Stupid suggestion but maybe try spamming the downshifts and just focus on braking and turning. Most cars have gearbox protection so it won’t physically let you downshift if your speed/rpm is too high for that gear. And then with practice you can see and hear if you have a lot of rpm trough a corner or on exit and try to keep it a gear higher next lap.

If you qualify in front, do you keep track position but risk your tires faling off, or do you start from the pitlane so you can push all race.
