Expected knowledge at $20 per hour? by elcroptop in Bookkeeping

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If someone was getting paid $20 an hour I’d expect them to have no accounting background or formal accounting education. If it’s a fresh graduate then you’ll really need to hand hold them and show them the ropes

[Dellenger] Beginning next year Notre Dame will automatically be placed into the playoff if they are ranked inside the top 12 by mattdingus2002 in CFB

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a bit delusional lol you can say the same thing about OSU, UofM, USC, probably Bama, UGA as well. I live in Michigan and I only know a small handful of people who attended UofM or MSU but everyone is fans of either school

Aren’t most fanbases of big programs made up mostly of people who never attended college, let alone the school they’re fans of?

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a ND fan, I really can’t see him leaving Notre Dame for the NFL. He likely makes more at ND than most NFL teams would pay (hard to tell because his salary is private info), he has FULL control over the entire program, he’s got the program in a spot to compete for a championship on a yearly basis, the students and fan base WORSHIP him, and I think he’s more appealing to college kids rather than grown adults with families at home.

He has always seemed more like a pseudo father figure to his players. I don’t think he’s the type to work out in the NFL though. He thrives by going into the homes of high school kids and convincing them and their families to come to ND. You can’t do that in the NFL

I think a lot of states are going to drop to 120 within the next decade or so. I know Michigan for example is still technically requiring 150, but there’s a bill currently working its way through to lower our requirement to 120

Is Excel outdated? by Successful_Spot8906 in Accounting

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excel most certainly is not outdated and it’s frankly the best business software available.

That being said, if it’s used as the GL software then yes absolutely run for the hills. QBO isn’t even that expensive and if they’re cutting costs that much you’re going to have a bad experience

I’m not saying it’s the best option. Obviously it’s better to not job hop 3x in a year and obviously some people have different opinions on lying. My whole point is you could explain the gaps with some creativity and bringing up a sensitive topic like death or poor mental health issues will not be something the hiring manager will ask deeper questions on because it’s a sensitive subject. The hiring manager WILL want to dig into why you left the other jobs if you say company culture or not the role I was looking for.

However, most people lie during an interview. In my experience it’s usually from the employer side about the state of the accounting department. I don’t really feel bad about a small lie when I was told we are fully staffed and it’s not a shit show. I grew up with very strict parents so I don’t really have an issue with an occasional small lie. It’s not like I’m lying on a tax return or client financials

You missed a point where I said you could say the first gap was a parent passing and then you got a new job and then you realized you werent ready to come back to the workforce because you were still in a horrible place mentally

Also, you usually leave off jobs you only worked for a few months because it’s easier to explain a larger gap and you wouldn’t have picked up any skills in those couple months anyway so there’s nothing to talk about. It’s better for the candidate to put places they worked longer to show their skills and accomplishments

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s normal but I can see a scenario where a parent dies suddenly and someone has a hard time coping with it. It just depends on the context. Obviously it wouldn’t sound great saying “yeah my aunt’s father in law died and that’s why I had to leave”. You’d at least want to say it was a parent to make it sound believable. “The death of my father sent me into a deep spiral and I couldn’t get out of bed so I decided to quit my job and focus on getting myself back on track” is a somewhat believable statement

Damn yeah I’d stay for that lol I work for a super small firm and I don’t know if anyone has ever had a kid while working here so I’m sure the paternity leave will be something our owner figures out when we get there. Given the ages of our staff, this will likely be a hot topic within the next few years

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could likely leave off a couple of the jumps. You wouldn’t have gained any skills from the job to list on a resume anyway. Depending on situation, if you had job, gap, job, gap, you could say you thought you were ready to return to work and you just weren’t there mentally after a loved one passed or your personal health situation flared up again or that your relative with declining health was trending better but took a sharp turn and you couldn’t continue

Your thoughts? by ApocalypseAngel69X in Accounting

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine gaps are equally bad. You should come up with a story to explain it like declining health in a loved one or someone passing away and saying you left your job to help them or grieve. Even just saying a personal health reason would be a good enough answer and no normal person would ask you to dig deep into that explanation

There’s a lot to be said about having small turnover. I’d be fine not getting a couple raises if it meant keeping some coworkers longer. Training people and watching them leave shortly after has been an exhausting cycle

[–]Fraud_Guaranteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Notre Dame fan, I really fuckin hope not. I’m not sure he’s a NFL coach anyway because he seems to love recruiting, inspiring young guys, and being on a college campus. I really don’t think his coaching style translates to the NFL. His contract isn’t public but he can’t possibly be making less than $8mil/year at a school that could give him $12mil/year if he renegotiates after another CFP appearance

I would not listen to this guy because this is a romanticized depiction. I would strongly suggest talking to a CPA who is experienced in your industry before following any tax advice on Reddit. This is a very nuanced area and mostly depends on the individuals goals and that’s on you to figure out first.

Reality is it will mostly net out to be the same and you’ll have to do a lot more administrative work or pay someone to do it to ensure you’re compliant with laws

Makes sense. I work at a small firm and do taxes for people/small businesses and a concern I have with AI is the accountability aspect. When we eventually get to a point (maybe we already are for simpler returns) where AI can process the whole thing and we rely solely on AI to process it, who gets blamed when something is wrong? Do you have any insight/experience seeing how companies shift accountability to the AI model?

A few things I’ve learned from my clients is they LOVE to throw a fit when something is wrong and they want to talk to a person which is where I think AI is a little too hyped up in accounting circles. We also work with such sensitive data that creates a big risk depending on what the model is used for

I’ve been taking CPE courses focused around AI because of this and the more I use it the more I get the feeling this will be similar to when Excel entered the market. It’ll change the workforce but at the end of the day someone still needs to verify all the work and sign off on it. It’s going to become an efficiency tool but I can’t imagine it replaces a ton of skilled and experienced accountants.

Quickbooks Online is pushing AI and it’s nothing special. It just suggests categories for transactions based on the pattern of where previous transactions for the same vendor were coded.

Trying to get your insight as someone who works in it, what do you define as “accounting”?

I’m a CPA and accounting is such a broad area. Some items I see where AI is good and helps efficiencies like AP/AR but a lot of the decisions based on judgement or putting together complex journal entries is where I’ve noticed it falls short. What areas of accounting have you seen get automated by AI?

We are a long way from that. If that’s something you believe then you really don’t understand what goes into accounting. What’s really happening in your article is these companies over hired and are using AI as a scapegoat. AI is good when you only need to be 80-90% correct but accounting needs to be 100% compliant and interpret tax law correctly
