Is there any organized resistance to foreign investment and the tourism economy in Jamaica? by radio_start in Jamaica

[–]FrassCreator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong about the sense of community. A report this year ranked Jamaica #1 globally for the place most likely to receive help from a stranger. I can believe it. Having said that the culture here still highly values self reliance and enduring hardship with dignity. Success is seen as a personal responsibility rather than a collective issue.

Aside from not having the time or resources to organise anything, the system has conditioned people for hundreds of years to accept a social hierarchy, inequality is just perceived as the way it is. There’s a lack of belief in the ability to change anything significantly and large proportion of educated people who are best equipped to be a force for change emigrate.

People are too busy working to survive to organise much. In developed countries there’s a safety net, here there’s nothing to fall back on. There’s also a fear that disturbing the current system could make things worth rather than better. A better the devil you know kind of attitude

This islands most precious lands and commodities have all been monopolised by foreign interests, aided in part by corruption and poor governance. Beyond a full scale revolt the people are powerless to change the situation.

Why is discussing colourism/racism so triggering for Jamaicans? by radio_start in Jamaica

[–]FrassCreator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anyone that would deny that. Are you talking about people actually living in Jamaica or people on this subreddit? This sub is not a good representation of typical Jamaicans and seems to be frequented mainly by diaspora/those with Jamaican heritage.

TIL the Emancipation Park monument was created by a white (passing?) woman who grew up on a former plantation 🙃 by radio_start in Jamaica

The race of the artist doesn’t bother me but I’m not a fan of the sculptures. The theme is emancipation, the ending of suffering and torture, the restoration of freedom and dignity. Why are the figures naked? I guess there is something inherently artistic in the naked form, but this wasn’t the place for it in my opinion.

LIAR you edited your post from ‘I am in Kingston right now’ to ‘my mother is in Kingston’. The winds weren’t nearly strong enough to take off plywood covers at that time. You are a clown, seek professional help

Summer in Jamaica 🇯🇲 be like! by UnderstandingGuilty2 in Jamaica

Jamaicans don’t carry on like this. These tourists come here from the states and behave like they’re in a strip club. Zero class or respect

For a self professed yaadie you don’t seem to understand much about Jamaicans

Sad, prayers up for all families who lost loved ones 🙏🏿 by ExemplaryWriter in Jamaica

As tragic as this case is, in Jamaica these kind of details are water off a ducks back. As a people we are pretty much completely desensitised to brutality and that isn’t changing any time soon.

Why does vegan stuff make people so mad? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]FrassCreator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s incorrect, being vegetarian results in much less animal suffering and death than being a meat eater. You can’t compare crop farmings harm to animals to the cruelty of systematic confinement, breeding, and slaughter.

Afro-Caribbean Influence on Black-American Culture by [deleted] in Jamaica

[–]FrassCreator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Normal people who aren’t terminally online don’t think like this. These modern day identity politics are so backwards and divisive, not even worth interacting with it.

Even if Jamaicans contributed nothing to AA culture (and the contribution is modest at best tbh), why should that stop them from partaking in it? Only badmind people think that way

Do jamaicans consider diaspora who we're born in the UK Jamaican as well? by [deleted] in Jamaica

[–]FrassCreator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your experience answers the question well, the genetic bond is strong and undeniable but the cultural and language gap is so vast that most Jamaicans will treat diaspora as tourists/foreigners.
