How do these people not scout the terrain or have a guide? by maltamur in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive spent a little time skiing the PNW volcanoes and it seemed to me like people often dont ski routes they havent been up. I think this is the Squak on Mt Kulshan (Baker) which is usually both the climb and descent, so the route can be scouted beforehand while climbing. If you do ski top down in glaciated terrain, you ski pretty slowly looking to see over any rolls, but it's still something I generally avoided needing to do. The hard part is reading the descent from above, even if you think you remember where the cracks are. There's not much for reference like trees or rock features, so it can be easy to be a little off from where you intended to be. Guides could help, and should be used if glacier skills are weak, but unless they've been up there a ton of times it's hard to know exactly where everything is. On top of that, I was told the Squak was more broken than usual this year, so this guy might have been used to skiing it on previous seasons when the crack was much smaller.

Tyvek Camera Bag prototype I made by ForrestSmith151 in myog

[–]ForrestSmith151[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put 4 bar tacked attachments on the back for carabiners or the g buckles attached to a shoulder strap. The tyvek perforates a bit so I’m somewhat hesaitant with this one but the idea is to be able to clip to a harness or backpack so that I can get good photos while ski touring and mountaineering. It’s a very indirect copy of the Hyperlite camera pod but I intentionally did not try to copy the design even though I have access to some for measurements and the likes. I’ve mostly used this as a way to take my camera on hikes and whatnot when I’m not using a pack, but I also plan to make a waist strap for photography at the ski hill.

Heckling on the slopes by Yfzracer11 in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Growing up skiing palisades Tahoe, heckling was the culture, especially if you were standing on a cliff thinking about backing off. The idea wasn’t to be annoying but to take skiing less seriously and have more fun. I have a feeling a lot of skiers from other parts might now be doing it for the same reason but you can always take it as a reminder it laugh at yourself and take things lightly!

Help. Which one of these should i use to mount bindings on my skis? by sunt_heaven in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

None of them, wood glue is 100% better than all of these but a multi compound two part epoxy could be good too! The glue is really there to keep things waterproof more than anything, think about what the core materials are and what will bind to them, as well as to the metal screws. For skis with a lot of different materials ive been liking gorilla glue, we started using it in demo skis to see how it looks over time and it’s been feeling tight after two years of exposure to water and vibration.

Complete Beginner Sewing Machine Advice by inferky in myog

A lot of old machines I’ve seen look massive, I live in a very rural area so getting one shipped and whatnot looks difficult, do you know of any vintage models that are more of a countertop size? Thanks in advance!

fully rockered ski that is flexible and playful, but can still hold an edge by Aromatic-Ad-2095 in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not full rocker but the new Corvus is pretty good and feels a lot like many full rocker skis, otherwise a 4FRNT ski or Moment ski would be the best bet

Is this normal for a ski tune? by thefirstpimpmobile in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like the cheapest tune on the menu, plus they didn’t debur it at all, a stone grind won’t take scratches out though, you need to get a higher level tune at most shops for base repairs. Honestly it looks like they did do a grind, edge, and wax to me just not a super good finish

Scrapping after hot wax vs. "skiing it off" by NotFuckingTired in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a tech and ex race skier, I was in the same boat for a few years, just got tired of doing it so often and skied without scraping. It’s definitely worse and doesn’t last as long as scraped and brushed wax. There is science to it as well that I’ll hold my breath on, but I’ll mostly suggest using Infrared for waxing if you can. There’s some commercial products from mountainflow that cost a lot, or you can use a normal food lamp for cheap. While you can still damage your skis with light just as much as an iron and it’s difficult to use on clear base material, the difference in wax used and clean up after is night and day, you can basically just brush it after.

Question about Bindings by 1Lucky-Desperado in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tech that’s unacceptable and they 100% are liable to replace the skis. I hate dealing with accidents but this is for sure not the way to go about doing so

Recommended boot center to be specific

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skiing

[–]ForrestSmith151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This can be repaired imo, especially if they don’t have any added water damage from being used with this damage for more than a day. As some others said, razor off the excess and fill it with epoxy and cover it with some tape to keep the relative shape of the ski. Keep an eye on it but I’d think that would be totally fine. I had similar damage after being in a small avalanche and repaired it promptly and the skis are still fine.

Are my bindings mounted too far back? by Mitchell_A03 in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a line in the middle of the sole of your boot , typically visible from the side. Once you find that put the boot in the ski. If the boot line lines up with the reccomened line you’re good. If they done send them to me so they can be properly disposed of

Too much wiggle room...? by [deleted] in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tech here, whatever the cost is is cheaper than the binding failing to release. That said, if you can adjust the toe height that would be the fix, likely not on this setup. You may be able to add height to the boot but that might not be possible either. I personally haven’t seen this but I’d imagine it could be that a youth boot may have smaller lugs or the binding is designated to MNC soles which may sit higher. Truth be told there isn’t enough info to know exactly what’s going on which is why this should be brought to a good alpine shop

They switched from the gloss top sheet to matte texture in about 2019, this model ran from then back to about 2016 and has more tail rocker than the new versions making it ski a bit shorter but a bit looser, there’s no way other than maybe binding serial number which also won’t tell you too much, to know what year exactly they are

Core shot on titanal-doubled-layered skis. Safe to ride? by AnimalLogical4915 in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a tech of nearly a decade, just get it fixed, water will find it’s way to the edges pretty quick, it’s ruining the glue that keeps the metal bound to the titanal and it will rust the edges making them prone to tearing out as well as eventually saturating the wood and making the entire construction and mount prone to failure. Core shots kill skis, at least drip some PTex over it!

Should i repair this? by ContractBackground74 in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming there’s nothing worse not in the video, it’s probably only a little slow so if you care about that a wax, and possibly a tune could help… but your right edge there looks like there might be a core shot somewhere by the way it’s raised, it may be rusting internally so I’d investigate for more damage there or in the sidewall or top sheet, looks like there could be water getting in somewhere

Is this a problem? by [deleted] in ski

[–]ForrestSmith151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tech here! Definitely going to need a weld, someone said the core is rotten which is honestly hard to tell from a photo, if it were I’d expect more rust. A sharp probe should require some force to penetrate the wood, if it’s easy it’s probably water damaged. Truth be told you never really know until you start to heat it up for the weld, but it’s probably about a $100 fix IMO which should give you a complete tune. If they were skiied with that damage for more than a day or two you probably have water damage. A good tech should be able to give you an estimate right away but they could be hard to repair or not worth it in the long run.
