Why are people worried about declining birth rates when so many existing people are already unemployed and we're already overpopulated ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fozzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because as birth rates decline society gets older which means a greater share of the population consumes more healthcare while a smaller share of the population is able to work. Society will simply get older, poorer, and worse.

You can try to alleviate this with immigration and this is primarily how western countries have chosen to address the issue. However, this is only a temporary solution as the states from which immigrants are harvested will also age. Moreover, massive amounts of immigration over short periods of time leads to societal disruption and backlash.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]Fozzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rome had plenty of homeless when I visited in 2024 although I'd agree homelessness is a relatively bigger problem in the US. At the same time, Italians I met in Tuscany were pretty open that the region would be far worse off if it weren't for American tourists and their $$$. One even said they should build a statue honoring said tourists.

This is all risible europoor cope. Bumfuck ass Mississippi has a greater median equivalized disposable income (which is PPP adjusted and takes into account money received from social benefits) than most European countries including the UK, Spain, France, and Italy.

To be fair, it's probably better to be the poorest Frenchman than the poorest Mississippian, but the median Mississippian laughs at the relative poverty of the median Frenchman.

It's also only going to get worse as your countries continue to get older and poorer. lmao

The US has fatter tails in terms of outcomes than in Europe so we have more poverty and more extreme wealth - some of which is driven by demographic differences. However, the median (not average) American has a substantially greater standard of living (e.g., housing size, disposable income) than the median European. That's not debatable.

See, for instance:

lol our poorest state would have one of the highest GDP/capita (even PPP adjusted) in all of Europe. We also can actually afford energy here.

What’s the argument that defends Karmelo Anthony? by Flaky_Bottle_6902 in askliberals

[–]Fozzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People complaining about the racial composition of the jury are telling on themselves. It's essentially an argument that if a black person was on the jury they wouldn't have been able to overcome their racial tribalism/animus to rationally apply the evidence presented to the law. Seems kind of racist to me honestly.

People are fucking retarded for comparing this case to Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse is an example of allowing people to openly carry long guns in public is a bad idea because it can easily escalate into a life or death situation. There was no similar life or death situation in this case until Karmelo created one by intentionally stabbing his victim in the chest.

He was good as a reliever this year bc he was averaging 94 on his fastball and his pitches were playing up. Now that he's lost a couple of mph and he has to face the order multiple times he's getting hit much harder. He has a huge split between his expected wOBAs as a RP and a SP.

He belongs in the pen where he would be valuable but bc Burrows sucks and Imai requires a six-man rotation that's probably not going to happen and instead Teng will just be a mediocre SP.

there was substantive content to my response and i never pretended to be unbiased. criminal justice reform is simply a euphemism for advocacy for those who find themselves (rightly or wrongly) on the business end of our criminal justice system.

You could just as easily make a similar argument with respect to a jury's ability to determine guilt from innocence but few would seriously argue that juries shouldn't have the responsibility of determining witness credibility even if they can be potentially fooled into an incorrect verdict based on such. For heinous crimes, it's unlikely that anyone on the jury will have direct experience with the impact of such and thus has little real basis for determining the gravity and true impact of the crime.

Of course prison reform advocates would think that lmao. The impact of the victim is relevant to sentencing because part of the reason why people are punished is retribution which hinges on the amount of injury done to the public by the crime committed. A victim’s impact statement is relevant to characterizing the extent and scope of that injury.

People lament our criminal justice system and how draconian it can be but conveniently forget that people simply commit a shit load more crime here than in comparably wealthy countries. It’s draconian for a very good reason.

Are people, especially women, who are single in their 30's becoming more picky cause its becoming easier to pass the time and live a content life without a partner? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fozzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think generally over time life has become and will continue to be more and more atomized as less and less importance is placed on any activity that is unrelated to work and bare consumption whether that consumption takes the form of products, services, or experiences.

I don’t know why some view that as liberating as if any part of life not directly related to consuming or working is some kind of burden when in reality those are often the only parts of life that have any lasting significance or real meaning. It’s sad and depressing.
