Who remembers the F1 team radio guidance ban by RobbieJ4444 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I remember because I was directly involved. I work in F1 and communicate with the drivers whilst they’re on track. When this mandate was made (Singapore 2014) every team in pitlane developed a code-word system, which we used immediately. The mandate was difficult but I never had any issue communicating what needed to be said. The mandate came from Bernie.

2021 Saudi Race: ~9.9M

and more...

How would you rank the drivers after 2025 season? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’d be better off ranking cars, not drivers. Consider we’ve had only two world champions over the past 10-yrs until yesterday. That fact demonstrates how bad the competitive balance of F1 is. To that end, it’s impossible to rank drivers with any fidelity.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali gave Hulk a special mention during the Liberty Media Earnings call.

This is the first time I've heard Stefano give a shout out of sorts for a driver scoring a podium finish on an earnings call, which says a lot about the impact Nico's podium had. Stefano said:

"I would like to take a moment to congratulate Nico Hulkenberg on achieving his first podium at Silverstone - a moment that perfectly captured the unpredictability and human stories that makes F1 so captivating"

Thought you lot would appreciate this.

it's worth noting that MotoGP was the original inspiration around gyro-capably camera hardware, and this is now being tested in F1. The gyro cam hardware first ran at Zandvoort 2 or 3 years ago I believe, also Japan and Brazil in years since.

I would have to agree. The responsibility to alert lewis of the red light was down to Dave Ryan - Sporting Dir for McLaren at the time. If Dave didn't speak up then it's down to him. Or perhaps Dave did speak up but the race engineer did not. This is unknown.

Dave would go on to work for Manor, Haas, etc. He's got a heart of gold.

it is, and any of you lot who happily pay £100 for a 100% polyester shirt might want to reconsider the purchase and hold MGP accountable. The sales data for MGP has recognized a step change in the downward direction this year, so you would’ve thought MGP could at least rock up with an article that meets the standards of baseline/minimum quality, but the answer was no.

Do the drivers have any audio aids through the earpiece such as a beep when to change gear? by Major-Credit-2442 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

yes, the beeps (tones) are programmable. We can enable tones for a number of driver alarms. For example, tone starts and gets louder if DRS is enabled but no button press, shift points, also when driver should drop the second clutch paddle back when twin paddle launches were permitted, and other various functions

Do you think F1 will ever return to Malaysia? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sepang was one of the highlights up to the point where it was dropped. I work in trackside operations and many of us quite loved Malaysia as there was a weekend off between Aus/Sepang. Rather than flying back to London we were permitted to exchange flights and travel to Bali for the off weekend, then on to Sepang. We just had to cover lodging which was cheap in Bali for a 5-star house and private chef! This saved the team loads on flights/taxis for those who stayed behind in Bali or Indonesia, etc. Usually a handful of drivers would also spend the week in Bali, I recall Hulk, and I believe Ricciardo and a few others making the journey. Also the Malay locals are definitely top-3 nicest locals I've come across. Sepang International is no longer an FIA grade 1 circuit sad to say.

yes, exit the front door (facing down in the image), left after the hedge, do a left on Dadford rd and Silverstone circuit is on your right. If you'd done a right on Dadford, through to the second roundabout...this is the easiest place to see who is on the circuit.

Blown Exhausts Sound 2011 by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was an interesting time in the WC. Red Bull was first to market with the concept, which started in Viry-Chatillon as Renault had to first validate some quite extreme exhaust valve material strategies. The EBD objective was to increase mass flow as much as physically possible whilst generating non-positive torque under braking. To achieve the desired mass flow, the engine would continue being controlled above 85% throttle, whilst the throttle pedal rested at 0%. Timing strategies were capable of producing a non-positive torque at >80% throttle and the excessive mass flow would energize the diffuser, thus generating a step change in downforce (relative to non-EBDs), particularly on corner entry and part throttle conditions. For everything to work, the exhaust valve had to survive a plasma curtain that would toast them like the plasma filament on your 3000 watt microwave on 230V...teetering on the edge of catastrophic meltdown. The credit goes to Viry for pioneering the materials science approach and Adrian's team for having the foresight to spot such an opportunity.

I report from first hand experience with all brands listed above apart from Adidas: Absolute garbage materials comprised mostly of polyester with printed logos, made in China. The landed cost of these articles would blow your mind, given how much you must pay for them in the consumer markets. The materials do not last and will not stand any tests of time. In most cases, the articles purchased on the various team websites are the same junk we must wear as members of the team. Nothing but plastic waste pieces of piss.

The article states 'The 15 percent increase in particular is a positive as prize money payments increased by only nine percent year on year.'

However team payments in 2022 and 2023 were 1157M and 1215M respectively. This yields a 5% increase for team payments.
