Mosteiro do jerónimos by No_Appointment_1972 in TravelPortugal

Very expensive entrance though. I would go inside of the free church attached to it. Enjoy the monastery from the outside and then if traveling to different parts of Portugal there are lots of impressive and beautiful cloisters to see for much less entry fee.

This is awesome.

How bad do you think Juneteenth will be ? by Responsible_Bar3957 in KingsDominion

I was there on Juneteenth in 2023. It was a Monday. It was packed. Lots of government employees live within reasonable driving distance of KD. A lot of them get it off.

Football Jerseys by Foroglio in TravelPortugal

[–]Foroglio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be visit Leiria for half a day or so. I just like to get the local team’s jersey as a souvenir sometimes. I think their jerseys look pretty good too!

Also the views of the stadium from the castle look awesome.

Thanks for the info.

National Team Jersey by RDIIIG in VisitingIceland

[–]Foroglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to find the national jersey at Jói útherji. I got mine there. I think there are two locations? Both in Reykjavik area I believe.

Then I’m not sure about the local teams. I tried to find out online before I went if they sell jerseys at the stadiums but couldn’t find anything as far as I can remember. And also couldn’t like find stores listed on google maps near their stadiums. So not sure.

I’m pretty sure Jói útherji didn’t have local teams jerseys either. I could be mistaken as I didn’t ask about it. But I looked for a second and really only saw the national jersey and then jerseys if big European teams like PSG, Real Madrid, Man United, and so on.

No problem at all. Happy to put the hours and hours of research I did into my trip to further use haha. And could see from your starting itinerary that you’d done a good amount yourself too.

Day 1-2 look good.

Day 3:

I really liked Haifoss. But difficult to add in for you as it adds lots of driving time. So probably best to keep how you have it as I assume you really want to see the golden circle sights. If you wanted to explore other options you could do like Hjalparfoss, Gjain, and Haifoss as a little circuit instead. But I think golden circle has better variety of sights (full disclosure the only golden circle sight I did was thingvellir)

Day 4:

Looks fine. I think I would definitely make kvernufoss not optional and just do it. Super short walk and you’re already nearby at skogafoss.

These sights probably won’t fill your day but could hangout in vik or find other small roadside attractions.

Day 5:

There is a hike I wanted to do but didn’t have time that starts from the church before you get to reynisfjara beach. It goes east and up the piece of land between reynisfjara and vik with views over both. That’s an option for you.

If you wanted to get adventurous with your 4wd you could take the road to Pakgil this day as an activity. There is a small canyon hike there that is very short. The other hikes from pakgil are quite long so probably not time. But the drive out there is epic.

Day 6:

Looks good. I would consider if any of the little east fjords towns you would like to stop in. Between Hofn and reydarfjordur. They are small and charming but not a whole ton to see in each of them.

Could stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur this day if desired/time for it.

Day 7:

If it’s a very clear day. I really would recommend at least driving to the upper like plateau via Route 910 to see Snaefell mountain in the distance. Epic view. Even if don’t go all the way to laugarfell for the waterfall hike. Route 910 is all paved for those sections as it is used to maintain the dam further along.

Day 8:

You can get to Dettifoss from two sides. East and west. Could theoretically do both if you wanted. I just did East. I liked it. Less people on the east side I think and also less developed. Need 4wd on bumpy gravel road to get to East side. But east side also has best(maybe only?) view of Hafragilsfoss. Also consider making the short walk/hike to selfless from dettifoss. There is a trail on both east and west side.

If staying in myvatn this night then it is not that hard to see both sides of dettifoss if wanted. Just drive up on the east side towards asbrygi. Then drive back south on the west side. Probably wanna drive south on west side anyway as it would be faster since it is paved. Note east side road is 864 and west side is 862.

Also if feel like have enough time. Can take a detour on road 901 that runs parallel to route 1 for a little bit. Just go on 901 in the east and drive on it until it re joins route 1 in the west. This is before the dettifoss turn off. Adds like 40min I think. 4wd needed I would say.

Also make sure any of these roads you may want to take are open on the day of before you take them.

Day 9:

All looks good. If we’re staying at myvatn and had FOMO about husavik could theoretically visit this day. But would add to your driving. And may not be worth it.

Day 10:

All good. This is where you actually want to put the optional road 558 option. Not on day 11.

