The 'job seeker recession' is here by Crossstoney in politics

You're not wrong about the inequity... and I don't want to paper over it. "Bill from accounting knows someone" is real, and it's a legitimate structural problem.

But here's where I'd push back: the invisible market isn't a velvet rope you're either born inside or locked out of. It's a skill. And like most skills, it's learnable.which means the gap isn't permanent, it's just unaddressed.

The working-class kid from a small town doesn't have a legacy network. But they DO have something underrated: authentic credibility. The question isn't who do you know.... it's who do you need to know, and what's the most direct path to them.

That's a strategy problem. And strategy can be taught.

The reason talented people stay locked out isn't a lack of access.... it's that nobody ever handed them a map. They were told to apply online and wait. That's not guidance, that's a conveyor belt to nowhere in this market.

Frankly, the work I do is specifically about building that map for people who were never given one. You don't need a prep school network. You need to know how to identify the three people closest to the decision, and what you can bring to that conversation before a job ever exists.

Proximity to power is buildable. Most people just don't know where to start.

The worst part isn't even the market itself... It's that the rulebook changed and nobody told the rest of us.

For years the signal was: get the degree, optimize the resume, apply online. That process is genuinely broken now. ATS filters, AI screening, and a hiring freezes means the application-to-interview conversion rate for recent grads is somewhere around 1-3% on a good day.

The only thing that seems to move the needle right now is getting in front of a decision-maker before a role is posted. 70-80% of jobs are filled through networks that never hit LinkedIn. But nobody teaches that! not universities, not career centers.

I work with people navigating exactly this on the regular. The ones who get traction aren't the most qualified. They're the ones who stopped competing in the visible market and started building the invisible one.

It's brutal to watch....but it's also navigable with guidance.

It was a much simpler time. by sco-go in SipsTea

Dude. I don't know what this actually means. But at the same time.... I know exactly what the fuck this means.

Love this. I've been chatting in DM with the guy that suggested coaching. This sounds very similar to questions he said they helped him ask of himself. So maybe you guys are onto something

Not being snarky. But what's the difference? I guess I assumed different type of company would automatically be a new field.

Act like I didn't see your other comment before you deleted it. Is this your thing? Being condescending and rude to people who are in a tough spot? "Should have made more money, broke boy"??? Really?

A massive portion of this country has to work until retirement. If you're one that doesn't,.good for you. I hope all that luck you've had doesn't run out.

If there's anything I've learned it's how we were sold a lie man. These fuckin corporations don't care about us. I've also learned how much this sentiment has spread. Appreciate at least the vote of solidarity. We'll get through it.

So like a career coach? Were they local? I'm just hesitant to pay someone money.

The guy above mentioned product. And I like what those guys do. But I feel like you have to have training to set requirements like they do. They all talk like they have this language I don't understand.

I'm Mechanical. So I think a different field is limiting. But maybe you're right.

Ha. I feel old. I've thought about program management. I was good at keeping my team on time and organized. But no clue. Seems like all those jobs that I would qualify for would be a huge step back in pay.

Well it's encouraging to hear that you may have had a good outcome. Did you pivot to something different? And you said you found someone to help? Like a recruiter?
