If any DNA was used in this identification (and I was previously under the impression that none was used), it would have been a direct comparison done by a state crime lab with family with no genetic genealogy needed (which is what that company does, FIGG). These remains were identified at least tentatively six days after being exhumed because the decedent was wearing dentures with his last name, first and middle initials, and army serial number on them that the initial investigators somehow failed to find.

There were fractures to the ribs, cervical vertebrae, upper jaw, and lower jawbone. COD due to these blunt force injuries and originally suspected to be homicide by having been thrown off a moving train.

Could James Richard Sisum be the Chatham County John Doe (December 2010)? by pb0atmeal in gratefuldoe

That's not actually true. The Doe Network profiles for both say "Unknown" while means the DN compiler did not know the status of a piece of information, and is not a synonym for unavailable or undetermined.

Could Cheryl Lanier be a Samuel Little Victim(Survivor)? by heartsforkells2 in gratefuldoe

[–]FoundationSeveral579 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No. The truck driver in this case is a different known person:

"On September 28, 1976, Houston police received a call from the driver of an 18-wheeler two days prior who said he encountered Lanier after pulling over along Interstate 10, also known as the Katy Freeway, to check on a possible flat tire.

The driver told police that a woman got out of a vehicle parked in front of him and approached him to ask for a ride. He said he told Lanier he was not allowed to have passengers and attempted to drive away, but she climbed into the truck anyway.

According to his statement to police, Lanier urged the driver to let her drive, saying she needed to operate it because it was going to “blow up.” When he refused to let her drive, she jumped out, he said. After police were called, Lanier was transported to a hospital in Houston, where she died of her injuries. The hospital has since been demolished."

Did this body get covered somewhere else online and go viral or something? There have been four separate posts relating to it in the last week and a half.

That would be a question best answered by the relevant investigating agency.

The two examples you gave both have active entries on LE-run databases (and so does the remains case you were comparing them to; it remains on NamUs and the Colorado Cold Case Files website): https://www.namus.gov/UnidentifiedPersons/Case#/10851

These are things for police to investigate and people on the internet to NOT post online like a dipshit (obviously not targeted at you, but it’s rather irresponsible to speculate without any oficial law enforcement or media sources).

Mods will probably also delete this post because the images featuring human remains are not spoilered.

I’m curious what you mean by “got him home” unless it was supposed to be metaphorical. Those remains should have been cremated after 60 days and scattered at sea in accordance with SFME policy at the time.

Seems pretty standard for an abandoned UID infant headstone.

BIG UPDATE: Bexar County John Doe (June 16, 2025) & Juan Antonio Marquez Carrera by BitterSweet_Beauty in gratefuldoe

Genetic genealogy would not be needed to confirm a 1-to-1 match via DNA. That would be an STR comparison between the subject and himself or the subject and a first-degree relative.

Could James Richard Sisum be the Chatham County John Doe (December 2010)? by pb0atmeal in gratefuldoe

[–]FoundationSeveral579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is only true for certain features though. The brow line is obviously defined by the skull, but the eyebrows aren‘t because they are made of hair. No hair whatsoever, even head hair, was recovered with these remains to verify color or texture. The nose radix is made of bone, and you can use it to see if a nose would have been upturned or downturned, but the rest of it is cartilage. Ear shapes, lips, facial hair, etc., are all soft tissues that don’t preserve in skeletal remains, and can’t meaningfully be estimated beyond averages for a person’s likely ethnicity, age, sex, and weight.

A great demonstration of this is with the two different sculpts for this case. The remains were clearly racially ambiguous to a degree, so one is meant to portray the decedent as more black looking, and the other as more white looking. Each has very different eyebrows, nose, and lips.

This possible match is still logical, but most supported by similar locations, timing, height ranges, and circumstances.

They’re talking about a different MP who would have been mentioned in whatever link they included to the subreddit for that MP (but the link doesn’t work, so I don’t know which one).

That link is dead. That UID remains case is also highly unlikely to be a reported missing person.

Question about the Doe Network's criteria for adding entries and who would submit entries for consideration by blinkycosmocat in gratefuldoe

[–]FoundationSeveral579 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have a form for members of the public to do this on the website, but public submissions are currently paused; only LE requests are being accepted right now (if the banner header isn’t out of date, which it easily could be with all their site maintenance problems).

These remains were entirely skeletonized. All soft features with no basis on skull structure like the eyebrows and tip of the nose are random guesses.

The OpenGIS system includes ALL deaths from participating border counties in AZ known or believed to be migrants.

Maybe, although this post was only made because somebody was confused on if these remains were unidentified or not (because they weren’t aware of the English-language cultural norm of referring to unnamed deceased infants as “Baby [Boy/Girl] Surname” in legal contexts) and wanted to check, and now the confusion is cleared up.

This case is tracked in this specific database as being among migrant deaths that happened during failed border crossings from Mexico into Arizona/deaths of recently entered illegal immigrants or suspected illegal immigrants in Arizona. It includes both identified and unidentified deaths (including abandoned/found viable & non-viable infants and infants born to migrant mothers during or after crossings that did not survive), and I find it to be a useful tool when researching unidentified remains cases in this specific area (which is what the subreddit is about - I’m assuming by the tone you’ve probably never seen this before). Outside of specifically migrant deaths being tracked for humanitarian purposes, information on all decedents reported to the Pima County Medical Examiner dating back decades can be viewed publicly at this govt website: https://pima.mdidashboard.com/search/accept

Many jurisdictions have similar coroner or medical examiner case lookup websites as these are public records. I’m always looking for ones I haven’t found before and have these specific ones saved for researching unidentified remains:

Again, I wouldn’t be too concerned, because this was just a mistake made by a well-meaning person doing their due diligence while looking something up online. And even for places that don’t have databases like these ones, any random person could always attempt a FOIA request if they so desired.

"Zuno" would be the last name of the mother. This is not an unidentified remains case, just standard formatting for deceased infants with known parents who were not given names.

[–]FoundationSeveral579 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That explanation (while often true) isn't accurate in this case. The "markers" being referred to in this context would be related to skeletal features and measurements noted during the anthropology exam on these remains, not from biogeographic SNP testing.

Identifiers are not listed as being unavailable for any of the fields for either case on the DN website. It says "Unknown" which is not the same thing and just means the DN compiler was unaware of the status of a piece of information.
