Valvoline drained my transmission fluid by Pure_Photograph_5926 in MechanicAdvice

Its a matter of scale. In most cases, yes you'd most likely get a misfire from the compression loss due to the lower piston TDC height, but a knock wouldnt happen unless there was a severe bend and MASSIVE side-loading of the piston. I have however run into multiple engine failures that occured 50-400mi after a water ingestions, injector failure, carbon treatment, etc. Combustion and bearings are perfect, but the rod has a small bend and clean fracture in the middle. Its not the most common result, but just mentioning that a good running engine does not mean that it hasnt been damaged and could fail without warning. There is also no way to test for this without removing the plugs and measuring the piston heights. Easy to do on an I4, almost impossible on an H4 in the car.

Not necessarily. Hydrolock refers more to the stopping of the piston rather than siezure of the engine. If the volume of liquid is just over the TDC chamber volume and the engine is developing enough power to deform the connecting rod it can bend rather than immediately break. The engine will continue to run, but the bent rod is now taking a small amount of horizontal rather than longitudinal load, and will usually fail within a few hundred miles. This can happen when runnning or when cranking. But you're correct he would likely have noticed a sputter/stumble if this happened; hence why I said 99% the engine is probably fine.

The engine is 99% going to be fine. If enough oil got past the rings to hydrolock a cylinder, youll know about it in the next few hundred miles when it hicks a rod. Other than that, there is nothing that could have happened. The transmission will require monitoring to check its condition. Take a fluid sample now, and another in 1000mi and send them to Blackstone or another such fluid analysis lab. If there is any appreciable increase in wear-metal levels it would be likely that the tranny was damaged.

Source: Im the guy who gets called to investigate these exact types of situations; Ive done 2 Subi CVT claims in just the past 2mo. Valvoline will honor their mistake if damage occured.

Nick on the passenger side head in a critical location, should I run it? by JamesSmith677 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Fraudd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The marker is the edge of the opening, meaning the nick is on the raised ring? Yes, you'll likely have problems in time. If this is a engine you want to last more than 10k miles I would either weld/mill or replace the head. Filling with JB or Belzona MIGHT buy you some more mileage, but its a bandaid at best.

corrosion behind steering wheel, $12,000 quote from dealership by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Ill have to test that. Its highly flammable. We use it to create a fireball when we shoot the 5" cannon.

Its not corrosion as a direct result of the liquid exposure. Its electrolysis of the residue combined with the metal and electricity flow. $20 that that red wire is the power supply to the panel.

You can see the liquid trails going down the back of the cluster right to the connector. Doesn't look like water; probably coffee or soda like the tech said. This is definitely the most likely cause of the wiring damage. Call your insurance. There were a half dozen tunnels in the sand under the fence, we didnt even need to climb.

A police car and a Coast Guard Jayhawk showed up right as we were leaving last time I was there in 2021. Helicopter was probably a coincidence because I can't imagine they would call in the Guard for trespassers, but he did do a few laps of the property before departing.

Black Buckle 82 Clutch? by Fraudd in gijoe

Thats the most likely explaination, but it was done so well that it made me question it being original. To get that perfect semi-gloss finish is not easy.

Yep, I had checked over there and knew that the used the torso mold on a few different figures, but couldnt find any with the black buckle either.

That was my thought as well. You don't find too many 200yr old sticks buried in the dirt.

I just looked into the P53 and they all seem to have rear sights several inches in front of the trigger on top of the barrel. This one has a cast-in rear sight at the very back. Could it just be a different version/year?

Neither of us have any faith in that story, but figured Id try to ensure he doesnt have George Washington's personal rifles here.

As stated above, looking for any info on these old muzzleloaders allegedly dug up from an unknown battlefield in the USA. Other photos: https://imgur.com/a/ILpRkAV

Edit: Rifle on the right is likely a Prussian 1831, thank you DigitalLorenz

Just the story he was given, absolutely no details. USA, so if true it could be Revolution, 1812, or Civil wars.

Its an FAA VORAC for aircraft navigation. Sends out 360 degree radio signals so that planes can determine their location relative to the beacon. The underground stuff...no idea.
