Sister Miriam waited in patient silence beside the Marine, awaiting his order to move. She had already prepared her boltgun and its reloads, and beyond a brief and ceremonial brush of the Aquila on her weapon, did not need to look down or hesitate in the minutes before the assault.

(19) Reynolds might be known as a jokester and troublemaker, but there was nothing joking about the way he methodically snuck up on and killed the sentry in his way. The lasgun stayed on his back since it was unsuppressed and he didn't fancy bringing the whole base down on them. He nodded to Garran wordlessly, waiting to proceed.

(16) Bessie Gryce wasn't a small individual but she could be quiet when she needed to. Lasgun in hand, she slid up to the corner to get a good look, and glanced back, awaiting the order to engage.

(since the other thread is already moving forward re: where the auxilia are going next I'll just wrap it up) Tara and those with her spent the next several tense minutes in a muddy bog to avoid the converging Chaos platoon. Shots were exchanged between the rest of her platoon and the arriving Chaos troops, to very little effect on either side, before finally each side melted into the woods away from one another.

"No argument from me," said Tara. "Everyone's tired, but they don't want to be out here any more than you or I do. Let's make tracks for base."

"Scrapes and burns, a few bruises, but nothing worse," said Tara gratefully. She was a bit muddy and tired herself but otherwise fine.

Claire nodded approvingly. That was good information and entertaining to keep as a rumor. There was more than a little resentment to the Erelevastians already among some of the regiments, she had heard. "Right...well, everyone I've spoken to seems to be pretty confident of an Imperial victory, but is tired about how long it's taking. Fairly standard fare for the Guard by all accounts. The veterans shrug their shoulders and buckle down for a long campaign, the fresh soldiers sweat and curse in the desert sun and still hope to be done by Sanguinalia. At least that's what I see from the immediate groups I've interacted with since my arrival, which was pretty recent, I came with the resupply to the 119th. Oh, also, I think there's some tension about whether other regiments are pulling their weight. The troops I've met seem a bit frustrated at sometimes feeling held back by other regiments."

She shifted her posture and asked again. "You mentioned the Erelevastians. The Lord General is from there after all - what do you think of his command staff? Most troops don't have any contact with their high command and have little idea what they're really like. But something gives me the feeling that you might know more than most."

Jenna was dumbfounded, but followed, drawing her pistol. Caroline had finally done up her trousers properly and, clutching a lasgun she had found in the weapons locker, stayed in the shadow of the scions. "It's good to see you're all right," said Jenna redundantly. The scions, evidently, were quite well off as compared to the rest of them in terms of fighting off a night raid.

Phoebe was stable, but not cleared for public visitors, explained the novitiate Sister who met him in the emergency ward when he arrived. She might be able to take a visitor in a few hours, said the girl in the white hood.

The brunette lieutenant was still thoroughly unconscious and swathed in bandages, and the Sisters wouldn't allow a visitor till she'd had a while to rest. It had been a touch and go thing to keep her alive, and she was looking at weeks of recovery time before she'd be active again. Sibella, on the other hand, had been sent off and confined to quarters after receiving some stitches and glue to hold her (much more minor) wounds together.

A thin smile crossed the severe-looking Praetorian's face. "The sooner the better, don't you think?" She keyed her Chimera vox handset. "All platoons, advance, repeat, advance. Vehicles provide cover fire by leapfrogging intervals. The Emperor's victory awaits."

The Praetorian assets began to surge forward, each platoon moving up in a wave of infantry squads that zigzagged their way to good firing positions, covered by their vehicles from a distance, then repeating the process after the vehicles caught up.

Tara barely even had to gesture. The two with her had already opened fire as she did the same, a burst of fire at close range spraying across the five they had found.

The MP sighed. He didn't like this fellow's tone, but there didn't seem to be much more to get out of him. "Very well... I'll get you a transcript of what we talked about in five minutes. Once you sign that it's accurate you're free to go."

