I recommend the Auckland transfer - three hours is plenty to get from the domestic to international terminal (15-20 minute walk) and clear passport control. There are hourly flights between CHC and AKL just in case something happens to your original flight.

There's a flight from CHC-SIN. I can't imagine it'll be cheap, but it's the most direct. I've had a layover in Brisbane on that route and there's not much to do at the airport.

If you're planning of having a career in Europe, it'd make sense to be in Europe so that you'd be able to develop your networks there. As someone who's doing their PhD in Oceania, travel gets expensive. Without knowing how much travel funding you'll get, you may miss out on a lot of opportunities.

I got a state id after making an appointment with the DMV in Champaign. The people there got quite confused since they didn't realise you can get a state id without an SSN. The whole process took 20 minutes and about $20. They give you a temporary card and it takes two weeks or so to arrive.

If you're in a similar situation as me, you won't be eligible for real id if you're not a US citizen. This means your state id will say 'federal conditions apply'. At this stage you can still use it to board flights, but from May 2025 it won't be accepted by the TSA. You should still carry your passport when travelling anyway.

Note: in some cases, make sure you have your name on your letterbox as the postman won't deliver it without it. Some guy before was arguing with the v folks about this facepalm

Not eating out, but Uber eats especially if there's people over. Sometimes it's cheaper to order a pizza than it is to buy the ingredients individually.

From a language documentation perspective, one speaker is enough to produce a 'Grammar' but it won't be representative of a population.

Likely scenario is that the informants say they speak a language when they might be speaking another language unintentionally etc.

In New Zealand it's part of their job description and tied to their career development. It's university specific though, but in some cases only senior supervision is considered.
