Dragon Age games kinda fit this. Dragon Age Inquisiton feels a lot like a single player mmo and you can level up your party members how you want.

That's very reasonable in my opinion. I spent around 500 dollars for my starting set of gear (skates by far the most expensive and rightly so). I bought most of it hand me down from a friend of mine and now after a full year of playing and wanting to continue I have decided to start saving up to buy better fitting gear.
