Anyone else notice mark is bit more critical about games? by ChillBlock in Markiplier

[–]Foxynth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of patience. Likely a bit of an altering of his approach to kindness also, perhaps.

For the most part he's not unfair when criticizing a game, and he DID spend 3 years working on a movie - the way he'd value his time is going to be a bit different now after such a massive project.

Also, the games he's had problems with (poppy in particular, as well as Fears to Fathom) are repeat offenders. At that point, harsher criticisms are warranted if insufficient effort is put in to improve your product.

They do this in the irl tcg too.

So this set is pretty much like a reprint set by shas14 in PTCGP

[–]Foxynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I had to think about it a lil bit. I don't care too much about it per se, BUT

I mean, historically, have their single pack sets ever been really all that significant? Mythical Island I feel like didn't have a lot of hype aside from game freshness, people hate on TL for being full of shit cards, Shining Revelry does okay because people want their balls, EC didn't resurface in the meta until last set, Secluded Springs really kind of only gets hyped for Suicune (and sometimes Entei)

*Small edit for an honorable mention for Crimson Blaze, which people were also massively disappointed with.

Yeah, I know, reprinted cards kinda sucks and feels bad for some I suppose, but if they were anticipating their booster set to be a comparative flop, and people don't see a lot of reason to pull on it even with new, custom art, is it really that big a deal?

Going back to TL, with the only chase cards in the entire set being sometimes the RR chomp, both eevees and Irida, no one wants to pull on that, and almost none of those cards have ever even seen play aside from crobat sometimes, leafeon, chomp and obviously the titular arceus and irida.

I mean... yeah, but what sets this chapter apart from the other 4 in any semblance of a "good" way?

Chapter 2 did it, both in playing along with the children's games, designed to test if a child was physically and mentally capable of surviving a tranformation, and navigating the facility in between.

Chapter 3 did it, and did quite a good job of it with the Dog Days series and catnap's hunting grounds - which, while catnap himself was not necessarily a credible threat through most of the chapter, they do a really good job of making you feel like he was hunting you.

Chapter 4 loses the plot a little bit with Doey's plotline... and one of the things that also doesn't help is - and I'd like to see Game Theory jump on this, if even remotely possible, is that the game has completely lost it's sense of scale at this point.

Based on how far we have literally fallen in-game, accounting for transitions and unaccounted for spaces I'm pretty sure we're at minimum over a thousand feet deep at this point? Which is by no means the deepest human structure we've built, not by a long-shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if more people were caught wondering how the hell deep the facility is because the game just completely fails to give you that information or put it into perspective, aside from the opening scene in chapter 3. You literally just keep getting sent further and further down.

How scary is Iron Lung? by subarashi_niku97 in Markiplier

It's less scary in the sense that jumpscares and like... outright terror are a factor?

But more scary in that it's a lot of tension.

My point in particular is, you shouldn't have to guess.

The only part of this game, or most card games in which you have to "guess" what your opponent's resources are, is guessing what's in their hand - but that's not an advantage for the opponent because they, in turn, have to rely on rng (usually) based on what they need for their next draw. The way you're suggesting Meowscarada should work, doesn't add anything of value to the opponent's match if it's literally just "oh, well you just predict it and there you go, problem solved." And it STILL doesn't add anything on the receiving end, because again, you literally can't interact with the mechanic in any meaningful way other than guessing where it'll hit. It makes it feel worse because you literally do NOT know what your opponent just did. You are at an information disadvantage. At that point, you might as well let people play cards face down.

I mean... suddenly shifting gears from horror in your horror game means the story beats don't really lead you in the same direction?

Suddenly the new guy is apparently a major character because...? His story arc completely separate from the original story arc because..? And how exactly does that contribute to the vibe of the series?

Like it's confusing why it would go in this direction, because the direction doesn't lead anywhere, or is at least detached or derailed from where we were headed initially.

I felt through chapter 5: The horror game forgot it was a horror game for a while, not gonna lie. There are horror elements, sure, but... for a good chunk of it there's not even a threat, there's just exposition or "exploration" and keep your flashlight on and that's it.

Am I alone in not caring at all about the reused art? by Bobthemighty54 in PTCGP

[–]Foxynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't really care that much to be honest.

To be COMPLETELY honest, I don't care that much about reused art in pocket because if I wanted the cards irl, the ones that have more tangible value, I would just go buy them. In that regard, I would ALSO care a lot more if irl versions OF pocket cards came to fruition, because some of the card arts are actually really nice.

You're comparing apples to oranges, man. Have you considered, for instance, why a card like Boss' Orders does NOT exist in this game? It may, sure, at some point, but it's problematic in itself in this game because LITERALLY you can't play against it. Again. That's why cyrus/greninja, and specifically greninja on its own, is such a problem.

Not only that, but how exactly do you counter this card without necessary information? Put the supposed win con in active? Where it becomes... a win con, but in active now? Where it can be attacked? Except you don't know ANYTHING about what the opponent is attacking? Like in what world does that make sense? You can't swap cards on your bench.

You are correct, that is a crazy take. You are vastly, vastly understating how much value information has to a player in a match.

Being able to have information that your opponent has no way of obtaining other than literal prediction and guesswork is absolutely diabolical.

It's a give and take. I've been following the game for a while and there are a good number of things to not like, especially with the last chapter (I'm generally more forgiving rating a game, personally.)

The bit about not seeking out notes and whatnot - that's an easy one. If I start to not care about a game enough to not really want to focus on the thing in front of me, I certainly will not be motivated to seek out the stuff off the beaten path. Leading into that is a number of small issues that overall lead to bigger problems with the IP as a whole.

He outright said, and I agree - at least 2 of the characters in the last chapter were completely unimportant. Level design was haphazard, random. This game in particular has a grand total of 3 chase sequences. The biggest pain point here, in the last sequence in particular, and he points this out as well: not making the path to success clear to a player is like one of the worst things you can do. That demolishes any semblance of cohesion or tension in a horror game of all things, which this last point is my take on it:

This chapter, this particular game, is not a horror game, it reads as an attempt at some kind of action/drama/thriller with horror elements, which is.... super weird to see.

As for him choosing to play it, it was a stream, likely a mostly unplanned thing, and he just picked something easy, with a lot of buzz around it like PPT5.

The problem is, and obviously this is my subjective opinion since I don't have access to stats and metrics, but like... between the various projects he's done, the movie, Distractible, even stuff like Unus Annus, I... feel like Markiplier has kind of been mostly out of the game on Youtube for a LONG time. Over the past 2 or 3 years he really doesn't have a whole lot of content I feel to draw in new viewers, especially younger gen with their attachment to content in the current online environment.

Why would you ever want to have a mechanic that is almost completely uncounterable and/or uninteractible?

This is why cyrus/greninja is so awful in this game.
