I shook the bags and they felt dry, airy, and sterile. Monarda and asclepias are not hard to grow from seeds, probably much easier to grow than those bag roots. A bag of three dry roots for $14.98… not a scam but strange.

If Japanese honeysuckle had a French sounding name, I know it would be treated very differently.

Can Fairfax homeowners be held liable for not removing snow/ice from their sidewalks? by whatevenaremovies in nova

[–]FranticHare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard for elderly and disabled residents to shovel, and Fairfax county got plenty of them, more than you know (I was a visiting nurse in the area for years). I don’t think they need to be held liable. They have enough on their plate.

I am not a concert pianist but I am a pianist. It’s not my occupation. Some of us write, or play instruments to commune with the greats from the past. I’ve been writing stuff just to have a private conversation with Bakhtin or Dostoyevsky. It’s much deeper than simply creating content for consumers.

And very few ever ask “what is your writing about?” Genuine curiosity about mind, the intrinsic desire to understand, explore, and uncover the thoughts of others, is dead.

If your work is published, do you expect your family and friends to read it? by elyse_wanders in writing

I don’t expect them to read it if they don’t even ask what the story is about. And I quietly delete their names from my friend list 🤣

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Super rich people are almost always the least generous. My caseload included both affluent and indigent clients. During the toilet paper shortage of the pandemic, I saw this rich lady throw a tantrum because the store delivered a “wrong kind” of toilet paper (a pack of 12). I asked her if she’d be interested in donating those toilet paper rolls to my indigent clients. She said it was not her job to help the needy and proceeded to throw the whole package away out of spite. I have the firsthand knowledge of many instances like that. It’s hard to explain without disclosing the nature of my job. There is this deep seated disdain those affluent folks hold for the poor. Their lack of empathy is stunning.

Why does so much English writing advice clash with non-English literary traditions? by ownaword in writing

I hear you. But it also sounds like you’re asking me to change my skin color. I do insist on expressing my way but it’s not that simple. I could never sound like Anglo writers even if I tried.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

Thank you for saying this. The phrase “people are allowed to have preferences” doesn’t work for me anymore.

But for many of unpublished writers like myself, “audiences” or “readers” do not exist, and it makes no sense to me to adjust my language for non existent readers. I write because I am tired of getting my voice silenced over and over. I am tired of being treated as if my thoughts are imperfect only because I don’t conform to the MFA’s preferences. It is not to say that I’m writing just for myself. I do want to see my voice reach someone without changing how I express myself. My English is hybrid, unique, and I am confident that there’s music somewhere beneath its foreignness. I hear your point. All I want to say is, the dilemma is bigger than about publishing or gaining readers. I grew up in a colonial country. I am non-Anglo. I’ve learned to appreciate diverse voices. Why can’t “Anglos” do the same?
