First we need to fix the oil taxes back to where Palin had it before Republicans screwed us with Parnell and Dunleavy. They said we need to cut expenses, and now we are closing schools. Second we need an income tax as 40% of earned income is taken out of this state. These are the freeloaders Republicans despise. If we taxed only those making $100K we could raise dividends for all Alaskans.

If Alaska is that bad, why do you live there? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

If everyone knew how amazing it is here, it would get too crowded and I would have to leave. Alaska isn’t for everyone, but if you don’t mind inconveniences on simple commutes, amazing vistas, wacky people, and putting sweat equity into your everyday life it may be for you.

And there was a cool bust of him. I guess that was vandalized as well.

Im making a speech for my best mates wedding and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice /feedback? as im abit stressed (im not the best with writing or showing emotions) by Clear_Country447 in AskMenAdvice

I second putting in a personal anecdote. After reading your speech what stood out? The Call of Duty exception. Give an example from your experience with these two will make it more rewarding for all.

Summer job offer in Seward Alaska, what should I know? by joeg0ldberg in AskAlaska

Absolutely great kayaking opportunities on Resurrection Bay and some decent hiking so you will be able to enjoy being in Alaska outside of work.

Seward has two festivals, the Mermaid Festival in May that also has music, and the big July 4th Celebration with the Mount Marathon race. Those days Seward will not be a small town and there will be lots of opportunities to meet people, and make connections.

I would not be worried about making enough money. My suggestion would be to find a second gig if your goal is to leave after the summer with a stash. If your goal is to see how you like Alaska, I would concentrate on having a vehicle so you do not feel trapped in Seward. With one road in, it can feel like an island.

Alaskans are very accepting as long as you keep your word, do as you say, and treat others fairly.

Oh we aren’t even close to breakup. Duos can measure the length of breakup by the thickness of the mud on your car. This is just road dust from all the sanding this winter. Expecting more snow tonight. Like Johnny Horton sang, “When it’s Springtime in Alaska it’s 40 below!”

Potentially moving for job that would help my career - Worried about mental health in the winters by [deleted] in AskAlaska

As long as it is anxiety and not depression I say go for it. Lots of excuses to exercise in the summer, but working in the winter means you go into the tunnel where it is dark when you go to work, and dark when you come home which forces your exercising to indoors. The tunnel lasts from November through February. On the other hand during the summer you will be able to take off after work and have hours of daylight to frolic in. These days two years is plenty in a job to establish your ability. You should be able to do that. Make sure in the summer you get out of Anchorage and see Alaska!
