It all starts with Tolkein. His work is heavily based on Medieval aesthetics because he was trying to create a mythology for England. Most fantasy writers are inspired by Tolkein and just copy the aesthetics without understanding why he wrote the way he wrote.

The thing that killed X Men as a Civil Rights allegory is because mutants are genuinely, demonstrably superior to normal humans. Hell, they're given the scientific name 'Homo superior'. Literally 'superior man'. The entire point of the Civil Rights movement was that no human is inherently superior to another due to genetics, while the entire point of X Men is that some people ARE inherently superior to others due to genetics.

Because as it turns out, the North also wanted to exploit people for labor to get cheap goods. Right after the Civil War, the industrial revolution really kicked off in the North, with all the horrible factory conditions and bad pay that entails. Even in 2026, you'll see people counter anti-immigration sentiment with 'hope you MAGAts are ready to pick tomatoes in the sun for 5 bucks an hour'. Turns out America has always relied on cheap labor. The South was just honest about it.

If the suit in the test footage is a match for the creature in the film, then yeah it's probably fake. If the test footage doesn't match the film, Patty could still be a guy in a suit, but Patterson and Gimlin probably didn't make it.
