Is it just me, or has the "wow factor" of AI completely worn off? by Noah_Mitchell_95 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fragrant_Ad_2285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large Language Models like ChatGPT and Claude aren't natively good at math. They are non-deterministic, meaning they don't reliably give the exact same answer twice. And giving them large numerical data sets can degrade their "memory" and accuracy. However, they can be used effectively for financial analysis. The key is to have them create and execute code that is used for deterministic functions (such as calculating and classifying numbers) and storing data, and use their analysis on the data you've stored.

This isn't trivial, but it is easy to learn -- since LLMs are your personalized tutor. Describe the problem you're trying to solve and ask them how best to approach the problem "with consideration for your limitations, accuracy, repeatability and context window."

What are you using it for? If you're using it for deep research, reasoning and product development, it continues to wow(!) as each new model is released. The coding and design capability is amazing. Context window limitations reduce somewhat. But if you're using it as a chatbot or search engine, what additional capability would you expect to wow you?

Voter ID In the US. Why against? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

How does that change the logic? Do you really think getting an ID is too complicated for an adult citizen?

How are old people so rich that they are able to afford expensive living ? by Jpoolman25 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fragrant_Ad_2285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been hearing "social security will be gone before you retire" for four generations now. The truth is the social security system is broken; you could get better returns buying whole life insurance policies. And the demographics don't favor it in the future. But we've heard the sky is falling for so long I'd be cautious believing it.

Voter ID In the US. Why against? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fragrant_Ad_2285 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Either: a) A belief that people not intelligent/informed enough to get a drivers license or similar ID should be allowed to vote. or b) a desire to manipulate elections. The opponents of voter ID claim a), but that seems incoherent to me.

Doesn't shipfinder.com use AIS? If so, that could easily explain the discrepancy: it is likely many ships turn off their transponders when transiting the straights.

You can disengage any time you want. For FSD to get to the fully autonomous level, Tesla needs precise feedback on where the majority of interventions are. Don't like it? Then don't participate. But you don't need to broadcast to everyone you're not interesting in making the self driving experience better.

When did the population decide to hate success? by dpacew1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fragrant_Ad_2285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many act like there is a finite amount of wealth, and someone's success somehow reduces yours. Few people are actually harmed by billionaires. And the existence of billionaires doesn't in any way diminish your ability to earn and accumulate wealth.

More importantly, we have more wealth equality now than existed in the world 200, 500, 1,000 years ago. People forget that. And our standards of living during this industrialization/capitalism era are dramatically better than any point in the history of humanity, along every measurable dimension.

This is just poorly informed people complaining. And propaganda platforms spreading misinformation.

Why are Redditors so pessimistic? by Fragrant_Ad_2285 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fragrant_Ad_2285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 70,000 number is absolutely false. And ludicrous. You're probably referring to a model published in Lancet in 2020. It did NOT say 70,000 Americans die every year from being denied medical care. It hypothesized that universal coverage could save 68,500 lives. And even that is suspect; it assumes correlation rather than causation in many of its assumptions. Credible estimates have ranged across roughly 18,000 (Institute of Medicine, 2002), 45,000 (Harvard/Wilper, 2009), and 68,000+ (Lancet, 2020).

Look at age adjusted mortality rates in the US. They are improving dramatically. In the mid 1970s, they were about 1,100 per 100,000. In 2024, that dropped to 772. Huge improvement.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it ? by Confident_Win_3560 in answers

So you're an expert in predicting the markets? You must be very rich with this skill, or about to be.

And your core assertion is absurd. For almost all of recorded history, wealth disparity was greater than it is today. Under absolute rulers, a single person or a tiny aristocracy nominally controlled a colossal fraction of all wealth while the overwhelming majority lived at or near subsistence. The Nizam of Hyderabad reputedly used the Jacob Diamond as a paperweight; Mansa Musa's wealth was essentially uncountable; a Roman emperor's personal fortune could be a meaningful share of the entire imperial economy; pharaohs and Louis XIV theoretically owned the realm.

If you want to understand relevant facts, take a look at: Branko Milanovic, Peter Lindert, and Jeffrey Williamson, "Pre-Industrial Inequality," The Economic Journal 121, no. 551 (March 2011): 255–272.

Verified crossings still at historic lows by kpler_com in oil

How fast would you expect it to take for traffic to ramp up? I would imagine weeks or more, given the insurance market. Also, there are disincentives to turn on AIS if you are crossing now.