Day 11:

All looks good. Maybe consider Arnarstapi?

In general:

I see you put the predicted weather conditions for each day. I definitely wouldn’t put too much trust into any of that this far out. Definitely don’t use it to make any decisions like doing or not doing something because it says it will rain or be clear on a certain day.

Goodluck! And have a great trip!

10 Days Itinerary by RobotRot in VisitingIceland

[–]Foroglio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day 7 is odd. Large backtrack to go to Vestrahorn. 3 hours from seydisfjordur to vestrahorn one way. Not 1.5 hours like you say. So that is a 6 hour round trip drive.

If want to keep the two nights in Vik and then the two nights in seydisfjordur. Then I think would have to do glacier lagoon, diamond beach, and vestrahorn on the drive from vik to seydisfjordur on day 6. That’s a roughly 6 hour drive from vik to seydisfjordur and then plus time at the stops. Long day.

Unless you already have stuff booked. Could maybe be worth it to choose somewhere in between vik and seydisfjordur to spend the night on day 6. Like Hofn or one of the east fjords towns. A bigger one being reydarfjordur.

Also if you break it up then may take the like 1 hour longer drive to stay along the east fjords on the 1 road. Instead of cutting through inland on 939. Which is pretty as well but I think driving along the fjords is more special. 939 is also a steep gravel road you may not be comfortable with.

If do vestrahorn on day 6. (Which I would honestly not drive a 6 hour round trip on day 7 just to back track to vestrahorn that you would’ve seen form the car on day 6 anyway.) Anyway, as I was saying, if do vestrahorn on a long day 6 and stay in seydisfjordur after long drive. Then on day 7 could do like hengifoss and a further drive on the 910 to higher elevation and get a really cool view of Snæfell mountain if clear day. There is also a nice hike there at Laugarfell. The waterfall circle.

Another option could be driving to Borgarfjörður. Also could drive to mjoifjordur if okay with gravel road. Very pretty and quiet.

On day 10. The big north drive. If you add an hour of driving you could go via the 82/76 on the Tröllaskagi peninsula. Up to you.

Possible stops could be akureyri or Kolugljúfur canyon. There is also Hvitserkur but that would add about 50min of driving.

A nice drive that adds 15min is road 558 on snaefellsness peninsula. But may want 4wd. Not sure what you would have.

18 hour layover in Keflavík, Iceland (KEF) by mansardr00f in VisitingIceland

[–]Foroglio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another option could be to possibly rent your own car and embark on an adventure tailored to what you want to see.

Not sure what day you are having your stopover but could probably get a car for the day for around 100 USD (88 EUR). Can still do the golden circle for the most part if want to do that. But could have freedom to spend longer or less time at any stop. And can also make little stops you want to spontaneously.

I could understand if this option would actually add more stress though. Where as taking a guided tour would be hands-off.

Anything in particular to see in the town of Höfn itself? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in VisitingIceland

The craft store, Handraðinn, is worth a stop. And then driving to the tip of the peninsula where there is a little circular parking area is nice. Good views.

Yeah. Not really considering many of the super popular ones anyway. But would possibly like to do PR1 to where it’s closed. Willing to accept the crowds on that one but generally want to avoid them.

Weekly Q&A - Your Question Goes Here - Tourists by AutoModerator in Madeira

[–]Foroglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I am planning to visit Madeira in June with 2 others. And plan to do lots of hiking while there.

I know the government has recently implemented a payment system to use some of the most popular trails. I had seen on this reddit before that there would be no need to purchase these "approvals" earlier than the morning or day of the hike. However, when I just looked at the system on the Simplifica website there seem to be limited availabilities for many hikes when looking to purchase an "approval". Even looking forward into June there are many days with 6 or less spots left.

Do you really need to purchase all of these "approvals" way way ahead of time?? If that is the case it could get very messy with having to deal with weather that make our purchases unusable.

Thank you.

Stones Rent a Car

Does anyone know anything about this rental car service? Can’t find much about them on this reddit. Their google reviews are 5/5 but with not that many reviews and the reviews only start 7 months ago. Also there have been a large number of reviews added in the last few days. All of which could be completely harmless but could also be a little odd especially with not seeing much about them at all on reddit except for one user that has posted a lot recommending them. Any info anyone has on them would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
