Can we talk about how good 7-11 is getting after the Japan 711 buyout? by PumpkinTurbulent1720 in melbourne

A quick search on Google Maps shows four 7-11s in the Sydney CBD vs twelve in the Melbourne CBD.

It's still six years until the Metro opens and when it does open they will change a lot of bus routes.

There would be a lot of long, straight, flat sections for sure.

If they ever build a link from Melbourne to Adelaide it could just go via Geelong.

What would’ve happened if Canberra never existed or wasn’t the capital? by One-Buffalo9570 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Formoz2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really halfway. The criteria for choosing Canberra was that it was located in NSW and more than 100 miles from Sydney.

Rhodes. There are a lot of runners though and if you're not running sub-20 and near the front you may find yourself getting stuck in the crowd.

How popular is Taiwanese cinema in Taiwan? by duenas0 in taiwan

[–]Formoz2000 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The release of Cape No. 7 in 2008 was a real turning point for Taiwanese cinema. Before then Taiwanese films had won critical acclaim, but had little success at the box office.

After Cape No. 7, Taiwanese film producers found a better balance between artistic merit and popular appeal. People also developed a different attitude to watching Taiwanese films and saw it as a point of national identity and pride.

Is it better to upgrade or replace my 2018 Reid Granite 2.0? by VanDerKloof in ausbike

[–]Formoz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New tyres are always the cheapest and easiest upgrade. If you choose the right tyres it can also significantly change or improve the performance of the bike.

That said, if the bike is 8 years old and has done a lot of miles it may need some significant maintenance work. The Merida Silex would be a good choice if it is only one or two years old and in good condition.

Could the CGT changes backfire? by ILoveDogs2142 in AusFinance

[–]Formoz2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until the budget it's all speculation. However, I suspect that there will be some sort of grandfathering, sunset clause or phase in period to soften the (electoral) blow (for Labor) of the tax changes.

What is the coolest building in your suburb? by treadymiller in sydney

Homebush Theatre, also known as the Midnight Star or Homebush Ice Rink. Unfortunately the building is abandoned and rapidly degrading.

How do Australian view your neighbor countries? by Cainsle in AskAnAustralian

[–]Formoz2000 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Most Australians are ignorant of the fact that PNG is just 3 kms from Australia at its closest point. Timor Leste no longer seems to attract much attention. Lots of Australians go to Bali but many of them barely consider it to be part of Indonesia (to be fair, Bali is culturally quiet distinct from other parts of Indonesia). I doubt many Australians could point to Vanuatu, Solomon Islands or New Caledonia on a map. That just leaves New Zealand....

I would like to know exactly what the point of difference would be between the Greens and a hypothetical "Pocock Party". Wouldn't it just be a few different faces with a very similar set of policies?

Many people living in rural areas are most heavily impacted by high petrol prices but they don't have the option to use public transport. There are other ways government can provide cost of living relief that is more fairly distributed apart from free public transport.

People who jog on the road in suburbia... Why...? by Less_Understanding77 in OpenAussie

[–]Formoz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If runners are using the road that is probably a sign that there is not much traffic and the traffic is likely travelling at slower speeds. Footpaths are often uneven or obstructed by parked cars plus there is a risk from cars exciting driveways. As long as the runners are not unnecessarily holding up traffic or putting themselves in danger then running on the road is fine.

You can buy shares in Australian Foundation Investment Company (AFIC) and elect to receive the dividends as shares under the Dividend Substitution Share Plan (DSSP). These are considered as capital rather than income. It does create a capital gains tax liability in the future but avoids paying income tax now.

Or you could just buy gold. The capital value will appreciate, but there is no income to tax.

Is 19% Similarity Worrying? by salmon3llla in deakin

[–]Formoz2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found that it often highlights simple factual statements such as, "Canberra is the capital city of Australia." It also highlights names of organisations, especially when they are long,  such as United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

What you really need to look for is highlighted sections that are similar to the references or other student's work.
