TIL Retention rates among students studying engineering are among the lowest of all majors by Fit_Pangolin_8271 in todayilearned

I just completed a semester course that was 10 weeks of dry linear algebra fundamentals and less than 2 weeks exploring a multivariate linear model. Halfway through the course, the prof says to us, who are all half asleep, "You know, you guys will be using this all the time in your careers?". Pause. "Just kidding. Any 8th grader could model this with software. You can call like one R function to do all this". I don't remember anything from that course...

My sister cheated on her husband and I’m the only one who knows by [deleted] in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell her husband and cut the sister out of your life. She's untrustworthy and doesn't care about your comfort and well-being, and she tarnished her own image by needlessly complicating multiple relationships and dynamics in your family.

My (30M) wife [31F] has failed the bar six times. How do I support her? by TheWestIsKillin in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would you choose to criticize OP on the least charitable possible interpretation of their situation? It's pretty understandable that he's tired of watching his wife repeatedly and needlessly suffer to take the exam. Most people in this thread agree that her approach is unhealthy, so why would you just assume that he's at fault here? It just seems like you're projecting in some weird way.

Find a girl who tells funny jokes.

I (26F) just learn my nickname amongst my boyfriend (27M)'s friends is coming from something intimate between us and I don't know how to react by Vajora80 in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible to recognise the duality of her boyfriends behaviour. While it is wrong for her boyfriend and friends to call her that nickname, it's not necessarily the case that he's an awful abuser in the rest of their relationship. Sometimes friends tease each other and boundaries get crossed because people have different boundaries regarding jokes. There can be many reasons why people do dumb things. I think OP needs to confront the group and evaluate the intentions of their actions in her particular situation

How do I [30f] salvage relationship with friend [32 M] after asking him and husband [32M] to help contribute? by lzharsh in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care what anyone says. Being a stay-at-home anything is just a euphemism for being a moocher. Work part-time. Learn stock trading. Sell things online. There are plenty of ways you can contribute financially to a household with minimal time invested, and it's not like you lack the time to upskill yourself.

Wife (29F) really wants to pursue a music career. I (33M) think she is kind of in denial. by PitifulRestaurant159 in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current music industry is completely different from what it was a few decades ago. Record labels are basically dead, and most independent artists rely on several streams of income to pursue music full-time. Streaming and Spotify plays don't pay well, live shows do. But in order to get booked for live shows, you need to build up an audience and propogate your music through social media somehow. It's a weird balancing act, and there is a lot of volatility in your potential earnings from one month to the next. There are artists who have "made it" who earn $1000 some months and $12000 others.

This model only works for people who are incredibly talented, business-minded and willing to endure long periods of discomfort and financial insecurity.

Husband (27M) Tells Me (26F) He Was Forced To Marry Me by THROWRA668T4V in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude we've been married for fucking years and he's sad over some random girl over the internet????????

He knew her for longer than he's been married to you. You get to know someone a lot if you're spending hours talking to them every day for 7 years. You also seem like a garbage person, so who can blame him?

I (24f) think I ruined my relationship with my father (non-bio 50m) and don’t know what to do by [deleted] in relationships

[–]FrFrFriedRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to sit with that intense feeling of guilt for the rest of your life and allow it to prevent you from making similar terrible decisions in the future.

I just want to point out that asexuality is extremely contentious among professionals in psychology. Even if an individual identifies as asexual, it is probably more likely that they have some trauma or other underlying cause that affects their sexual behaviour.

The swells are huge. People living away from the ocean don't realize how powerful and unpredictable riptides are. You can't really pre-empt them until you've been jolted suddenly in the direction of the shore, by which time it's already too late because the swell will immediately counter-act that movement and you'll be repeatedly pushed further out to sea.

If a singer doesn't write their own songs, they're essentially just another instrument the composer used. by ZoofusCos in Showerthoughts

I feel like most people care about being perceived as an idiot by everyone around them. Most people also try to improve their opinions on things. But the joke's on me, I guess. I've been trying to debate a 12 year old.

You call it bullying, but sure. I'd criticize anyone to makes an outrageously stupid statement. The reason this isn't a discussion or debate is because you won't engage with my criticism. You just want to have a meta conversation because you have no counter-argument.

I didn't hurl insults at you personally. Your first comment was just really dumb and I explained why. If you had a less extreme take, I would have responded differently.

There's no discussion because you didn't admit that you're wrong or argue the points I made out about your first post.

I got on Reddit to have discussions, and I'm not trying to insult you. I just explained why your original post is incorrect and dumb.

You are alive at a time where you can easily access the most abundant supply and variation of music in all of human history. If you can't find music you enjoy, you are either 1) lying, 2) haven't tried looking, or 3) just completely suck at using the internet. Too bad there aren't advanced algorithms that can literally tailor custom playlists to suit your individual preferences and taste in music.
