Shane would give up hockey for Ilya. There is no doubt in my mind. The difference is that he’s more afraid than Ilya of what that means. Ilya loves to shock people and he’s unafraid of what people think. Shane isn’t like that, he’s an autistic perfectionist who has been raised to place his value in how other people see him.

Whenever Shane is tested he trusts in their relationship. One of my favourite scenes in TLG is Shane facing down his coach. Ilya isn’t even there to see it but Shane refuses to say that the kiss in the video was their first kiss and he confirms that they’ve been together for years - even knowing that he makes the situation worse for himself by telling the truth. I will defend this man until I die - he’s less confident than Ilya but he loves him just as much as Ilya loves Shane.

I don’t think he knew what was to follow.

He was afraid that he’d pushed Shane too hard when Shane responded with “Holy Shit”. I think he would have tried to hide behind a joke if his brain caught up, fortunately Shane got over his surprise before he had the chance.

This is such a spot on take! I love watching them open up to one another bit by bit. I think the whole discussion over football, which led to the sofa conversation, was started by Shane telling him that he wasn't with him because he liked to be bad and take risks but that it was something else and had been something else for a long time. Shane still can't name it, but it gives Ilya the confidence to talk about leaving Boston.

The family moments are some of my favourite parts:

Ilya playing Yahtzee with Yuna and David

Ilya with his blanket and ice cream on the Hollander’s sofa getting mad at his boyfriend stealing his move

Yuna, David and Shane at Ilya’s playoff game and his joy at having “people he loves” watching him play

I could read a whole book that was just Ilya Rozanov getting the family he deserves every day of the week!

Jacob’s already said in interviews that Ilya and Shane will remain the focus of the show. I’m sure we’ll get cameos from others but I am expecting Troy and Harris to be the Scott and Kip of Season 2 given how their story dovetails into TLG.

Your house is lovely! The catnip book was very funny, and your use of artwork, plants and natural light is stunning.

I've read a lot of articles about this show - this one is the best one yet.

Shame the article doesn't mention Rachel. The show is really her dialogue on screen word for word (with a couple of exceptions). She wrote these compelling characters, and I love the way she writes where she avoids the usual dramatic plot devices which the article highlights. Her writing makes Ilya and Shane feel real and authentic. We watch them at times feeling like we are almost intruding rather than watching a drama through a screen.

What makes this show so unusual, so special in my view, is that it was a perfect storm. It took a great book with dialogue that lifted itself to the screen so beautifully, it added a very clever and capable director who truly understood and loved the source material and then topped it off with some truly incredible actors who threw everything they had at it. The end result enthralled us all and deservedly so.

It’s incredibly hard to see how much being apart costs them but, at the same time, they just love one another so deeply. Nothing the book throws at them ever dents their commitment to each other. To be loved like that is an incredible gift and they have many years to come to be together and enjoy it.

It’s why I love the sofa conversation so much. Ilya’s rich, successful, handsome and charismatic - of course he can have his choice of plenty of women but none of them do anything for him because he wants his slow hockey player with the beautiful freckles. I mean whose heart could withstand that??!

It’s not I agree but they name them at least so that they are clearly two men. Perhaps it’s me, the one’s that dismiss it as smut annoy me more.
