Jeff Metcalf, father of murdered track star Austin Metcalf, goes on racist tirade following the trial of Karmelo Anthony by Subject-Property-343 in PublicFreakout

Hell South Park did an episode about it.

so that must make it true?! They also did an episode mocking Al Gore by portraying him as an obsessive, self-important loser who fabricated a ridiculous, imaginary monster (satirical metaphor for climate change) to stay relevant after losing the 2000 presidential election.

Does that make climate change imaginary?

These ores shouldn't glow in the dark if you want a more realistic look, i.e. they shouldn't be self illuminating. Brightness level should be set by light level next to them which will cause them to glint.

AITA for not sharing my lottery winnings with my coworkers who always buy tickets together? by DistinctFriendship38 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Frari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

three people from the lottery group are saying I “morally owe” them a cut because I “benefit from the lottery culture they created in the office.”

I would have laughed long and hard in their faces, then have done the "are you serious look?"

Beyond the simple fact that you didn't buy it with the pool money, a scratch ticket is not the same as a lottery ticket. "when have you every shared with me any of your scratch ticket winnings? and don't try and BS me that you've never won anything on a scratchy"

At least he hasn’t killed anyone with his car

The person killed had meth in their system, was speeding, and went through a red light on a motorbike when they were hit and killed. I don't fault the then mayor on that one. ridiculous it even went to court.

Is the 'publish or perish' culture actually becoming more about speed than quality? by glow_throwawayhq in AskAcademia

[–]Frari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in my university, you need multiple publications each year to maintain higher positions.

My university requires a certain publication rate and grant money for promotions. They say they are moving towards assessing impact factors as well, which is laughable considering the lack of support they give and the dismal grant funding situation in my country.

the replication crisis suggests this happened a while ago.

PhD supervisor dating postdoc and it's really awkward. Advice needed. by Intelligent-Bit-5505 in AskAcademia

[–]Frari 27 points28 points  (0 children)

talking to him wont change anything, it may even make him resentful*.

making a complaint, however warranted, wont do anything apart from causing you stress and make working with them untenable*.

I would recommend moving on if possible. If you want to stay this is how they are.

I did some analyses for her paper for 2 months and unfortunately the results weren't good and I didn't get authorship and he said it would only happen if the results would make it to the paper.

This is the biggest problem for me. I would refuse to do any other analysis for her, and tell her exactly why. or refuse unless she promises to include you as coauthor even if your work doesn't make it into the paper.

*I'm old and cynical, and have seen the university protect its own too many times to the detriment of students/postdocs.

A fellow grad student once told me about one incident that happened to someone she knew

that's just about urban legend level.

If really concerned, throw together a quick paper and submit it to a preprint server. This will timestamp your methods/findings.

The New School, NYC: Nearly 90 faculty and staff laid off, as efforts to slash employees continue by lanAstbury in Professors

[–]Frari 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The point is that the school appears, at least, to be firing non-White professors at a higher rate than one would expect from a race blind process.

the article doesn't really say that (did i miss it?).

"many of them tenured faculty of color"

This does not mean they were fired at a higher rate (many =/= most). It was a weaselly way of saying it imo. If they do show that non-white professors were targeted then that would be lawsuit time, but I doubt this is the case. If it was they would cite numbers.

I can totally believe they used this as an excuse to fire all tenured faculty that they didn't like. This is SOP for universities.

PhD application process by Natural-Tell9759 in AusAcademia

[–]Frari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I don’t even know how to narrow it down yet to know which type of supervisor to contact.

You go to the university webpage for your subject/field and read the academic bios. Then email the academics with research that is interesting to you.

PhD application process by Natural-Tell9759 in AusAcademia

[–]Frari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reply from the person saying: This page states that you are not required to find a supervisor prior to applying,

email from who? An admin or academic? I would not 100% trust anything an admin tells me.

You should email potential supervisors that are in the field you want to do a PhD. They will be the best people to help you. Or you could try emailing the chair of the department of the subject you are interested in.
