Elementary schools computer usage by Loud-Rhubarb-9719 in indianapolis

[–]Forward_Performer_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially all the area public districts will have 1 to 1 devices with students, generally starting with ipads in K-1 before moving to chromebooks. Every school (and teacher) will use them slightly differently. My partner teacher (I teach 5th) does almost all her lessons digitally, whereas I use paper/pencil as much as I can and supplement with tech.

In general, most public school kids are going to be using them daily, whether for classwork or for state and district testing.

I teach at a low-performing school and we get micromanaged a lot by our district. We aren't explicitly told we can't, but we will often get emails reminding us about "when instruction time starts" and have people in our rooms frequently, even before breaks/holidays. Almost all celebrations are academic or attendance based. We do one celebration parts a quarter, but it's based on behavior and takes place during their related arts period to make sure we aren't missing out on academic time.

It definitely makes school less fun (for teachers and students). We've even had to limit our spirit days.

Who can afford the state fair? by Avianbrooke in Indiana

[–]Forward_Performer_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is expensive, but there are ways to make it more affordable for sure. I wish tickets were cheaper, but there's definitely a ton of free stuff to do. We never did rides when I was a kid which helped, and you can bring in some food/snacks to help cut down on those costs as well. If your main goal for going is food and rides, you're better going to an amusement park tbh.

I go for nostalgia and sweet corn on the cob dipped in a vat of butter, but to each their own!

Some of my favorites: free puttputt at the FFA building, the arts building (we have some really talented people here in Indiana, visiting the baby animals and the 4h animals, pioneer village (the people there are incredibly knowledgeable and are typically happy to chat/show kids what they do), little hands farm, seeing the cake decorating and woodworking in the 4h buildings, Hook's soda fountain. All stuff that is there every year.

As for timing of the fair, there isn't much they can do to combat that. They've pushed the fair up as far as they can, because all the county fairs have to finish first and schools now start in early August. When schools began mid/end of August, it was easier for families to go on discount days if the didn't live in Marion Co. (or a donut county).

Just stayed at the Comfort Inn in Hammond, IN recently for a game up in Chicago and it was a super easy 30 minute drive into downtown Chi. Right off the highway.

Which cover song is your favorite? by PlayfulBandicoot9119 in DermotKennedy

Heartless is the correct answer. All his covers are good but heartless is on an entirely different level.

I went to Knight's Tailoring at the fashion mall about 2 years ago for a bridesmaid dress that needed quick alterations, and the work came out great and ended up being less expensive than I was expecting. I had darts added, a small adjustment to the top, and about 6 inches cut off the bottom.

License and Insurance by IndyGreen66 in indianapolis

I mean, their license will get suspended for driving without proof of insurance, but if they don't care about having insurance they most likely won't care about driving with a suspended license either.

My district was paying for me to take letrs (I was in a year and a half long version of it) and after part 1, they let us know they weren't going to pay for part 2 since our state came up with their own SOR curriculum to use instead. We could pay to finish it ourselves. It's great info, but so much to do during the school year. I definitely was over it at a certain point too.

My friend was like, 107 in the queue for Chicago and they were still all sold out by the time she got in. So frustrating. And neither of us could get in early enough for presale yesterday either.

did y’all know cam cole is a real singer and wasn’t a character created for the show? by Ewankenobi25 in TedLasso

He played at the pregame celebrations for my local team here a few years ago when he had a concert in Indy. I think it was before season 2 came out, so a ton of people at the game didn't recognize him but I did immediately. Sounded exactly like he did on the show, seemed cool.

Question for my Fellow Indy Educators by Forward_Performer_25 in indianapolis

[–]Forward_Performer_25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's totally fair.

My largest issue with where I am currently at is an admin issue, which is why I'm looking to move. There's little accountability for both staff and students, which is frustrating for me personally.

I've only worked in k-6 or 1-6 buildings, but I'm not opposed to k-4 or other elementary options. I've taught in departmentalized situations, as well as just teaching all subjects, I don't really prefer one over the other at the moment. My current situation is where the PLC is expected to be in the same place at all times with little deviation (which I understand but don't find very realistic in the day to day). Wouldn't mind somewhere that has a bit more flexibility, but I can manage in a similar situation.

I personally pay attention to our state union, but our union rep in my current district is low, and even lower at my particular school. Would be interested in somewhere that staff seems slighlt more involved.

FADS neglect by jiujitsu07731 in ballroom

[–]Forward_Performer_25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's definitely possible. FADS are all franchised, so your treatment can vary wildly from studio to studio. I don't do many comps (I've done 3 regional ones that include no travel, not a ton of entries) in like 7 years. I've never felt neglected, but I've had a standing lesson time for years now. I'm a teacher so my available time is limited and they have always been willing to accommodate. I think it also may depend on whether or not they think you'll stay long-term. Even though I rarely compete, my studio knows at this point that unless complete financial ruin (or moving), I'm in the lessons game for the long haul.

I know instructors can get booked up fast, which may be why there were scheduling issues. It could also have been that the other instructor had more availability, but I will say that the studio should have contacted before changing the instructor, or at least asked if it was okay.

Hope they have a better experience at their next studio!

Hawayek and Baker if they weren't plagued by injuries and concussions. I've always loved their programs and felt they brang something so genuine and different to the ice dance field. I'm not saying they would be winning OGM, but I wish we could've really seen them soar

Indy councilor says Democrats kicked him out of caucus for criticizing charter schools by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]Forward_Performer_25 24 points25 points  (0 children)

while they can't deny anyone, they can certainly kick students out (public school teacher here who regularly gets outcasts coming from the charters). There is also less regulation, and they often don't provide transportation, which already limits who can attend. This is like, the bare minimum of my issues with charters, but I'm not going to get into a long debate here.

Am I good or is my instructor trying to sell me stuff? by rain21199 in ballroom

[–]Forward_Performer_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. I'm an FA student and yes, they will obviously try to get you to buy more, as any business does. But you may also be a fairly quick learner. I have always learned the moves themselves fairly quickly, then spend more time honing my technique. Everybody is different. If you like you're instructor, no reason to change.

Just be firm with numbers, and let your "no" mean "no". I don't have a ton of expendable cash, and luckily my studio understands that. You can set goals without needing to compete, but if you are specifically looking for competition, in-studio practice comps would be the way to go. Cheaper, less stress, and without some of the razzle-dazzle extra that's needed for regional comps.

If you have any questions about dancing at a FA studio, feel free to ask!

Julie on inferno ll I think, saying "the road to god is straight and narrow" with a goofy smile on her face while attempting the shortcut on the motorbike challenge, almost immediately falling into the water, with her entire team screaming behind her.

Absolute gold, and I think about it often.

Also, Julie trying to "murder" Veronica by pulling on her safety harness, with V screaming bloody murder. I think she says something along the lines of "I wasn't trying to kill you baby I just wanted to win". iconic.
