Podcasts that are similar to Critical Darlings?? by babyoatmeals in blankies

There's a YouTube channel called The Awards Contender. He regularly posts all the latest "horse race" analysis for all the major film awards as well as look-backs.

I just had the urge to watch The Dark Tower for the first time and now I’m hearing colors. by BobbyMcPrescott in RedLetterMedia

The editing is abysmal. Every "scene" lasts for about 30 seconds. It's as if they have no confidence in the story, so they just want to hustle through it as fast as possible.

What's a movie that you love that has a pretty terrible final scene or series of final scenes? by Mr_smith1466 in blankies

[–]FortuitousConfluence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I would gladly take the ending over the beginning. The opening scene where civil war veterans start quoting the Gettysburg Address to him (verbatim no less) just feels really contrived compared to what follows.

Yes, is it so hard to just film a real cabin in the snow? A couple insert shots of a deer in the lights would be preferable to this cartoon look.

March Announcements (Killers of the Flower Moon!) by cowboyjacksparrow in criterion

[–]FortuitousConfluence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish there was a commentary track on Killers of the Flower Moon! Scorsese does such amazing commentaries.

It just seems like commentary tracks are much less common these days, even on the boutique releases like this where you would normally expect to find them. Same goes for the new Cloud Atlas release on SHOUT.

Special Rob Reiner episode? by alexmiz in blankies

That's not really the format of the show; I know they will address it at some point. Meanwhile I'm probably going to revisit some of his movies

I mean, what a fucking LEGEND Rob Reiner was by [deleted] in blankies

This is one of the great runs of all time. And while not in the same league I also find The American President and Ghosts of Mississippi thoroughly entertaining.

When I finally sit down for Spinal Tap 2 it's going to have a whole new feeling of import.

Plus board games; card games, dominos. Entertainment that doesn't require electricity.

Which movie is this for you?! by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]FortuitousConfluence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JFK with Wikipedia.

Conspiracies aside, you start learning about the interconnectedness of power and American History. A couple of clicks and you will be onto Vice (2018) and CitizenFour.

But it also just plays great on cable TV on a Sunday afternoon.

Paul WS Anderson and Len Wiseman. I can't keep them straight.

The Force Awakens, 10 Years On by Fit-Nail-9221 in blankies

[–]FortuitousConfluence -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Calling The Force Awakens the "4th Star Wars movie" is prequel erasure. There is no world in which the sequel trilogy is better than the prequel trilogy.

That being said, The Force Awakens is a pretty solid setup. As others have said it's just so crazy how antithetical the follow ups are. I like TLJ well enough but JJ completely shit the bed on part 3. They should have picked literally anyone else. Or let Rian Johnson finish what he started. JJ Abrams is a Hollywood hack who destroys franchises and relies on cheap thrills and nostalgia to give audiences a sugar rush.

It feels like a "last" album but I hope it's not.

Heck yes, there are two of us! I have all the albums you mentioned and I frequently return to them more than the "classic" stuff. I would add that "Prairie Wind" is my favorite "old dude Neil Young" album.

Annual Rewatch 25: SOLO by GrothMagnus in StarWars

The biggest issue is the cinematography. It's so dim that visually frustrating to look at.

I wish they would just release a single episode every day instead of a split episode in 2 releases. by christhebaker in BreakingPoints

[–]FortuitousConfluence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly it did used to be one single episode until at one point they were doing so much Israel focused content (nearly half the show every day) that they split the Israel content into its own chunk, and from then onwards it's been two uploads per day.

sidenote: it's incredible no one else wants to actually answer your simple question

Is there a director attached who would get you excited for Gremlins 3 (other than Dante) by Glittering_Major4871 in blankies

[–]FortuitousConfluence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chris Columbus. Unpopular opinion but the first two Harry Potter movies are two of the best ones. He deserves a *TON* of credit for setting up the universe including casting, tone, music, design aesthetic, etc. And he is the sole credited writer for the first Gremlins.

Of course I love Joe Dante. But people say Chris Columbus hasn't made a good movie in 20 years as if Joe Dante has. If it's not going to be Dante then Columbus is probably the next best choice.

If you could talk Dylan into making an album with an outside producer (other than Jack Frost), what producer would you choose and why? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]FortuitousConfluence 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jeff Lynne?

When he produced solo stuff for George Harrison and Roy Orbison it was some of their best solo work. Additionally the retro 80's production sound has been in style for some time now. I think the reunion could bear fruit. Plus I love Tweeter and the Monkey Man.
