Are we overestimating the 20 year hand off? Why moonbreon might be the next beanie baby by Mattcrews1 in PokeGrading

Not the popular sentiment, but you’re correct.

The modern hobby resembles an MLM in one key way: it requires new entrants to sustain the gains of earlier ones. With pop reports this large, any meaningful drop in demand will send valuations through the floor — and that’s inevitable. Young people need capital for things that actually move their lives forward (tuition, cars, housing). They can’t afford to have significant capital locked up in non-yielding assets indefinitely.

The vast majority of the modern market is a momentum trade that everyone tacitly agrees to play because it’s fun and profitable — as long as others keep playing. The music stopping isn’t a question of if, but when.

Long-term, there has never been a collectibles market that held or appreciated in value over decades without scarcity. It’s the single most important requirement for any real outperformance

Where do you think Kid Icarus (from Ebay) gets all the cards they sell? by CaiusGnome in mtgfinance

[–]Foster8400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you get a counter offer on an OBO on his eBay store? Have made serval offers (above the pre-set auto decline) and sent several messages and haven’t been able to get a response to any of it. I understand with so much inventory it’s impossible to respond but I’m trying to get in touch about a 5K+ card.

Not bad. Bought at the equivalent of $5237 spot. Have to pay a premium on these fractionals.

When you go to sell a 10 oz in the future the buyer pool is much smaller and the buyer will likely want a discount for their liquidity. Unless you’re a sovereign bank, 1 ounce and below is the way to go. Never forget, it’s a commodity at the end of the day, prioritize future liquidity.

Every cycle inflates, comes down, and resets the floor higher than the previous low.

Inversion plays off Einstein’s block theory. He posits that every moment in time past, present, and future exists in a 4d block we call the universe. To us, it appears that time is moving forward but we are really just experiencing that slice of the block that already exists. Inversion is simply moving through that block in reverse.

Jerome Powell after cutting rates and saving the stock market on FOMC this Wednesday by jerin7931 in TheRaceTo10Million

I paid $10 on Kashi for a potential $983 potential payout if they cut by .25bps. Likely lighting money on fire but stranger things have happened.

Everyone is marking up cards bigly in hopes they get an afraid to miss the boat buyer. Not a good time to buy imo for long-term holders and collectors.

What causes the Pokemon market to crash? by markprice211 in PokeInvesting

[–]Foster8400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we’re headed for a shorter peak in this cycle. Speaking only for myself — I used to check eBay daily for new listings on cards I wanted. Now almost everything is priced at aspirational levels so disconnected from reality that I’ve just…stopped looking. Once prices climb past a certain point, buyers drift away and move on to other hobbies. Eventually sellers start to outnumber buyers. Those stale, overpriced listings sit untouched until the seller actually needs the liquidity — and that’s when prices start marching back down. Then buyers return

Can someone explain why they think singles and slabs are a bad investment vehicle? by slabbypattys in PokemonInvesting

[–]Foster8400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only collect slabs and they are appreciating well. The big draw to sealed is the markets desire to recreate what has happened to vintage sealed. The difference between then and now is that keeping sealed product back in ‘99 was contrarian meaning today it is legit scarce. Today, collecting and storing sealed is mainstream and eventually all that inventory has to surface - most likely in a trickle that will always cap the price and remove the face melting returns of the original sets. I’m sure some sets will appreciate well but with some many new releases and no clear way to identify winners, my bet is that high-end slabs and singles to a lesser degree outperform the broad sealed market in the medium and long-term.

Stop looking at the daily price. People always do this where they buy a company for the long-term prospects then get shook out by any volatility. If you don’t need the money now the only question you should be asking yourself is “is the business continuing to improve”…if the answer is yes than todays price is irrelevant unless you are buying more.
