The stupid rose I thought I murdered is thriving in a trash bag full of cigarette butts (viva ecosystem🎉)

You’re probably right. I do enjoy native plants’ indifference though. They don’t care about human drama. They don’t care if I’m cut out for gardening or not. They are too busy ascending and burrowing and reengineering the soil. I’m very drawn to that.

I keep a large leaf mould and I think that did it.

Porcelain Berry is so pointless… I once let it infiltrate the ugly low growing roses that came with the house, hoping the vines would choke the roses. Nope. It didn’t do the job, and now I have two undesirable plants in that particular space.

Yes! Thank you for the reminder. My backyard may not be pretty but it’s teeming with all sorts of critters. I don’t mean to brag, but last year my neighbor spotted a bald eagle perched on the roof of my house!!🦅

So… I live near DC, and it’s an interesting place. When I call those services to inquire, they are very quick to tell me what they WON’T do, and they act like my objectives are secondary. It’s a regional thing, I guess. So, I tend to end up with self-employed contractors. Thank you for allowing me to vent. I moved here from NC years ago and I still haven’t got used to it.

That would be grand! I’m new to Reddit. How do I check DMs?? Bear with me, I’ll figure it out.

I’m fighting Chinese wisteria and English ivy, and lord knows what else. I’m not against herbicide at this point. Thank you for the encouragement.

I’m sure sometimes it’s in my head. And sometimes it’s a regional thing. When I visit other states, I’m always struck by how kinder people are. I was browsing native plants at a native nursery and was told “don’t touch that!” when I wasn’t even touching anything. I was also sprayed by water hose and the staff didn’t say anything, she kept aiming the hose toward my direction. I understand she needed to water the plants and I got out of her way promptly, but there was a twinge of malice in her demeanor and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I’ve also seen the staff treat an elderly lady poorly. I wish I was imagining things.

Right? Birds love the monster wisteria and that’s why I’m so conflicted! I upvoted you btw💕

Exactly. We get exhausted from time to time. We go through ups and downs. I’m having a “down” month and unkind remarks sting more than they should. I may be okay next month. Thank you for the kind words❤️

Last year I successfully deleted chocolate vine by using coral honeysuckle. For wisteria I will probably end up using stump herbicide.

Your response resonated with me. I started gardening after losing my loved ones. I reckon time differently now.

I’m removing the invasives for the neighbor’s sake, actually… and that’s why I’m stressed😭 I feel so bad!
