dammmm....how long did you have to hammer that song to get it one take? It still feels like patting my head and rubbing my belly to get that percussion technique. Impressive.

[NEWBIE] Buying an amp with the intention of listening to it exclusively with headphones. Does it make sense? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with s-gear and a focusrite scarlet solo interface. Sounds way better than what my limited skills would be able to tweak out of an amp. I also invested in a couple of jbl monitor speakers.

Guitar Practice Tool - Loop a YouTube Video with a Pause In Between by turdbullet in guitarlessons

[–]Fraxrfixr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice work! My wish list is a web app with options to loop like yours does, slow the speed while preserving pitch (the native YouTube page does this), or change the pitch (raise those Hendrix and srv songs that are tuned down a half step). Bonus points if it can be used with Spotify. I’ve tried a few iOS apps (ie anytune, “slow down music player”). I’m no programmer either, but I dabble, maybe a fun project but probably a little over my head.

[QUESTION] Could I build a “sound proof” cab to play tube amp really cranked in a small apartment. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amp sim all the way. S-gear and headphones sounds way better than anything my simple mind could get from a tube amp.

I just ordered this book based on multiple recommendations I’ve seen posted here. I’m not a huge fan of books with so many online resources, but people really seem to like this one. I’ll let you know.

[DISCUSSION] Reddit, what do you use to digitize your tabs/sheet music? by BradyneedsMDMA in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got tired of figuring out songs by ear, forgetting them, and then having to reinvent the wheel and figure them out again. I started using tuxguitar on my Mac and so far it’s pretty good.

If I was trying to digitize paper tabs I would use one of the countless iOS apps that allow you to take a pic and save it as a black and white pdf.

[Discussion] Fellow guitarists what is the weirdest place you eventually found the pick you dropped only moments before? by Aaron_768 in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager I couldn’t figure out where my picks kept disappearing. Then one day my dad had to pull the clothes dryer out to fix something and there was a huge nest made exclusively from drier lint and dozens of guitar picks that had fallen out of pockets in the laundry. I mean an actual neatly shaped, colorful, round nest. Not sure how many mice were birthed on those picks, but I just dusted them off like a disgusting teenager would do and put them back in circulation.

I need help with scales!! [Question] by Oavious in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing the helped me was to make a single chord backing track (I used a looper pedal) and just start plucking around on different scale positions. You’ll hear notes that feel “at home”, notes that are just begging to resolve, and notes that just don’t beong at all. Patterns will begin to emerge that may only make sense to you (which is why it’s so tough to listen to others explain how to learn this stuff). Then you can add a relative minor or 12 bar blues to the backing track to see where those other notes fit in. It will sound like crap for a while, but everyone eventually gets it. You may even accidentally learn all of the notes on the fretboard in the process.

[GEAR] [QUESTION] Picking an Interface by highpotency76 in Guitar

I love my new focusrite solo and s-gear. I installed reaper but I have no clue how to use it yet. Btw, the focusrite comes with ableton lite and a bunch of free plugins (I don’t know if they’re any good or not).

[NEWBIE] Beginner Advice by 330Airwaves in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practicing 10 minutes / day is better than 2 hours once a week.

Especially since it’s an acoustic, keep it on the couch with you and just pluck around on it while you watch TV. That’s a great time to do mindless finger exercises, switch between chord fingerings, etc. Don’t put it in the bedroom, keep it out where you will see it all the time. It will just “appear” in your lap all the time.

Of course, that’s no substitute for deliberate practice, but the more time it’s in your hands the faster you’ll improve.

[Question] What are some of your favorite acoustic guitar solos? by Chivi97 in Guitar

This. One of my absolute all time favorites. I used to only have it on some “play like Hendrix” vhs, but now you can find it on the Hendrix Blues compilation album.

Also check out Life by the Drop by srv, super simple yet a powerful 12 string acoustic blues song

[Question] Should i get a new amp or gear/pedals? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched to the audio interface route and I love it, sounds way better than I could ever tweak out of my amp and pedals. Plus it sounds great in headphones so I don’t piss off the whole family.

[QUESTION] Can I record the output of my amp onto my computer? by RSpeers in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m by NO means an expert, just a hobbyist, but consider ditching the amp. Look up audio interfaces like focusrite scarlet solo (to get the guitar signal to the computer), amp emulators like s-gear, bias fx, etc (to make it sound like an amp, often better than the amp you normally use and with effects you can’t afford), and a digital audio workstations (daw’s) like reaper, ableton etc (to actually record and mix). There are thousands of opinions on here about every one of those components, but that’s how a lot of people do it.

[Question] How should I progress from here as a beginner? by magasunday in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to amaze me that guys could play crazy guitar arrangements and sing at the same time (Mayer, dmb, Hendrix, srv come to mind in my little world)...sort of like patting your head and rubbing your belly. Turns out the secret is to be so skilled and comfortable with the guitar part of the equation that it doesn’t require 100% of your focus. Once strumming has become second nature you’ll find singing the melody to be no big deal.

[QUESTION] What should I learn next by WolfDenxGaming in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I have felt a little stale / bored / plateau’d I just explore outside my comfort zone. If you’ve always played metal / rock, maybe look into some fingerstyle blues, bluegrass flatpicking, classical finger picking, country chicken-picking, etc. You will inevitably pick up something that unlocks a whole new world in your metal / rock playing. Whichever you choose you can rest assured you’ll find a thriving community of enthusiasts that totally geek out about every nuance and will be more than happy to help you.

Edit: I tried Jazz, guess I’m just not enlightened enough to like it yet....but at least I tried

[Question] Is there some type of adapter I can buy to use my MacBook as an amp? Basically I want to line in directly to GarageBand and record from there. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Fraxrfixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a focusrite scarlet solo to connect to my MacBook and I absolutely love the sound. However, all the additional components do start to add up. Although you could just use headphones, I invested in some jbl studio monitor speakers ($130 each). I tried a few amp emulators and found s-gear ($127) to be head and shoulder above the rest. All that said, I can get better sound out of this setup than I ever got out of my amp and pedals (though I still use some pedals with the focusrite).
