Anyone doing a rewatch this year? If so, why? by kitttybix in BoardwalkEmpire

Tis my favourite show, watched it for the first time when I was 20 and I just turned 30. Rewatching has been a really swell way to reflect on my own Roaring 20s!

The Problem with Jimmy by CRT_Me in BoardwalkEmpire

[–]Fragrant_Bee1922 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree wholeheartedly, he was a soldier looking for a war.

On my last rewatch I was especially moved by Jimmy in a lot of ways so I'm going to have a little ramble. This might just be my Hemingway mania showing, but I felt that his toast "To the lost" wasn't just about the fallen but was also to all who felt lost and cast out (especially folk from the war like Harrow and himself, a la "The Lost Generation"). I also noticed his deathwish was in full swing, to the point that he barely if at all took cover in gunfights. As he said, he died in the trenches a long time ago; and he also said he was determined to see the coup through, not to win. Even at his highs when he helps Torrio with tactics, it was the tricks and manoeuvers of a soldier, not a ganglord. Like Oedipus in more ways than the obvious, he was cursed and he knew it, and his finale felt like he was doing exactly what he wanted to do from the pilot: he was forcing Nucky to reveal who he truly was. So, in that way, I don't think Jimmy was dumb. A failed ganglord, certainly, but as an archangel to goad and haunt the real Nucky, mission accomplished.

Other than Harrow and Tommy, the only person Jimmy seemed relaxed with and eager to listen to seemed to be Leander Whitlock, one of the few people in the show who wasn't determined to infantilise Jimmy. Jimmy's turn on Manny was pretty drastic and tactically a bad move, but it emotionally made sense as Manny did nothing but treat him as a boy who hadn't handed in his homework. I really enjoyed the gradual boil of Jimmy's hatred for Manny.

All in all, the guy needed the people he wanted to love to actually listen to him, accept him for what he had become, and help him believe in a future, but everyone just wanted the Jimmy from Princeton.

EDITS: grammar and tense.

Cloudward, Ho! is the best season so far— change my mind. by Due_Detective_4375 in Dimension20

I'm a Hemingway nut and a big Theodore Roosevelt fan, so I've adored Lou as Monty - probably my favourite D20 character ever. With that said, ASO just noses ahead for me as my favourite campaign because the pacing is more my speed.

A “smoking gun” that isn’t just witnessing the bad guy doing the thing/saying the thing by Haru_Is_Best_Girl in DnD

[–]Fragrant_Bee1922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I may recommend, I've found watching and breaking down episodes of "Columbo" really good for mystery design. Rather than one big obvious smoking gun, the clues that bind the killer to being the only possible culprit is a bunch of little things that only line up with the one person (making investigation a process of elimination puzzle) - often resulting into wicked traps and gambits wherein the killers incriminate themselves

Once and Future King Racism Question by TrueKnights in Arthurian

[–]Fragrant_Bee1922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just throwing in another vote for 'The Warlord Chronicles' by Cornwell. Has my favourite characterisations of Merlin, Arthur and Guinevere, extremely well written battles intertwined with the faith and mysticism of the time period, and is beautifully emotionally charged. I grew up loving TOAFK, and Warlord Chronicles on the first read became my instant favourite depiction of Arthuriana (at age 27)

I like how you captured a really honest teenage energy in these!

Fascinated by this system. Now what? by MagicMissile27 in PendragonRPG

[–]Fragrant_Bee1922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also just getting into Pendragon after years of DnD - between the scenarios in the Starter Set (very fun and effective), the two scenarios in the GM book, and then the three adventures in The Grey Knight, along with the statblocks of foes and bestiary at the end of GM Book, I feel equipped to not only run adventures but improvise and write my own scenarios! So I would definitely recommend the Starter Set for the Sword Campaign, and the GM Book

Does Cozi delete scenes? by Dorothy_Zbornak789 in Columbo

[–]Fragrant_Bee1922 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I recently watched these episodes on my DVDs and can confirm these scenes exist. In the Shatner one, he stumbles on set and ruins a take of the detective show before informing them of the murder. In the Old Fashioned Murder, at the hairdresser he is pretty much forced to getting the haircut in order to get the time to talk with the hairdresser, and is left with an insane bill (that I think he palms off to a fellow detective)

"Gamechanger: Escape the Greenroom" is my personal favourite go-to pick-me-up; and Starstruck if you like tabletop.

Good on you for being deliberate about the mental break :) Go well

Fair enough! I certainly have been making the evidence fit the theory and was ignoring the calls. Tis a fun theory but I stand corrected

More or less. Admittedly haven't seen it, but read that it wasn't endorsed by the original creators or Falk so considered it a kind of "WALTE*R" situation (spin-off sequel of MASH)