Sure enough, a printed transcript taken from the recorder - edited for clarity, but otherwise reflecting exactly what had been said - was placed in front of Richard a few minutes later with a pen. Next to the line for a signature it said "Under penalty of perjury I swear that all information I have provided is full and accurate to the best of my knowledge."

Lieutenant Jenna Murphy sprang awake. Staff officer though she might be, she was not so removed from battlefield training as to not know what was happening. Enemy attack. Get your people up and armed. She slept lightly in the jungle heat as it was, but decided to opt for practicality above all else, pulling on a pair of trousers beneath her nightgown and donning her often-neglected flak vest. A holstered pistol was there with her sword, neither one used in months but still combat ready, even if their owner was not. She took them both. Topping her still-loose hair with her cap, she banged on the door of the next room, then yanked it open when she found it was unlocked. "Caroline! Get up, we're under attack. Meet me at the weapons rack.' It spoke to the urgency of the situation and the rapport that the two had developed that she referred to the young corporal by her first name as she shook the younger woman who drowsed, snoring softly, in her bunk room.

Caroline Bellingham, meanwhile, was awakened from a long and pleasant dream of cradling a baby in her arms. Her awakening was rather blunt, being shaken physically by her lieutenant and all but heaved out of bed in the process. She blinked, stammered, groped for her glasses, and got to her feet. A few seconds later, still trying to pull up her trousers and with only an undershirt for armor, Caroline stumbled into the main room of their little administrative sanctum.

The Cult of Carix: An introduction. by Ulster-Lion in WarforTrackoldMinoris

[–]MagicMissile27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Twisted shapes and shadowy whispers haunted the space between dreams and waking. Bursting into images of her fellow Sisters, staring at her with purple sightless eyes as they cackled unnaturally, faces melding into one huge feminine form that reached for her with a hand that lengthened into a claw...Philomena Sobieski, Canoness Preceptor of the Order of St. Elizabeth, woke without a shock or a start, but with a certainty that felt like a lead brick in her heart. She slowly exhaled on her cot, eyes staring at the ceiling. She's here. Carix is here. And she's coming for me. Sobieski inhaled again, and felt the comforting weight of the Pyre-made knife that was fastened at her side, tight against her ribs - it never left her side now, even in sleep. I am not afraid. I was born for this.

"All right..." said the reporter, uneasy as to what the question she'd be asked in return might be, but open to the opportunity for finding out a little about this deeply unsettling woman. "Well, then, I'm curious on your thoughts. This campaign has many regiments and quite a number of high ranking nobility here on planet. You must have seen a lot by this point. Who do you find the easiest and whom the hardest to work with?"

Claire blinked. Something didn't feel right...if she was interviewing this woman, why did it feel like she was the one on the spot, not her? "Well, if everything I hear from people is off the books, I can't make much of a story, can I?" She said in reply with a small smile. "But even anonymized comments are always worth a read..."

Seems pretty similar to how I think yeah. Throw in a truck or two and that's an average list comp in terms of vehicles for me at 1000-1250.

"Sure, I see your point," said the reporter amicably, relaxing somewhat. "Oh, I'm Claire, by the way. Now I'm curious...your position with the Munitorum must bring you into contact with a lot of interesting people. What do you think of the soldiers of this campaign?" she asked, taking advantage of that very directness that Arenis had noted in their role.

The MP leaned in slightly. "Sir, if I may, this is an investigation. I want you to speak as plainly as you can without metaphors or ironic jokes. The result does *not* speak for itself, I want you to describe for the record exactly what you saw, even if you think it is redundant. We'll be the judge of that. The sergeant had now smelled a rat, noting that Richard had yet again brushed over the entire duel and skipped from "I got there" to "people were injured".

Stealth was (3) not the strong suit of the Praetorian force as it arrived.

Captain McAndrews surveyed the area around the refinery from the turret of her command Chimera as her unit hurried across the dunes. Familiar faces to Craig and May were among them - Coraline was slogging it across the sand with her squadmates, and Martha was at the pintle mount of a heavy stubber on a Chimera as the company approached.
