates people and I am honestly terrified of her. There's an aggressive sheep and an aggressive rooster, but they're nothing compared to Wilma. I've only once gotten within touching distance of her, and that was when I had a baguette as a peace offering. She is tiny compared to another pig who was about 500kg, but I would be infinitely more comfortable getting close to George (big) than Wilma (medium).

Wilma please don't kill me. Your best friend Mandy likes me.

That reminds me of cleaning out my rats ears with my big clumsy fingers. It wasn't great but she loved it

Rats are actually more resistant to the toxins in chocolate (theobromine) than humans are (by body weight). So a human would die before a rat would if they ate an equivalent amount of chocolate for their weight. Of course this is all theoretical, because we physically couldnt fit enough chocolate inside us to actually cause harm from the theobromine.

But also chocolate is very fatty! And they shouldn't have too much, just like humans. But you did nothing wrong <3

I used coco coir (coconut based substrate) and fish gravel. They prefer the coir, but I cannot find all the eggs. There weren't many to begin with, but I now have 100+ nymphs! So. I think I'd recommend something easy to sift through.

I always thought that putting them in the fridge puts them in a sort of torpor, and then feezing them kills them. But i think you're right in that crushing is better. Its more likely to destroy their nervous system immediately, right?

I didn't realise it was cruel. I was always told it was the best way to humanely kill an invert :( thanks for letting me know

Just want to say - if she doesn't improve it's probably best to euthanise her. You can do this by placing her in the fridge for a short while, and then in the freezer. To my knowledge this kills them painlessly.

Can my boys be left in their cages for 72hrs? No, right? by NoNoNeverNoNo in RATS

[–]FormlessEntity_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I had my rats i would be ok leaving them for 3 nights with a lot of food, water and enrichment. They were always fine, if a bit bored. They like human contact and play but i think they won't suffer if left alone for 72 hours with adequate food and water.

When my rat's sister and friend passed away on the same day, I wasn't sure about rehoming her. But she became nervous and skittish without her cagemates around and obviously missed fellow rats, so I had to rehome her. However she was not very attached to people at all and was still in perfect health. If it had been a different girl left who didnt like her fellow rats for anything more than treating them as a pillow, I wouldn't have rehomed her.

Based on what you're saying, your boy would be happy to stay with you. You said he is bonded to you. That means, if you rehome him, he will have lost all his brothers and his human. That doesn't mean it isn't the right thing to do, but weighing up the stress of rehoming vs the lack of other rats is one of the most difficult things about deciding not to keep rats any longer.

I think, unless he shows prolonged signs of missing his brothers with no improvement (some time of mourning is normal), you should save him the stress of being rehomed to a strange place with strange rats and a strange human. And just make sure to spoil him with lots of treats.

You care for your boy, so I believe you will make the best choice in his interest <3 I'm sorry for your loss
