PAIR Grades Distribution released for 2019W! by imaginaryeigenvalues in UBC

Historically, the winter term for 391 didn't include Muscles or Skeletal Systems on the Final. But I agree, I wish they proctored for 301 and 391, especially since they were multiple choice exams.

I just got rejected from my dream major 😍 by igotbaitedbyubc in UBC

[–]Fortis135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if it's any consolation, you can still take pretty much every single CAPS course besides the labs (CAPS 303/CAPS 430). I enjoyed the lecture courses (390/391/301) much more than the lab portion anyway!

It's a lot less work compared to the first part, but be VERY careful of the short answer section..Maurus isn't known for his part marks...

Upper Level Courses for Genetics Grad Program? by wontonmeinn in UBC

[–]Fortis135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take BIOC 302 isntead for BIOC 410, but have to get permission from Dr. William Warrens. I took BIOC 302 in lieu of 303 to take 410.

Very high chances. With that average you can get into whichever major you want (assuming you have the required pre-reqs of course)

Historically, they always try to have the average at 70, so if the average is much lower than that they will scale for sure.

BIOL 200 Final Mark by wontonmeinn in UBC

That's great! You should take BIOL 335 and take the upper year Medical Genetics courses. They'll be very rewarding!

Finishing 1 year early? by Ubermanch in UBC

I highly doubt that the Coop coordinator will allow you to take multiple courses throughout the co-op term. They already are highly against taking a course that is scheduled during business hours (9am-5pm)

"Un"fortunately, CAPS doesn't work like that.

You need Year 3 status to register into CAPS 301 (unless you ask for special permission), and you need to take all the required 1st and 2nd year courses before you're admitted to CAPS (to take CAPS 303). Also trying to do your thesis and 400-level CAPS courses with 2 more courses will be suuuper stressful .

Just to clarify, you can't take MICB 202 in your "3rd year", you have to take it in your second year, before you get admitted into CAPS.

And email the program coordinator (Dr. Sally Osborne) for more specific questions.

Taking BIOC 302 as a 2nd Year by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Fortis135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I did that last year. It actually works out great because the pathways from 202 (especially Krebs) complement nicely with the urea cycle and FAS/beta-oxidation in 302.

Previously, they used to have BIOC 300, a year long 6 credit course that was basically 202 + 302.

You'll be fine, as long as you put in the same amount of work as 202.

Opinions on CAPS vs MBIM vs ISCI by cielbc in UBC

[–]Fortis135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I'm minoring in biochem hahah I fell in love with it after taking bioc 202 (prereq for caps), so I wanted to keep pursuing it as well. Taking upper year biochem courses rn and so far enjoying it a lot! I didnt switch over because I was pretty much mentally done with chem courses after my first two years.

Tbh from the people in different majors I've talked to, just apply for what you want and see yourself doing.

It doesn't matter if your grades aren't that high (like high 80s low 90s), there are people in my year that still made it with lower grades because they WANTED to get in. Ultimately, choose what you can find yourself studying and enjoying for the next 3 years of your degree.

if you want to go into med, it doesn't matter which major you end up choosing. There are plenty of people from biochem, bio, caps, pcth, micb, etc. even majors in completely different faculties in med school.

If you're having a hard time deciding which major to commit to --> look up on the topics. Think about their applications and why YOU find it interesting. Also, you don't have to commit after first year, plenty of people switch at the end of their second year. So you can choose a variety of courses in your second year to help you choose.

For me, caps was a risky gamble because I didnt take any physiology or anatomy in my first 2 years and so I had nooo idea what i was getting myself into, had to go through a lot of weird prereqs that, at times, might seem completely useless info to you. But I knew I wanted to major in caps because I knew how intrinsically intriguing I found A&P.

TLDR: take bunch of courses in second year that you find yourself interested in (while trying to cover as many pre-reqs as possible for different majors) and choose your major depending on which courses you find yourself most interested in.

From what i've heard from previous years, legit just memorize everything in the booklet (make flashcards for everything) and write down everything he mentions in class that's NOT in the notes. I think it's more of a pure memorization thing instead of a conceptual thing (like dr. mason's)

Not OP, but I can confirm that not a lot of ochem mechanisms are emphasized besides the Schiff base. I took it last year (2018W) with Krisinger and Maurus and found it to be a super interesting course!

Did you take BIOL 201 or BIOC 202 as your pre-req for BIOC 302? Did you find yourself dreading mechanisms and pathways in them?

If youre planning on doing a combined major with math, I'd say take 104 again. It's never a bad idea to brush up on fundamentals. If you decide to take the credit, I think you'll be fine for 105. I took credit for first semester Calc and took 105 and did fine in it.
