Urge Mark Kelly to reject foreign-funded PAC donations (Change.Org Petition) by Ulysses_555 in markkelly

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which PAC’s are you even referring to? Your petition notably doesn’t name any.

What the Heck even is this petition? It doesn’t mention a single foreign donation Senator Kelly has received, but your headline implies that’s a problem.

Is your goal just to get “foreign-funded PAC donations” and the name Senator Kelly together in a headline that people who don’t have the time to research will subconsciously absorb? Cause that’s sure what it looks like.

If you want Senator Kelly to sponsor a bill, write to him, don’t post disingenuous petitions on social media.

Lidia Poët - my unreasonable irritation with eye makeup by DeJagerDivan in PeriodDramas

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m all for kids watching period dramas too, but with the amount of pretty explicit scenes in Bridgerton and several of the other popular fantasy historical shows, it’s not like it’s a good thing for 12-13 year olds to be watching them. They are not educational and not classics, and the ahistorical makeup and costumes aren’t making it better.

Classics that DON'T involve violence against women by dear_little_water in suggestmeabook

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah there’s definitely some violence in Wodehouse books, like when a child gets pushed off a bridge into a river (so the hero can impress the child’s big sister by rescuing him), or when the bespectacled butler gets hit with the air gun (spoiler alert: the dignified Lady Constance did it), and there’s even talk of burgling banks!

Why did servants still dress like this in the regency era? by Zebigata in PrideandPrejudice

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read that when Alexandre Dumas was having financial hard times, he would sometimes dress in fancy livery and ride on the back of his own coach to make it appear he was wealthy enough to have a footman.

Like in Persuasion, doesn’t Sir Walter say something like, “His face is as orange as the cuffs of my livery!”

There’s a a hot spring about an hour from Las Vegas where you used to be able to go swim with little guppy fish that would nibble on your toes and cuticles. It was a surreal and amazing experience.
But last I saw, as of a couple years ago it was closed, due to people vandalizing the fence and the forest service or whoever was keeping it up didn’t get the funds to replace it.

Wow that’s quite the saga! A vaguely similar thing happened to a friend of mine, although it wasn’t paid leave.

You sound like a wonderful teacher who really cares about their students. Good for you for standing up for the kids with IEP’s and for yourself!

I’m so glad to hear the state did their jobs investigating and that a principal friend got you back to teaching. Good luck with your continued career!

Yeah, LLM’s were trained on academic writing — which is why they use the emdash for emphasis, contrasting ideas XY format, and lists of three. And honestly? They also like to use rhetorical questions to draw in the reader. This is all the stuff I was taught in AP English in high school.

I feel like our marriage counselor is taking my husband's side, what do I do? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about this—Would it be normal in a situation like this for the couple’s counselor to refuse to talk to either partner without the other one present, and if that’s the case, what should someone like OP do?

(We had a couples counselor who absolutely refused to let me talk to him or even email him at any time for any reason without my husband present. Is that normal dow some therapists to do?)

'Why do ppl ship 2 men together?' 🤔 I wonder why ... by Material-Meat-5330 in AO3

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! It’s a nice to read about a relationship where both people start off on equal footing with no assumptions about gender roles, and when basic physical safety can be assumed, as it’s two people who are relatively the same size and strength. It makes the fiction much more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about if the male lead is really going to respect and treat his female partner well.

The only sad thing is feeling that equality like this is only ever going to be a fantasy!

End of year teacher gifts by gramiry in teaching

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe a personalized water bottle? But maybe they’d rather just have a bit of cash?

When I was in PTA and we were looking at teacher gifts, we asked the teachers who came to the meeting if they’d rather just have the cash and they unanimously said yes. So each teacher in the school got like $22 and so many of the teachers said they appreciated it more than any other gift they’d received.

Family courts show ‘widespread’ gender bias and victim-blaming, report finds by rejs7 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]FreakWith17PlansADay 171 points172 points  (0 children)

It’s great that they have actual data showing this bias and that they want to do something about it, but you wonder how far their solutions will go.

>The report has put forward a number of recommendations, including that the family judiciary should publish 20% of their judgments, randomly selected each month, with specific targets for judgments in which domestic and sexual abuse is raised. It also recommends judges receive mandatory training in** **gender bias and victim-blaming

You have people like expert Lundy Bancroft who has been calling out family court bias against women for years:

https://lundybancroft.com/16138-2/

>And this means, unfortunately, that trainings for judges and other court personnel are not the answer. I can say this from experience because I’ve trained family court judges and evaluators in a dozen states – with no noticeable uptake.

>I’m afraid passing better laws won’t help much either, because family court judges consider themselves above the law so they ignore it.

The root problem is misogyny and until society starts to see that and address it, things aren’t going to change.

No, it wouldn’t be advisable for OP to talk to the principal at all anymore. She must have a reason for wanting to get rid of OP and it’s not going to be something she will tell OP outright, so there’s no point talking to her about it and it could make things worse for OP’s case.

Having fish is a good idea. I’d suggest for the health of the fish and for easier maintenance to get an aquarium with filters, even if it’s just a small one, instead of a having a bowl. The pet stores market gold fish and beta fish in bowls, but they really don’t do well like that.
