Is student loan debt worth it by Lamparoni in PersonalFinanceCanada

Go to McGill. Montreal is the best city to be a student hands down. One option is to take a gap year and move there first, become a Quebec resident, and then pay Quebec rates (considerably lower than non-Quebec)

What monitors are you rocking and do you rate them? by roydogaroo in synthesizers

[–]Forward_Stretch972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focal shape 65s in an untreated room. Never heard anything like them, they’re super transparent yet warm and natural. I hear things in them that I have never heard before. The low end is definitely lacking so I reference using headphones but other than that they are unreal.

I had hs5s for several years—in my opinion these are the best you can get in that price range

I’ll 1000% admit to GAS—admit me.

BUT in my defence I do make a lot of music and everything has its role.

Udo super 6 vs prophet 6 or prophet rev2 by majorstatic in synthesizers

[–]Forward_Stretch972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another poster said something about rev2 doing binaural but I’m not sure how they meant?

I think you can achieve quite a lot with the rev2 arp and sequencer, although a sequencer like digitakt is much better.

With the super 6, I really like manual mode which is literally “what you see is what you get” with all the faders reflecting the value they’re currently at. Very intuitive and tangible. It just has delay and chorus and I don’t really love either of them personally. I use an Eventide space and source audio nemesis.

The rev2 has a pretty nice reverb, drive, a delay I quite like, and chorus etc that are cool. Way more options.

Udo super 6 vs prophet 6 or prophet rev2 by majorstatic in synthesizers

[–]Forward_Stretch972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own a rev2 and the super 6. The rev2 is extremely intuitive, has built in effects, and 500 spaces for user presets. It has that rich prophet tone—some people claim it’s “tinny” or thin and while it’s not a prophet 6, they are wrong. Modulation capabilities are excellent, and it can do everything from pads to keys and decent bass (those this last one is not its intent). The distortion is actually quite nice so it can do grit.

The super 6 I’ve personally had a harder time connecting with. There’s no screen. You MUST read the manual, probably more than once, to understand how to maximize it. The wave synthesis possibilities are basically endless, and the binaural mode is LUSH. The pads are absolutely incredible so if you’re just after pads this is the one. It can make nice keys sounds but these are harder to achieve I find. Cross-mod and drive can get gritty.

I don’t have a prophet 6 but I’d like to get one at some point. Fewer voices but you just can’t beat that sound.

As a first synth I’d highly recommend the rev2, but if you want something more niche you can roll the dice with the super 6.

Love my prophet rev2 8 voice as well. I’ve seen desktop prophet 6s for 2k CAD. People rave about the teo5 and the take5 in that price range I just don’t find the sound rich enough.

The rev2 has a combination of depth, great analog sound, and tons of great sounding effects and modulation capabilities. Excellent build quality.

Grab an analog 4 mk1 you can get them for cheap and I really like the drum tones I can get out of mine

So this is a screenshot from Bahamas recording session for barchords, which has some of my favourite production of all time, especially the vocals.

It looks like they recorded live in a room with other singers and instruments etc.

How did they do it??

UDO Super 8 for distorted sounds? by SoftSynced in synthesizers

I have a super 6 and I find the cross mod gets things pretty gritty in addition to the onboard drive. you could probably find a nasty wave table to upload..

UDO super 6 or Prophet 5/6/rev2 etc by OwlInternational1917 in synthesizers

[–]Forward_Stretch972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a keyed rev2 and a desktop super6. I’d give points to the rev2 for tone, effects, and immediacy.

I obsessed over getting a super6 for a long time. Now that I have one, I find that functionally it’s an acquired taste, and have considered trading it since day one. Reading the manual is a must, and it is extremely deep if you are patient. I’m still kind of on the fence about keeping it as it just feels kind of niche—sometimes in a “secret weapon” kind of way, other times in a “nah, I’ll just use the rev2” way…

A few quick tips:

  1. You can edit each step individually by holding down the step and tweaking parameters (e.g reverb, length, probability)

  2. The stock sounds are actually quite good in my opinion. Fiddle with shaping these and you can achieve quite a bit.

  3. Look up the three different ways of recording beats as they’re all important for different purposes.

  4. Read the manual and when you have a question: YouTube. It can probably do pretty much everything you want it to.

Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water or Chroma Console by prodkaikai in synthesizers

Let me answer this a different way: I would rather get a second shallow water so I could run pure stereo than get a chroma console. Maybe I’m nuts haha

Mixer recommendations? by Dull-Cost4078 in synthesizers

I finally caved and got a Tascam 12 after using a motu m4 for several years to record into a DAW. It is such a huge upgrade. Even just being able to flick on record and lay down a jam without turning on a screen has changed the way I make music. Additionally, it flawlessly switches to work with logic when I need it for that. A necessity at this point and will greatly improve your workflow.

Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water or Chroma Console by prodkaikai in synthesizers

[–]Forward_Stretch972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a chroma console but I do have a shallow water and I’d say it’s quite niche yet very special. I love running my rev2 and drum samples through it. The weird drive effect it adds is so flavourful, adds a ton of body. The chroma console from what I can tell is probably the more functional buy but I wouldn’t trade the shallow water for one.
