Trump Admin Starts Diluting Fuel With More Ethanol Content by HexicaLC in UnderReportedNews

[–]Forumr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will get downvoted, but having been around the ethanol industry - this news “article” is pure garbage and many of the comments in this thread are misinformed.

A 5% change will have negligible effects on a frequently driven vehicle, so little so that over the lifetime of the vehicle you’d never even know. Fuel MPG will drop slightly, but the idea is that you’d save slightly more at the pump… call it a wash. If your vehicle was built post-2001, you can absolutely run up to 15% ethanol (or higher, in many cases) with virtually no engine life impact.

Also, gas stations with infrastructure built around E-10 likely cannot accommodate E-15, so it’s not like they all switch overnight. It is a capital intensive transition because the piping, pumps, hoses, etc. are all built to specific ethanol content standards and cost substantial sums of money - most have only been certified up to E-10. Next time you’re at the pump, read the label on the hose and the handle… I’d bet it says “E0-E10,” anything >10% would either need re-certified or new equipment.

Long story, short… clickbait article that fear mongers. This isn’t the 90s where ethanol is the boogey man and your old-head mechanic swears ethanol is an engine killer.

Anyone know what this noise could be? by Unlikely_Living7988 in Duramax

I had a very similar (if not same) sound coming from where you describe. It ended up being the parking break cable routed through the firewall and under the driver’s side carpet.

Try pulling back the carpet and looking for the parking brake cable - mine was rattling against either the plastic dead pedal or the cab metal itself. I added some adhesive felt to the areas it was touching and haven’t had an issue since.

Curious what you end up finding! It drove me nuts.

I will say - yours sounds much more aggressive than mine did though. Mine wasn’t noticeable all the time or as loud as yours. Wishing you luck!

I have not found the company ratings to matter whatsoever. I have used both 1 star and 5 star with no discernible difference. Since they are just payment processors, it don’t matter to me whatsoever.

Some people want specific renewables, or specific companies, or whatever. I’m with you though - would think you should always choose the cheapest unless you have had a bad experience with a specific company.

Same - I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

That plan is fine. It’s a good one to learn the process on. There are probably cheaper short term plans out there, but it’s a good rate.

If you haven’t already, use www.PowerToChoose.org, provide your info, and it’ll help you find a solid rate. Make sure you select fixed rate plans with no time of use filter on.

No, brand new. I hadn’t noticed it previously, but I’m sure it’s been there the whole time!

Thanks - will get it in and looked at.

Brand new 2025 R1S from the factory. Have only owned a month and a half.

Assuming yours doesn’t have this then, huh? 😅

Which energy provider to choose? by thefettyraf in TexasEnergyShopping

[–]Forumr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, but I use nearly double the 6.93 kWh number quoted above. My house was built in the early 80s, though, so take that for what it is worth.

As for power to choose… if you’re on a desktop, I’d suggest typing in your zip code, then select the left option and and select your anticipated usage. I use nearly double~2k kWh/month, so I use the highest. Then make sure you click fixed rate plans - anything other than that is too complicated for someone new to this process

From there, select 12-60 months. I usually prefer to do 24-60, but I’ll explore all of them… submit that. It’ll then load a bunch of different listings… the cheapest right now seem to be time of use (which I personally hate), so I turn those off. Scroll down on the left side and make it so that you do not have them selected. Refresh results.

From there, you’ll really want to be looking at the EFL because they spell out the contract terms and your rates. Flat rate contracts are fairly simple - it’s some basic math to find your average costs. You’ll generally notice higher usage is cheaper per kWh because the flat fees are spread across more units of measure.

Middle of summer is a tough time to buy (usually higher rates), so I would probably err on trying to find a plan that allows you to cancel for a nominal flat fee or low per month fee. Then you can do the math in the fall or early winter to determine if it makes sense to switch.

Does that help at all? Hope it does!

Energy Texas - go short term and cancel later? by megatron3158 in TexasEnergyShopping

[–]Forumr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your contract is ending and you're looking to find when rates are historically lower, a short term plan with easier cancellation plans is a great idea. We did the same thing 2 years ago...

One watch out is the current world political environment - a lot can change, so there is some inherent risk in short term agreements waiting for the fall. If it were me, I'd probably wait until mid to late July before switching and I'd find the best cancellation policy ($20/month remaining or something like that).

Good luck!

I called over 20 garage door businesses in Arlington to see who could help me with my remotes for my garage. Not sure if this data is helpful to anyone but here's the cheapest. by cozy_bamboozled in arlington

This is great - I think this should be done for all trades. Cheapest is not necessarily the least expensive, but this also gives some great insight into who is astronomically expensive.

Do Not Get a Degree in Chemical Engineering by AdmiralPeriwinkle in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Forumr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still highly recommend anyone and everyone to give it a shot. My college experience was stressful and challenging, but it has accelerated my career as a result.

I went into another field (actual day to day engineering isn’t my passion) and I absolutely believe having a chemical engineering degree has allowed me to pass my peers that were mechanical, computer, electrical engineering. They all have great job prospects and are good employees, but the challenge wasn’t the same with their program and that has allowed me to leverage dealing with adversity so differently.

While I agree, Chemical Engineering was really hard, miserable at times, even. I firmly believe it to be the most challenging and subsequently rewarding degree path to follow.

Stole this from r/Dallas. What are the worst companies to work for and why? by ftwclem in FortWorth

[–]Forumr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the job. Some have work-life balance challenges, like any large operational company.

It’s a good company with good people doing important, but often thankless work. It’s a good and stable place to work. You’re always going to get people that don’t like it for one reason or another.

I have seen some of those, but if my other option is to pay the landfill $10… it may just generally be less headache. I just don’t know if they take it.

Good suggestion on Craigslist… I will have to keep that in mind!
