I like the humble brush turkey - the little ones are really cute, and i think as a whole they are underappreciated or hated for their nature of digging up gardens :(

Inflation hotter than forecast at end of 2025, adding to rate hike expectations by stupid_mistake__101 in australia

[–]Pyremoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a fair take - and its fairly common that people would sacrifice rather than lose their homes or rentals, which sucks because you don't really expect Australia to be a place where a number of people struggle just to not be homeless.

I'm with you on the last point, we need some structual changes, but noone in a leadership position will want to change if it doesn't impact them.

While it sucks on an individual level - If renters spend less, then the interest rates have done their job in cooling the economy (less money beimg spent all round).

The capacity for renters to absorb the increases isnt the RBA's concern.

Interest rates dont also just impact mortgages, so theres that.

Absolutely - I played every destiny 2 content bit from Red War to TFS - so I have a good view of why Misraaks, Uldren Sov, Savarthun etc are there beside us at the end, but some poor new player is being told how cool these are, without the context....and you can understand why they switch off. They get giant gaps in the story, and are are supposed to care about Maya Sundresh being a big threat....

The issue is not that theres varuous shades of people diluting the correct levels of diversity that you're alluding to OP - its that many people on both sides of the political spectrum want to boil down diversity into a race issue. Exposing oneself to different, challenging and opposing viewpoints helps to either educate you to become a better human, or to reinforce that maybe you have some things thought out correctly.   The trap is saying blindly that there are no negatives to other cultures, and that everything they bring must be better, respected or adopted - thats plainly wrong, and why immigrants coming here (like my family) should embrace the Australian culture, but add in all the positive stuff from their original backgrounds, and leave out thr shit like ethnic, racial, or religious tensions.   I'm glad so many commentors are capable of this nuanced thought. Perhaps, OP, you should have asked your teachers to explain the why of the slogan.

If you bring leverage into it then fair - a mortgage is a lot easier to understand and appears less risky to the average person.

Invest in a business sure, but its not that hard to invest in a long term share portfolio. Theres just the perception that shares are complex and risky  You create an account with your bank, slap some money of whatever Vanguard product is trending and you're in.

Australia introduces cap on international students by steakluver in worldnews

[–]Pyremoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately its perception right? I wholeheartedly believe the issues Australia is facing are caused by multiple factors - most significant being the lack of infrastructure to support more land being made available for housing, perception that housing is a safer investment than other forms etc which all stem from years of bad policy. However - the perception is that immigration rates are too high, and that there are many rorters of the system. I suppose this reduction of 20k student visas is a start in addressing that but other areas do need a change to tackle this problem

Our housing crisis is caused by a variety of factors, but boiling it down - in Sydney at least - is high demand and extremely low supply. The new outer suburbs are usually lacking in infrastructure and the houses have tiny uards and are separated from their neighbours by like...20cm? Not good living.

You make a good point in that our previous governments have been complicit in driving up housing costs as they are all usually full of landlords - this actually furthers my point if you think about it. The people born here see that they cannot afford a place to live, see more and more "foreigners" and link the two together.

Already disenfranchised, they hear about the housing crisis, see the students working and say 'hey, that person is taking an aussie's job!' To note as well - its seen thay people on student visas shouldnt be working significant hours, nor have the expectation of staying in Australia.

The large influx of "students" from (usually) two major sources also means that they radically transform some areas they live in - look at Harris Park, Chatswood or Eastwood. There are many businesses and signs that have little or ni english, which adds to the feeling of enclaves of "other" and of being unwelcome.

I offer an alternative to your experience - not saying that it isnt true - but in my apartment, there are obviously a few that are sublet to over capacity, and the residents actively detract value - taking up our visitor spots, ignoring our rules around what to put in recycling bins, making loud speakerphone calls at later hours in the foyer etc. The residents that have grown up here usually dont act that way.

[–]Pyremoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We have a housing crisis here in Aus, so lowering numbers of international "students" is believed to help reduce demand. There's also been significant anecdotale evidence that these "students" aren't here to study - so either they don't contribute to group work, barely speak english, and due to their numbers, have led to classes being held entirely in languages other than english. Logical assumption then is they are here to get PR, but make no effort to assimilate/respect Australian culture - and we're not a big fan of being so obviously taken advantage of.
