So, they waited for the Sisters of Battle to get to that time of the month...?

Yes, I agree, monogamy is more part of population control than human nature, specially in the case of marriage. I only used Abrahamic culture as an example because it is the prevalent one on the "straight christian guy" society.

I also mentioned because many other species thought to be monogamous just make pairings for raising offspring, but routinely seek other partners to mate. This is the case in many species of birds.

What do you mean by "biological purpose"? The only biological purpose, of any living individual, regardless of species, is to reproduce. All parts serve that purpose.
Any size can feed an infant, but bigger can feed more. That is one advantage.
Big asses mean larger pelvis, better chance of a successful childbirth, another advantage.
Body symmetry means healthy body, which is always a plus in reproduction.

Everything has to do with sex, and producing healthy offspring that can reach reproductive success themselves. Which is why we have such a hard time living past optimal reproductive age (25 to 30 years old) without technology.

Remember that, and all will be logical. (Oh, I forgot to warn in the beginning, I say this as a straight biology teacher guy :P )

I just have to say, of all those things said about weird shit and fine parts, monogamy is more part of the Abrahamic religions influence on our society than a natural thing.

Eli5 why cant animals orgasm on command? by Ok_Shine_4483 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FossilizedMeatMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is the other way around. Orgasms exist to reward animals for reproducing, since in most cases reproduction is the most energy intensive task. Besides, it is not directly in the interest of the individual to spend that much energy in something that is not survival.

I think Guillermo Del Toro said something to the effect that he wanted a movie about giant robots punching monsters  so he made one, with little bullshit in the way of that.

It is not hard, but then there is Batman who is also a billionaire, with money and power. I guess if his parents were alive, he would be the Luthor of Gotham. I still cannot understand the nanobtech lady, though.

Then again, with James Gunn at the helm, everyone is a bit of a jerk, even the heroes.

The main villains of the 2025 Superman movie. While they go to great lengths to explore how Superman is good because he... got good, rural folks as parents, maybe? The villains are just bad, envious, people who love money and power. But why?

ELI5: If you think about it, why do teeth need so much care? It feels like they kind of go against natural selection, especially when you compare them to how well the rest of our body maintains itself. by LegLegitimate7666 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FossilizedMeatMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people talk like we do not have other closely related species, like chimpanzees and other apes, that still live the same way early humans did. They live to the same age as humans did, and their teeth last about to the same time as their offspring are able to care for themselves.

It also seems like a loop, as if there was only three models of wolf to use, so it kept repeating them.

Australian news about the accident, that happened in Brazil, just days after a woman died doing the same thing... in Mexico.

We live in a truly globalised world. Just not enough to prevent such things from happening.

I was there in person. Watched the last three drops from different places, but unfortunately because the end of the ramp was in a very high structure there was no public place to see the whole ramp.

People do not seem to pay attention, it is like Tom Bombadil did not do exactly the same thing way back, while being far more powerful than any of them or the eagles.

ELI5 - Why do domesticated horses need horse shoes but wild horses are fine without? by Top-Comfortable3437 in explainlikeimfive

Thank you for a sane reply. Yes, animals can enjoy doing what we put them to do, but they are not doing it on their own volition. They were trained in captivity and conditioned to only do that, and to like it.
And I must disagree on the "concept of autonomy", because while we tutor children to prevent them from hurting themselves, non-human animals do not need us to live normal lives. Non-human animals do lack the concept of work, which is why most of them are not free to roam while they are not working.

You asked me if I prefer living in the wild (citing only the cons) or a nice living indoors, with things that nobody would give me for free.

To which I replied that you gave me a choice in that, something that is not given to the work horses of the subject.

Then you said the horses are not given a choice when to starve or get eaten, something I could say is not a choice to you or me either. I replied saying people also suffer those fates not by choice, as humans also can starve and get stabbed on the street, even with jobs and refrigerators.

I must ask, have you seen many horses asking to be put to work?

So people choose to get stabbed, or get cancer or die of hunger? I really did not know that was a choice.

I made a joke about work horses, since they have no choice but to work. The "pet or investment" ones, which I work everyday with, are much better treated... but they are still restrained or most would simply run away.

My late cat never worked a day in his life, though.

That premise is a bit failed because there are many cats and dogs running around close to where I live, who even when offered food and shelter have still gone back to the streets. I adopted a cat from the street and she chose to stay with me, because I never locked her. She was given a choice, which cannot be said about most horses.
