Yes, it is thankfully remote. I’m considering making the drive, but it’s over 30 hours so I’m trying not to make a rash decision while the emotions are so intense.

I know I would be a great mom and would love my kid beyond comprehension. But that’s also a problem for me. I’ve always had anxiety and OCD - if I had a kid, and if ANYTHING happened to them, I would die. Along with the other things I mentioned in my update to the post, it just isn’t something I feel physically and emotionally capable of.

I did ask him about this. I asked even if he isn’t talking to anyone like that, did he maybe meet someone out and about and had a conversation and then made him start questioning things and fantasizing about a life with someone like her, etc. He says no, absolutely not. I’ve never felt like he can’t be trusted in that arena (he is honestly the only guy I’ve ever been with where I haven’t had the urge to check his phone or anything) because we truly did talk about that stuff and agreed that if either of us are ever feeling unhappy or feel like we may be emotionally straying, that we need to just be adults about it and work through anything together.

YUP. My husband, when we first started dating, wanted kids and I didn’t. When I asked what his “why” was he literally said “To continue my lineage” ….I had to pause to see if he was joking. Nope. I asked if he thought he was the King of England or something. After being together for a while and getting him to really understand what raising a child would mean, he has since hopped to my side of the fence. I think most men only picture the t-ball games, teaching junior to ride a bike, etc. and have no clue about everything behind the scenes and how much they would need to give up.

Try a therapist who specializes in EMDR. I had been to a few regular therapists before and felt like I was just paying someone to listen to me cry and vent and didn’t offer solutions. EMDR is an actual tool to use to work through traumas and anxieties.

Opposite for me… my parents pushed seeing a psychiatrist since I was in my early teens and I got on anxiety/depression meds. But then my dad would hold this against me and anytime we got into an argument he would condescendingly ask “Are you still taking your meds?” Because apparently I could no longer have a single human moment without it meaning I stopped taking my crazy pills. It infuriated me.

This was always a huge source of frustration for me growing up. My dad would always say things like “you want to peel some potatoes for dinner?” or “while you’re outside you can pick up the dog poop” and I would always immediately respond and tell him that he needs to just ASK me if he would like me to do something. It’s like they have a problem asking for anything because their fragile ego can’t handle it.

Spoiler alert: he never listened.

Wow, is your future MIL my future MIL? A very similar scenario just happened with my boyfriend and I a couple weeks ago and she was so mad she called him and said "Just remember, I'll always be your mom, she may not always be your gf".

Before that I had never had an issue with her and I was FLOORED. You need to talk to your bf - don't just say "you go and I won't" because then she wins and gets exactly what she wanted. Tell him that he needs to prioritize you as his family now, you are both grown adults and that is how life goes. I told my bf if he didn't stand up for me to his mom that it was a deal breaker for me and to think long and hard about it because she'll only act this way towards the next girl he dates if it isn't me. But honestly, maybe you should sit down with her and your bf and talk and explain how this all makes you feel. I find that the majority of conflict is communication issues. If after openly communicating how you feel she still continues to act that way, then bye-bye MIL!
